Donovan - Lay Of The Last Tinker Lyrics

I can see by your eyes you're a good man,
and the sparkle of the ring on your hand.
You have a muzzled dancing monkey,
a little cup in a hairy hand.

(I'll) bring cheese with me.
Won't you bring bread and have some wine?
Break cheese with me.
Won't you break bread and have some wine?

A goat skinned tamborine
what sites that has seen
Blazing eyes of dances
daughters of tinker queens.

(I'll) bring cheese with me.
Won't you bring bread and have some wine?
Break cheese with me.
Won't you break bread and have some wine?

Ya hang your cloak in a gypsy fashin.
I see a scar of an ancient lashing.
Born a babe in Macedonia
to the shounds of seas a-crashing.

Break cheese with me.
Won't you break bread and have some wine?
Break cheese with me.
Won't you break bread and have some wine?

I can see by your eyes you're a good man,
and the sparkle of the ring on your hand.
You have a muzzled dancing monkey,
a little cup in a hairy hand.

I can see by your eyes you're a good man,
and the sparkle of the ring on your hand.
You have a muzzled dancing monkey,
a little cup in a hairy hand.

extremely great album in general, although a trifle dark in places. This particular song is light and breezy, like the beginning of a new relationship.

? This is a Celtic Revival song stylistically and geographically and Yogic Hindu song in its essential content. It has nothing to do with Ja. Donovan is a religious seeker and musical internationalist but he always knows exactly what he is doing in each song. He never wants to insult any religion he explores. So JA is JA. But the Hurdy-gurdy man is Shiva.

    well stated.

Back then the idea of a "muzzled dancing monkey" or Alan Price's "Simon Smith and his Amazing Dancing Bear"seemed cool. As long as the tinker and monkey have bonded and the animal is well treated it's cool with me, but doubtless against the law now. Lovely song.

the Mountain from the Mountain Song is from the Blue Mountains of JA , he has said

he incorporated some of these lyrics (& the tune, without the jamaican thing) for "trudi" on the "barabajagal" album.
