Donald Fagen - Tomorrow's Girls Lyrics
Our town is just like any other
Good citizens at work and play
Normal folks doin' business in the normal way
This morning was like any other
Mommies kissing daddies goodbye
And pointed up at the sky
From Sheilus to the reefs of Kizmar
From Stargate and the outer worlds
They're speeding towards our sun
On a party run
Here come tomorrow's girls
Tomorrow's girls
You see them on the grass at lunch hour
In their summer dresses
A little smile can really make your day
Their kisses feel like real kisses
And when they cry, they cry real tears
But what's left in your arms
When the static clears
They're landing on the Jersey beaches
Their engines make the white sand swirl
The heat is so intense
Earth men have no defense
Against tomorrow's girls
Tomorrow's girls
In the cool of the evening
In the last light of the triple sun
I wait by the go-tree
When the day's busywork is done
Soon the warm night breezes
Start to rolling in off the sea
Yes, at lantern time
That's when you come to me
Come to me
Our home is just like any other
We're grillin' burgers on the back lawn
Some time goes by
We fall asleep with the TV on
I dream about a laughing angel
Then the laugh becomes a furious whine
Look out, fellas
It's shredding time
They're mixing with the population
A virus wearing pumps and pearls
Lord help the lonely guys
Hooked by those hungry eyes
Here come tomorrow's girls
From Sheilus to the reefs of Kizmar
From Stargate and the outer worlds
They're speeding towards our sun
On a party run
Here come tomorrow's girls
Tomorrow's girls
Tomorrow's girls
You're not my Ruthie
You're not my Debbie
You're not my Sherry
You're one of tomorrow's girls
You're not my Nancy
You're not my Barbie
You're not my Betty

THIS IS THE BEST SONG...FOR ALL OF TOMORROW'S GIRLS!
Echoing previous sentiments. Genius. Sweet composition.
Arguably my fave Donald Fagan song,
Donald Fagen F A N T A S T I C O!!!!!❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Underrated album that led to the reunion of Steely Dan
PRAISE TO THE NAME: “STEELY DAN”
I love ❤️ all of the newest songs I really really dig them just like I really dig you dearest Donald Fagen. Mucho caliente just like me always AHMEN
Fuck verizon.
According to Donald Fagan, this song was inspired by a lament he has about some of the romantic relationships he's had in that, sometimes, the person you get involved with changes dramatically over time -- to say that the person you thought you once knew "changes into something else" [paraphrase]. So, an alien creature is a metaphor for the person you thought you knew. Another thing about this song is that it has a some examples of Fagan's practice of using invented words and phrases for the sole purpose of maintaining rhythm and continuity in his lyrics. One example is the line,"In the cool of the evening in the last light of the triple sun..." Sounds like "triple sun" is some kind of atmospheric phenomena (it would have to be atmospheric because, of course, we have only one sun, but there is no atmospheric phenomena known by this name. Fagan invented this phrase because it fit the flow of the music. Another line is, "I wait by the 'go tree' when the day's busy work is done." There is no existing literal reference to anything called a "go tree," -- another lyrical invention just in order to fill gaps. The thing is that Fagan does this so well, and it's amazing that he creates such captivating music from such simple sentiments.
Nothing like hearing a Donald Fagen track for the first time. Your brain is excited for each phrase
@John Graves
I'm sorry. I thought you were ranking their songs. For the record, I believe Steely Dan has no equal for these reasons.
1. They could do it all: rock, jazz, blues, funk, reggae, R&B, soul, metal, Latin, pop and even classical, if you throw in the string arrangement from "FM."
2. Everyone wanted to record with them. Over 100 different musicians and singers recorded with Steely Dan.
3. They sold over 40 million albums.
4. They have been described, not just as a band, but as an "aesthetic."
@Edward Sholar Great points, all of them. They are the fine art of the music world.
@John Graves
Merry Christmas!
@Edward Sholar Merry Christmas!
Love this song.it would put anyone in a groove even if your feeling blue.
