Doris Day - I'm Beginning To See The Light Lyrics

I never cared much for moonlit skies
I never wink back at fireflies
But now that the stars are in your eyes
I'm beginning to see the light

I never went in for afterglow
Or candlelight on the mistletoe
But now when you turn the lamp down low
I'm beginning to see the light

Used to ramble through the park
Shadowboxing in the dark
Then you came and caused a spark
That's a four-alarm fire now

I never made love by lantern-shine
I never saw rainbows in my wine
But now that your lips are burning mine
I'm beginning to see the light

Thank you, dear Doris. I've been your fan all my life. I'm 77 and still listen to your songs and watch your movies. Thank you for everything. God bless you!

I mentioned something to my roommate recently and made a reference to Doris Day. He didn't know who she was! Knew the name but that was all! He is only one year younger than me (48). I was horrified. Do you think because she disappeared from the "the light" people just stopped mentioning her? I don't understand it. She is not only an icon, she is like a genre all to herself.

Awww lovely, beautiful, talented DORIS....Happy 92nd birthday we love ya x

  11. c.... ....

we forget what a good singer she was. I say was, because singers loose their good voice usually when they get old, and she is over 90

Beginning to See the Light, this is one of our favorite versions of this classic swing tune. We’ve posted a ukulele tutorial for this gem in the key of D; it’s on our SeattleUkeLessons channel.

  13. D.... ....

Yes ... it is . Her Latin for Lovers album is great ! She's really one of the best. So happy you enjoyed !

I've just stumbled across this video of Doris Day which I would like to thank you for posting, as I have always been a great fan of this talented lady and believe that although she was a great star, at the same time she was sadly underrated because everything she did was so natural, that maybe she was taken for granted. You mention her "Latin for Lovers" album which I have at home and which is a great favourite of mine. I particularly love her versions of "How Insensitive" and "Our Day Will Come" - she just breathes such emotion and honesty in those song, it actually brings tears to my eyes. I think the orchestrations are beautiful and proves how talented Doris way, in making that foray into Latin music which I believe only a few other artists had attempted at that time in the 1960s.

listen to her Version of Meditation just the Best..:)

  15. D.... ....

Hi ...I'm not famliliar with that movie so I''m not sure if its Doris - I'll have to check that out. I love her version of the song....so happy you enjoyed it too !!

  16. E.... D....

This is the version I am searching for. I heard this song in the movie, Mona Lisa Smile and I just have to hear it again; it was simply beautiful. I tried to play the other female artists' versions but Doris Day is the best. She must have been the song artist that sang this tune in that movie.

    E.... D....

Kelly Rowland sang the song in the movie Mona Lisa Smile.... but I agree Doris Day's version is the best!

  17. D.... ....

@ForEverGilda This is one of my all time favorites from Doris ! Love it !! It is amazing the number of people that love Doris. She still receives a huge amount of mail. Before her son passed away, he said she received as much as she did while she was still in Hollywood. That is amazing ! I'm so happy you're enjoying some of my video's. I joined yt to get her music out there so it makes me feel good to hear you are enjoying ! Thank you .. have a great week !!

I'm Beginning to See the Light from the album SENTIMENTAL JOURNEY recorded around 1964-1965 is a great song, sung with perfect diction and in the intimate style which is Doris's signature. Not to forget on the same album AT LAST, THE MORE I SEE YOU (Wow!!), SERENADE IN BLUE....With Doris it's always a sentimental journey. I'm very happy to see that a lot of people like Doris Day and her songs, even me in Switzerland so far away from the United States....Thanks again, Dayniac, we love you.

  19. D.... ....

@BloxorzWizard I have to agree with you ... in my view - she is at the top. I know not every one agrees with that. I think she deserves much more credit than she gets. I've never figured out why she is overlooked. Her son Terry said that her movie career took over and got bigger than her music career. And I think Marty had a hand in it too ... he channeled her career in a direction she probably wouldn't have gone with another agent. Yes - she sings some great songs in Young Man With A Horn.

  20. B.... ....

She's not just up there with them... she went beyond them. This is way better than their versions. If you've never seen that movie with her and Kirk Douglas, where Kirk is a trumpet player that winds up marrying a vicious Lauren Bacall and spirals downwards, and Doris is a singer who bucks him up, I highly recommend it. She sings some great stuff in it all throughout the movie.

    B.... ....

I read that movie was very difficult for her to do, as the cast was not real friendly. She said" Kirk was good friends with Lauren Bacall, she was left out and added, that Kirk has always been into Kirk"

@waynebrasler It certainly illustrates that she belongs right there at the top. In recent years she's gotten more of the credit she deserves....thank goodness !! Happy you enjoyed !!

