Donovan - Ferris Wheel Lyrics

Walking in the seashore twilight,
It's then you spy carnival lights,
You slowly near the magic sight,
Tangerine sky minus one kite.
Take time an' tie your pretty hair
The gypsy driver doesn't care
If you catch your hair in the ferris wheel on top,
In the ferris wheel on top.
A silver bicycle you shall ride,
To bathe your mind in the quiet tide.
Far off as it seems your hair will mend
With a Samson's strength to begin again.
Take time an' dry your pretty eyes,
Watch the seagull fly far-off skies
To build its nest in the ferris wheel on top,
In the ferris wheel on top.
If ever I reach her.
And the moral here, if any, my friend:
Follow through your dream to the end.
Dig the seagull fly across the sky
To build its nest in the ferris wheel,
In the ferris wheel.

Donovan Ferris Wheel Comments

This is my first time hearing this magical song, I just recently discover this wonderful poetic music artist. I always like Donovan’s clever ways of singing out the words. For instance, in Lalenya and Hurdy Gurdy Man, he purposely used vibrato to create the mood. As for this song, he dragged the words so long that it feels like you are spending time on a Ferris wheel, so slow and sluggish.

This is my favorite song, I got this record at a thrift shop for a dollar and listen to it front to back at least once a month. I dont like the comparison of donovan to dylan, donovan is donovan

    W.... D....

dylan was a pr quack, donovan IS a minstrel.....still recording, if you look for him

  3. D.... D....

This song was out when I smoked my first J it was a very popular song with the cool kids man those were great days wish I could go back again

  7. W.... D....

something about this song is so beautiful, it doesnt make sense written out but when its sung it captures an emotion i cant describe

  8. A.... ....

lol @ "how caring this song is" it's about having sex with a stranger on a ferris wheel and getting your hair caught and no one cares. silly but beautiful.

  9. W.... D....

every time i listen to this song i hear it a different way. i always loved the idea of being on top of a ferris wheel because it only lasts for a moment

  10. K.... P....

Wow I found the Gabor Szabo cover of this first and worshipped it for weeks, then went back to my old Donovan records and found myself captivated

  11. T.... H....

One of the hidden little gems on that great album. The sitar and Romantic lyrics so redolent of the age.

  12. S.... M....

    Saubaaaaaa XERVAASS

Is it bad that I just discovered Donovan? I had no idea his music even existed, better late than ever I guess!

    P.... ....

Without Goodfellas, I would have never known about Donovan

    P.... ....

Wow that's great his music is timeless.

    P.... ....

Welcome to the greatest artist of all time, I hope you enjoy the trip!!!

    P.... ....

    Check out Syd Barrett

    P.... ....

his song "hurdy gurdy man" was the first appearance of led zeppelin, with donovan subbing for plant....jimmy page, john dunham, and j p jones, with donovan doing the vocals......

  14. A.... ....

when I was a little girl I always went on the FERRIS WHEEL first at the fair always lock forward to the fair coming every year

  15. M.... A....

  16. N.... M....

  17. S.... G....

Who fuck dislikes this ? Soulless .

  18. J.... R....

This piece is lovely.  I hadn't noticed it earlier on in my years of Donovan appreciation.

  19. R.... Z....

    sitar played by Shawn Phillips

    R.... Z....

    holy shit, love second contribution

  20. P.... O....

What an album, what an album.

  21. A.... P....

    Tangerine sky minus one kite.
The gypsy driver doesn't care if you catch your hair in the ferris wheel.

    A.... P....

    exactly

    A.... P....

Gypsy is an offensively misused word

  22. N.... ....

An album where the sitar keeps showing up everywhere. Cool.

  23. J.... N....

    What a nice bass line.

  24. N.... ....

So glad I found this. I had the original album back in the 60s, but our rinky dink stereos couldn't fully demonstrate what great skull candy this is. Incredible production on this. To show how long-lasting this is: Sunshine Superman was sampled in the 90s for the song "RIde on into the next town."

    N.... ....

+NameRequiredSoHere You're right about the fact that we missed out so much on what these songs had to offer when listened to on the crappy equipment we had back then. It's like a whole new song almost when we hear these gems today on good digital equipment with good headphones.

    N.... ....

The moral if any my friend...FOLLOW THROUGH your dream to the end! PERFECT ALBUM which I had played 100 times back then in my lonely teenager room..Kept me sane!

    N.... ....

Even on my cheap stereo, HE FED MY SOUL.

    N.... ....

I don't know y'all. The best sound quality I've ever heard comes out of my grandfather in law's 1960s turntable and speakers. Headphones reveal generally "hidden" parts of the music but those speakers capture it just as well whilst sounding much more rich and full.

  25. N.... ....

This song is soo fucking genius. PEOPLE WAKE UP.

    N.... ....

    +Novalogicss haha so true

  26. R.... M....

    If ever I return.

  27. a.... ....

your goddamn junk on the screen ruins an otherwise good video

    a.... ....

What video? That is the album cover you asshole

  28. 1.... ....

I don't know but Shawn Phillips probably did most of the sitar on the album.

  29. W.... ....

I've just come from Waterfall to this. Isn't that just something... Both tunes to me are important. Take time and dry your pretty eyes...She carries on throughout it all. Peace, Love & Unity.

  30. R.... F....

Play, feel it... then replay it again
    replay
    replay moar <3
    So beautifull lyrics here.

  31. B.... B....

John Paul Jones on bass guitar

  32. B.... B....

    John Pauo Jones perhaps

  33. B.... B....

so amazing a love song of caring and kindness..

  34. B.... B....

Je suis d'accord. one of the best albums i was lucky enough to have. it's like my life in review..

  35. P.... P....

Well, due to contractual troubles in England, the album was indeed only released in 67, but the actual recordings happened in 65. Donovan himself was actually discovered by Dylan. Legend goes that he did some kind of audition for him in an 'Akward Hotel Room Session' (whatever that means). Donovan, one of the most underrated artists indeed. Peace, brother.

    P.... P....

Not true. They did meet once in a hotel room, because Dylan had heard about him but musicians are not discovered in hotel rooms.

  36. P.... P....

When I heared that the album "Sunshine Superman" was recorded in 1965, my respect for Donovan increased even further. He truly was a pioneer in psychedelic music.

    P.... P....

His book is excellent...10 yrs old by now...
He did the whole Career from Catch the Wind to Hurdy Gurdy Man in 5 yrs...!!

  37. J.... G....