Steely Dan was so intense, men had no defence.
Absolutely
Fozzie 💋💋💋
Thanks for the kisses, Sugar. I just wish that my dead ex-wife had the same appreciation for such a great band. Tomorrow's Girls was such a revelation and a revolution, let me know your thoughts.
I love Steely Dan, my favorite band. Saw them twice in concert and they were a *thrill*
I'm with tomorrow girls
Same as Chase The Dragon.
Listening to these tracks, and they're interspersed with ads, obvs. The one I've just seen is for Compare the Market (an insurance aggregator) and the meerkat characters are driving...an automated 'future-car'. Weird, huh.
A virus wearing pumps and pearls!😎😍
Te adoro! Como você me faz bem, me ajuda nos meus momentos difíceis, não canso de pedir a Deus para te dar muita saúde, séria bom se você pudesse viver mais 71 anos. Deus te abençoe, muita saúde te desejo!
XOXO NYC J
The problem with this song is that it finishes too soon...
Earth men have no defense....how did fagen predict thots?

I HEAR SOME EAGLES VOICE IN THE SESSION MUSIC.
ALONG WITH A TOUCH OF MCDONALD VIBE!.
RIP WALTER!!
Saw Donald at the Saratoga Winery in Saratoga Ca, tuesday night. Great performance, wonderful setting and it only cost $275, ha! and it was worth every penny. I don't know where they get the energy, cus they went full bore for 2 hours
Steely Dan were the Beatles for intellectuals
Oh, that was so deep, Travis. You ever see the Deerhunter, when Diniro throws his middle finger up, and says "This is this"?
Yes, I've seen the DEER HUNTER many times and it seems you can't take criticism. That's your problem.
Maybe YOUR problem is that all you do is criticize, Travis. So fuck off!
And YOUR problem is that you criticize too much.
My former wife was pregnant for the second time, and we had no idea if it was a boy or a girl. The day before the expected delivery I heard this great song on the radio, convincing me it was a girl. My ex wife “knew” it was a boy. The day after “Tomorrow’s girls” my second daughter was born...
Congrats!
I saw Steely Dan in concert at Cynthia Mitchel Woods Pavillion in Texas for their first tour outside of the studio. I have been a fan since the 70's and continue to find them to be the best contemporary music bad that has (ever) hit the music seen. There is no other band that compares to that style and sound of Donald Fagan.
I hear you . Now that's the truth! A phenomenal artist.
Genius!
snowbound is an awesome song as well
Whats funny about this album cover is that it looks like a cell phone right of the steering wheel playing this song. Lol
Wow!...could Fagen be a time traveler?
Their engines make the white sands swirl..
What a line..
Amooooooo e amarei sempre!
Love. The early 90's were so great for music, lots of smooth jazz and Donald Fagen.
Now THAT'S a bridge!
Nearly lost my mind the first 30 times I heard it.
Everytime I play this I imagine a 1974 Soul Train line.
Walter lays down some of the tastiest guitar licks ever on this bad ass gem...seeing them play this live was mind blowing...Fembots came out dancing around the stage...
Donald the best genius
19 people don't believe in extra-terrestrials.
You're not Miami...
Classic . Musical wisdom. Where did the music go ?????
thank you Beachwalker. Pervis
They are here really carefull dey got rays gunsys, and dey might be libbys tards
Go fuck yourself
Make no mistake Donald is indeed one of 3 that I can listen to 24-7 . The other 2 are a secret and remain my greedy ears property.
Billy Gibbons is my #2. His latest Hombre Sin Nombre (Perfectamundo album) wriiten for his trip to Cuba. How Billy and Donald (70s to this day) have evolved blows me away
TEMAZO.
great lyrics, freakin awesome song
Irony, thy name is fagen.
Great job!
my jam in may '93.
Love when it breaks down in that middle section, so beautiful.
Walter did the guitar on that part.
Maynard Becker Couldn't be anybody else! I think this is my fave thing of his.
