Don McLean - Tapestry Lyrics

Every thread of creation is held in position
by still other strands of things living.
In an earthly tapestry hung from the skyline
of smouldering cities so gray and so vulgar,
as not to be satisfied with their own negativity
but needing to touch all the living as well.

Every breeze that blows kindly is one crystal breath
we exhale on the blue diamond heaven.
As gentle to touch as the hands of the healer.
As soft as farewells whispered over the coffin.
We're poisoned by venom with each breath we take,
from the brown sulphur chimney and the black highway snake.

Every dawn that breaks golden is held in suspension
like the yoke of the egg in albumen.
Where the birth and the death of unseen generations
are interdependent in vast orchestration
and painted in colors of tapestry thread.
When the dying are born and the living are dead.

Every pulse of your heartbeat is one liquid moment
that flows through the veins of your being.
Like a river of life flowing on since creation.
Approaching the sea with each new generation.
You're now just a stagnant and rancid disgrace
that is rapidly drowning the whole human race.

Every fish that swims silent, every bird that flies freely,
every doe that steps softly.
Every crisp leaf that falls, all the flowers that grow
on this colourful tapestry, somehow they know.
That if man is allowed to destroy all they need.
He will soon have to pay with his life, for his greed.

What an astonishing, jaw-dropping poet to boot! Don McLean has rocked my world and soul since 1971 - eighth grade.

  11. J.... C....

Most underrated song of the seventies, simply beautiful.

  12. P.... T....

    Greed drowns the human race.

I read this for a speech class. At the end the professor said that was wonderful and "by the way did you know that was written in my basement?" I'd think it unlikely except I ran into Don McLean myself a few years before he made it on the radio. He sang at my junior high. He was amazing! Never saw anyone before or since able to get a bunch of uptight New England children to sing their hearts out.

  14. D.... M....

This song was released in late '60's/early '70's and is still pertinent today - maybe more so

  15. R.... H....

I LOVE DON XXX I Rox

  17. R.... m....

One of the most beautiful lyrics of all time

  18. E.... K....

His pronunciation makes English so beautiful and elegant. I'm not an English speaker, but it became special to me for Don Mclean. He's the Shakespeare of music.

    E.... K....

That's an amazing description of Don McLean; "He's the Shakespeare of music."

There's a comment below that says that Paul Simon is an extremely mediocre guitar player. How wrong can you be? Paul Simon's playing is not flashy but it always perfectly serves the song. I can only imagine that fellow hasn't listened to much Simon and Garfunkel or indeed the solo albums. Give yourself a treat my friend.

    d.... d....

No doubt, I like Paul Simon....but Don McLean is great too like Paul.....

  20. R.... v....

How true it is. Love this wise and poetic soul. Thanks for the video.

@AceDidItLol Well, we have made progress.

"That if man is allowed to destroy all we need he will soon have to pay with his life for his greed." Global Warming, Super Typhoons, fish kills, earthquakes , that claims thousands of lives are results of our unabated abuse of the only planet we have. In nature, there is no right or wrong. Only consequences...

    H.... C....

The wealth that has lifted billions out of deadly poverty, cured horrible diseases and saved billions from premature deaths is also the result of our use of the planet.

    H.... C....

@Mudpuppyjunior True, but there's a huge difference between use and abuse. We've been abusing it since the dawn of the Industrial Age nearly 200 years ago.

  23. V.... C....

Powerful yet simple...and we are still woven into the Tapestry that hangs upon the wall...like threads of brittle gold, desperately clinging to the fabric...so that our story may be told.

  24. S.... ....

One of his best, perhaps his best!!

  25. G.... W....

Now that's how to tell a story in a song.

  26. A.... C....

I think sir Mclean has the best lyrics, each song is a poem!!!i miss this quality of lyrics And expression nowadays!!

    A.... C....

Antonio Cortés this so much! His lyrics pull the deepest emotions out as that guitar playing compliments it, and his guitar playing is so neat to me as a guitarist myself, its very simple yet filled with a lot of very intense little things, its fun to play!

  27. a.... a....

Ele é realmente um grande musico e acho que o único que merece comparação a este gênio seria apenas um: Jhon Denver.

  28. h.... ....

You said it all, sunhillow. I've never encountered a songwriter or singer, who had even a fraction of Don's incredible insight & vocabulary in painting the human condition. He seems to me to understand profoundly not only people from all walks of life, the dynamics in relationships, romantic, familial, & friendly, but also our place as human beings in the great scheme of life. & his songs which are works of art, are individually often greater than most other artist's entire collection.

  29. S.... ....

How under-rated is this guy? Seen him twice live. His first three albums are just utterly brilliant. Babyhowdy233 - we are totally singing from the same song sheet. The entire album is just brilliant. Anybody who's never heard it - do yourself a favour and buy it. You won't be sorry. Why has this guy never received the recognition he truly deserves. There's so much more to him than 'American Pie' - ironically one of my least favourite songs by him. He really has done so much better.

    S.... ....

I agree with you 1000% about his first three albums. He started to go a different direction with "Homeless Brother" because he was unwilling to sell out to the music PTB (read the story of the song "Dreidel.")

  30. S.... B....

Still one my favourate all time albums.Thank you Don.

  31. R.... P....

Babyhowdy233 said it all in one word: MASTERPIECE! I also wish more people knew of these incredible songs. Two of the greatest albums ever made are both titled "Tapestry". (The other being Carole King's) How serendipityish is that?!

  32. s.... ....

    winning!

  33. S.... ....

Wow. Don must be an amazing and profound person.

  34. j.... ....

I think there's lots of irony that Pul Simon is being refered to. Don Mclean was never paired with any other songwriter. Everything he did, he did on his own with no help from anyone. Simon is also an extremely mediocre guitar player. Mclean as a guitarist, songwriter and singer is singular. If people want to make comparisons, they should compare Simon, Taylor, Chapin.

    j.... ....

Paul Simon is an outstanding guitar player.

    j.... ....

A more recent (like the past 20 years anyway) singer/songwriter that I thought might follow in Don's footsteps was Jewel. Her first two cd's were very good and her voice and picking style reminiscent of Don's. Sigh. Then she went pop.

    j.... ....

@Madfret Mann thanks a lot for saying that. I think Paul, Don and John Denver they're incredible singers but also very creative guitar players. Their finger picking were completely different from each other.

  35. M.... ....

i despise american pie because its popularity detracts from all the other wonderful music don has made. also there's irony paul simon is being referred to, i've always dreamed of a paul and don collaboration!

  36. h.... ....

Explore him as widely as you can, especially his romantic & introspective songs, & his songs about the human condition in all its aspects. In my opinion, American pie is the most minor example of his incredible singing & writing talent. To my ear & sensibilities, Simon & Dylan are modest talents compared to Don.

  37. B.... ....

60 70s folkers were nothing short of genius!

  38. I.... B....

Who else is crying?, bloody humans we have taken over !!!!!

  39. j.... s....

beautiful.....but possibly too introspective!!!!......don mclean is a poet worthy of comparison with some of the greats .... dylan, paul simon, robert burns, wordsworth, hendricks, robert johnston.............................

  40. A.... B....

    love it

  41. C.... G....

I like this song for its poetic lyrics that make me think, and Don's cool voice and fine guitar playing are great, as always, but I wish the melody was more inspired or catchy, at least. Still, I'm glad to find it here. Thanks for the upload!
