Doris Day - Just Blew In From The Windy City Lyrics

The windy city is mighty pretty
But they ain't got what we got, no sirree
They've got shacks up to seven stories
Never see any Morning Glory's
But a step from our doorway
We got 'em for free

They've got those minstrel shows
Pretty ladies in the big chateau's
Private lawns, public parks
For the sake of civic virtue
They've got fountains there that squirt you

I just blew in from the windy city
The windy city is mighty pretty
But they ain't got what we got
I'm tellin' ya, boys
We got more life in Deadwood City
Than in all of Illinois

You should-a seen me a-windo' shoppin'
A-windo' shoppin' with eyes a-poppin'
At the sights that you see there, yes sirree
Press a bell and a moment later
Up you go in an elevator
Just as fast as a polecat a-climbin' a tree

I heard claim hundreds came
To a thing they call a baseball game
Cigar stores, revolving doors
They got new inventions coming
'Stead of outdoor, indoor plumbing

I just blew in from the windy city
The windy city is mighty pretty
But they ain't got what we got
I'm tellin' ya, boys
I ain't a-swappin' half of Deadwood
For the whole of Illinois

Alix, I had the same, wanting to be Calamilty Jane when I was young. I think she was a feminist role model for me. one of the few that were available on television...

I just blew in from the windy city
The windy city is mighty purty
But they ain't got what we got, no sirree
They got shacks up to seven storeys
    Never see any morning glories
But a step from our doorway
    We got 'em fer free

    They've got those minstrel shows
Purty ladies in the big chapeaus
    Private lawns, public parks
For the sake of civic virtue
They've got fountains there that squirt you

I just blew in from the windy city
The windy city is mighty purty
But they ain't got what we got.
    I'm telling you, boys,
We got more life in Deadwood city than in all of Illinois!

On the street was a dancin' feller
All dressed up in a suit of yeller
Aand the dance that he did there
    Went somethin' like this...

    Whistle! (whistling) More!

    (Dance Interlude)

You shoulda seen me a-winder shopping
    A-winder shopping with eyes a-poppin'
At the sights that you see there, yes sirree!

Press a bell and a moment later
Up you go in an elevator
Just as fast as a polecat a-climbin' a tree

    I heard claim hundreds came
To a thing they call a baseball game!
    Cigar stores, revolving doors
Men wear sideburns and they oughter
'Cause a haircut costs a quarter

I just blew in from the windy city,
The windy city is mighty purty
But they ain't got what we got.
    I'm tellin' ya, boys
I ain't a-swappin' half of Deadwood for the whole of Illinois!

At a time when celebrities had to have at least an iota of talent, today the completely untalented can get a run eg Kim Kardashian

  9. A.... O....

I saw this as a teen ager and I wanted to be her...in the movies and sing my heart out!! She did this so well, Anything she did was perfect. But, this movie stands out to me because it made such an impression on me

    Center stage

  11. X.... C....

This reminds me so much of Annie Get Your Gun in many ways. Considering it was such a bit hit which was released just 3 years ago, maybe it was not a coincidence. But I have to admit that Doris hold her own in this sequence.

  12. R.... P....

Tho one and only Doris RIP

  13. B.... D....

An now Chiraq is the murder capital of the country.

  16. B.... ....

    OH THE MEMORY'S

  17. R.... P....

How marvellous that Doris puts so much energy and charm into her film roles. This routine was flawless despite its undoubted difficulties. So athletic and seamless. Nobody comes near her commitment. Maybe gone but certainly not forgotten. RIP dear Doris.

  18. A.... G....

She is incomparable as Calamity and i can't think of anyone who could get anywhere near her level. As a direct contrast she was magnificent in "Love Me or Leave Me" opposite the great James Cagney.

  19. E.... V....

So much moderne way! Thanks so much

  20. E.... V....

    She's the greatest!

Someone must have been scorned in chi-town to write this. Chicago has always been full of life since way back before the civil war through Capone and after the political mayhem that still blows hard. Now were known for our sports teams, food, historical ethnic neighborhoods, crazy weather, music, cool ass hard working people. Anywhere in this beloved USA you will find us,someone from Chicago. People never leave Chicago...they take it with them everywhere...always!!!💪

Her movies were a safe and a wholesome fun for all the family to watch and spend quality time together ..
I call her The Elegant Mother as she was a mother in most of her movies .. kind, loving and yes Elegant.
She retired in Carmel, CA where she bought a cute hotel only to allow pets in as other hotels in town were not allowing pets.
She represented the best in our American culture.