...yeah..it is. Can you feel the summer there?...the fading light, near the RR tracks. A pang of hunger waiting for her to show.
this cut never gets old, love the groove and Donald fagen brings the goods, summer jam here, the bass, organ, drums, organ, vocals all slamming
Who are the nine lost souls who disliked this?
Carson Myers They’re Yesterday’s Girls 😉
Carson Myers I too, felt the same 🤷♂️
29 one year later
Some souls have to experience more than they have done, so far, to appreciate this beautiful music.
A couple years ago, my Dad was hospitalized, so to help my Mom out, I drove her to and from the hospital on a daily basis to visit him. I had my phone connected to the Bluetooth audio system in her car one day while we were making the trip to visit him, and this song came up on my playlist. About halfway through the song, she said to me, "I've never heard this song before, but this sounds like Steely Dan". I told her, "Yes, it does. That's because it's by Donald Fagen, the vocalist for Steely Dan". I thought to myself "good call, Mom". She's 74 years young.
Don't sell your mom short; she was 35 when Aja was released in 1977.
@Togo Burrows LOVE that story!!!!
Michael S Pastorius good stuff
She might be a fans of that band.not a bad choice.
A great music-loving Mother you have......A greeting from Trento, Italy
I knew it! When this song first came out back in the '90s, I thought it was the product of a Steely Dan reunion because I can hear and feel Walter Becker's influence all over it. Sure enough, hit the "Show More" button and you'll see this in the credits: "Bass Guitar, Producer, Solo Guitar: Walter Becker".
Word has it that at the time that this album was released that Reprise Records had actually wanted to release this album as a Steely Dan album but they were legally prevented from doing it at the time because MCA Records, who had bought out Steely Dan's original record label (ABC Records) back in the late '70's assumed ownership of the Steely Dan trademark name as part of the deal. This angered Walter Becker and Donald Fagen so much because they felt that the name should revert to them since ABC Networks was forced to divest their record label holdings to MCA in order to comply with the Sherman Anti-Trust law that they only ended up recording and releasing two albums and a soundtrack song for MCA before splitting and Donald doing solo work for many years in the 1980's. When Donald and Walter got back together to work on this album in 1992, they both decided to credit Walter Becker's name as the album's producer as a way of giving true fans a heads up on who was really behind it. When MCA's parent Universal got bought out by Segrams in 1997 resulting in them retiring the MCA Records brand, they decided to give the Steely Dan trademark name back to Becker and Fagen.
Thank you so much for your informative post! This has seriously bugged me for years and continues to do so and would have continued to bug me till my dying day! My kids will even tell you how Daddy (I'm Lily's husband) always says: "why wasn't this called a Steely Dan album?!?" every time this song plays in Mommy's Favorites. Please tell me Robbie, just how did you become so knowledgable?
How I became knowledgeable is rather a long story, but in regards to music, it has to do with the fact that my late father had a 50 plus year career as a professional musician and entertainer and my mom was a bartender in many of the night clubs and hotel lounges that my late father played in when I was little. My dad used to get vinyl albums given to him all the time by fans who wanted him to learn certain songs off them and perform these songs during gigs, so my dad had a huge record collection. Remember, there was no Internet, or even cell phones back then. When I turned 3 years old in 1972, I started helping my late dad haul his and his band's music equipment in and out of gigs. My dad was very conservative who believed that his sons should start knowing how the real world works at a young age. One of the other things I did with dad was take long walks on the streets of NYC, Nashville, and Los Angeles to various record labels shopping dad's demo's around trying to get dad a record contract This was one of the ways I became familiar with record companies and record labels. Dad and I also meet a lot of people who worked for record labels and became friends with them as a result, so we kind of had an inside track on the business. The other was when I was little and used to listen to my dad's record collection. As a then Kindergartner, I couldn't yet read the small letting imprint on the label