  23. W.... B....

This recording illustrates why so many music critics put Doris right up there with Ella, Peggy and other greats.

    Don't forget Frank Sinatra

@angelofbebop I love this song from Doris... but there are soooo many that I love ! haha ! Thank angel.... happy you enjoyed. Hope you're having a great week !!

  27. D.... ....

Yes - he sure did. I have it on something - can't remember what ! I'll have to find it.

  28. B.... G....

    @rioamigo
did he really? thats interesting...i love her films..

  29. D.... ....

And I have to respect him for changing his opinion and stating it !!

  30. D.... ....

You are so right - again ! I really don't understand the perception that many people have of Doris. She was a working woman in films long before it was the norm. And got her man her way. I know many critics that poo pooed her in the 60's and 70's have changed their tune. Roger Ebert being one of them. I've seen him say just that. It's refreshing to me that she is getting the credit she deserves now....just waiting for the academy to honor her ! Won't happen but - I'm waiting !! lol

  31. D.... ....

@rioamigo I know just what you mean. I think she sings the song...as the composers meant it ... period. No fancy stuff - just the true essence of the song. In a way I think thats why she's so underrated - and to me that should bring her more accolades !
Don't get me wrong - I enjoy jazz and Peggy and Ella are wonderful. But sometimes - I want to hear the just the song. And Doris always delivers.

    D.... ....

Her great gift is that she always remains true to the essence of a song and doesn't employ and rely upon any vocal gymnasts and unnecessary embellishments, like some singers do, in delivering a song. She just sings with all the naturalness, honesty and purity that the song deserves.

  32. D.... ....

I don't know ... but I really love this one from Doris ! Happy you enjoyed !

  33. D.... ....

Have to agree with you. I think her interpretation of this is amazing. Has to be one of the best ... or maybe as you say - the best ! Thanks ... happy you enjoyed !

  34. D.... ....

Isn't it a great version of the song ? I really love this one too ! Happy you did too !

  35. S.... B....

What a sexy rendition of this much overlooked song. Doris is simply flawless. Loved It! Thanks heaps.

  48. D.... ....

Thanks Rod - glad you enjoyed it !

  49. D.... ....

coco -- thats very true !
There were Day movies that she fit into that mold. But - there were other movies that she was going in a whole different direction.Thats the reason Day's independent woman was different. For instance in By The Light of the Silvery Moon - her fiance comes home from WWI and wants to wait to get married until he can save money - she wants to get a job to help. Miss Independent ! But the man says NO NO NO - can't do that.
She was a working woman in many of her movies

    Dayniac4324 -
thanks a million for your comment about working (single) women. According to WOII history they were strongly encouraged to contribute to the "war effort" mainly in factories, while the men were sent overseas to fight.
After the men came home, the women were strongly encouraged not to take their jobs, i.e. to quit, which was strongly advertised by advertisements on radio and tv. Pretty apron and pretty smile and so forth.
Please correct me if I´m wrong.
    Yours truly
    Coco

The thing about Doris that people forget is she was a single working woman in the movies before anyone else ! She really led the way for all the women libbers that attacked her image in the late 60's. I think they missed the point ! Oh - don't get me started !
Glad you liked the song !!
    Thanks youtubemum for sharing !

    D.... ....

You are so right! Doris Day was a fantastic singer, dancer and actress, but above all she was a strong, resolute and independent lady. I think a lot of feminists during the 1960s, like you say, missed that point with her and actually didn't realise that she was (albeit perhaps unconsciously) making a stand for women's rights more than they thought. Her so-called perceived virginity and "good two-shoes image" was unfairly derided but really it takes a strong woman to stick to her moral principles, which she displayed in her films, and to not give in to what her male co-stars expected by going to bed with them. Her ability to stick to her principles and say "no" was a strength, not a weakness and the qualities of honesty, truthfulness and goodness which are associated with Doris should really be applauded by those feminists, not attacked. I know I'm getting on my soapbox, but it seems that in society we are often keen to wrongly uphold a rather loose, sexy siren as the embodiment of female strength, rather than a good, wholesome heroine like Doris Day! Her refusal to play Mrs Robinson in the "Graduate" with Dustin Hoffman, because of the sexual content, again showed how strong she was in remaining true to her principles, but again I believe she was derided for this decision by the women libbers. She really paved the way for women's rights more than people realised.

I used to think that Doris Day was completely drilled into the 50´s image of what a woman should be like.