as to who the artist was so one of the ways I could tell who the artist was by what the record label that the artist recorded for looked like, what color the label was, etc. Since we had no computers back then, one of the other ways that dad learned songs to play on stage was he'd buy these song books that had the lyrics in them, along with issues of Billboard Magazine which I started reading later on as my reading level improved. Then MTV premiered in August of 1981, which further changed the industry and one of their segments was MTV News which I'd watch regularly. Because stereo TV's didn't exist back then, many cable companies would simulcast MTV's stereo sound on FM radio which required using a cable splitter to hook up both TV and home stereo to the signal. The late Bob Cobum, who was then a popular DJ in the San Francisco market started hosting a radio program on Monday nights called "Rockline" which was syndicated to various radio stations around the US. Rockline's format was Bob would have an artist or band appear on the program, usually when they were promoting a new album or record release and then Bob would have fans call in on 1-800-344-Rock and fans would get to ask the artist or band questions about songs or the new album that they were promoting. One of the artists who appeared on "Rockline" back in January of 1983 was Donald Fagen, who had just released his first solo album "The Nightfly" and he talked at length on the program about his and Walter's then ongoing record label issues with MCA after MCA had acquired both their former label (ABC Records) and their record contract on the show and how it lead to their then split and his signing with Warner Bros at the time for "The Nightfly." Bob Cobum also played several then new songs from "The Nightfly" and Donald Fegan talked about how the new solo album was recorded. He said it was his first album to be recorded digitally instead of analog. Anyway, you can read more about Rockline at:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rockline
This is probably my least favorite album by the Don. Still would give it an 8.5 out of 10 with Nightfly and Sunken condos at 9.5 and Morph the cat at 9.0.
Swedish American
lol
Mine is Sunken Condos, this one is the third, The Nightfly of course being the first and Morph The Cat coming in close second.
IronMan93 couldnt agree more

@Hamilton Mays Sorry, it says 'Sheilus' on the cassette liner notes. I know it's a minor thing, but let's face it - Donald would want us to get it right.
@67marlins You are correct. I didn't check the liner notes. My bad for assuming DF was referring to someplace on Earth. However, I stand by the generally accepted correct short forms of the names Dorothy and Charlotte, even though they're not listed in the liner notes.
@Hamilton Mays I'm sure you got those names right. It helps to wear dark glasses and make Ray Charles faces when listening, btw.....
@67marlins Dammit. I gave away my good Ray-bans. Sheeeit.
IF YOUR SIGNIFICANT OTHER STARTS TAKING ON STRANGE CHARACTERISTICS, LIKE ASKING TO PAINT YOUR TOE NAILS...RUN HE HAS A VIRUS
Donald fagen is a pure music genius.
Kendra Miller ..yes...he is.
No doubt. What a songwriter! He sure knows how to tell a good story musically. No mean feat by any means.
*Donald is that you*
SUGAR XYLER !!! Any major dude will tell you
What a song:::
The amazing music video got taken down! Grrrr x
I think the video is way before it's time, but then again the music is too.
So true. So true.
Can't wait to see him & the nightflyers this summer
The Groove of Thickness....
pure genius period! a virus wearing pumps and pearls!
mixing with the population.
Earth men have NO defense.
Sums up the arrogant , city modern day female.
Those lyrics are scathing indeed !
What a line! Who would have thought...
As clever, funny, and creepy as these lyrics are, it's a shame Fagen's voice is so buried in the mix.
Joshua Holmes you just need a great graphic equalizer
Joshua Holmes I wouldn't say "creepy," I would say dark and ironic.
I just scored tickets to Steely Dan Beacon Theater this fall October...... Donald Fagen is a genius. Caught this solo gem yesterdya for the first time.... can't stop listening to it.
Someone please compile a list of Dan and Don songs containing girls' names. I just don't have the time.
Katy Lied.....(even though the song is officially "Doctor Wu")
absolutely counts.
Vectrex4Life No doubt recorded by a major dude.
Always wondered if Peg hung out Josie...
Vectrex4Life Cousin Dupree is the dude, not the chick. No mention is made of her last name; they're cousins- it could be different.
