Dolly Parton - The House Of The Rising Sun Lyrics

There is a house in New Orleans
Down in the Vieux Carr'e
A house they call the rising sun
Where love and money are made

My father he was a gambler
Mother died when I was young
And I've worked since then
To pleasure the men
At the house of the rising sun

There is a house
In New Orleans
They call the rising sun
It's been the ruin of many a good girl
And oh God, you know I'm one

So mothers you go telling all your daughters
Not to do what I have done
To live a life of sin, shame and strife
In the house of the rising sun

There is a house down in New Orleans
They call the rising sun
It's been the ruin of many a good girl
And oh God, you know I'm one
Oh God, you know I'm one

Dolly Parton The House Of The Rising Sun Comments
  1. L.... A....

Sons of Anarchy did it better... This is 2nd place though

  2. C.... H....

    Damn....sing it Dolly😮

  3. O.... ....

Great vocals, the story - so touchy and didactic

  4. g.... ....

It's like the male and female versions are two distinct stories, and both are great in their own right. It's just that... what is this disco shit?

  5. R.... Z....

The Voice is great, she sings fantastic. But the Music is not my style. Sad.

  6. J.... l....

    Muy buena . Excelente 👏👏👏

  7. a.... ....

It's about a women's prison in New Orleans called the Orleans Parish women's prison, which had an entrance gate adorned with rising sun artwork. This would explain the "ball and chain" lyrics in the song.

    a.... ....

aaron4wilkins I thought it was about an opium house, but I believe you’re correct.

  8. 8.... O....

Well at least she sang the song almost as the original lyrics were wrote. Nobody that I know of sang it as a girls perspective. The animals messed it up when they recorded it first and rewrote it

  9. J.... I....

The 3 worst things in history: The holocaust, the rape of nanking, and this song. NOT IN THAT ORDER

  10. B.... P....

  11. D.... D....

    sooo good dolly

  12. J.... D....

I like Joan Baez's cover better.

  13. T.... ....

How is she Christian when she sings about prostitution and stare in Texas Whorehouse? If she knew anything about Bible she would know modesty verses, anti lust verses, and would not be changing her appearance in which God created her... Shame on Dolly. Good songs but very fake.

    T.... ....

Cherise ......and what exactly did your comment achieve? Dolly has been entertaining millions of folks for decades with her lovely music so let’s enjoy that instead of passing judgement on folks we know absolutely nothing about. There was no shortage of prostitutes in the Bible either for that matter so I find your comment not only fake but judgemental, condescending and ultimately, totally un-Christian. If you can’t say something nice....

    T.... ....

Did she ever claim to be a Christian? And if so, when did this happen? If she IS a Christian, it could very well be that the things you mentioned happened BEFORE her conversion or during a time she fell away. Also, if any of us is without sin, cast the first stone.

    T.... ....

    Do Christians judge???

  14. R.... V....

    Very beautiful version

    Beautiful

  19. C.... S....

Really cool style for the video!

  20. .... ....

    이 버전도 좋다.

  21. T.... M....

Musically, no one can top The Animals' version IMVHO. But lyrically, she has reclaimed and amplified the original meaning of this very, very old song (yes, it well predates the '60's--by at least 50 years, perhaps by more than a hundred). Much as I still love The Animals' version, a gambling addiction just doesn't have the same impact as sex slavery.

    T.... M....

Joan baez the definitive & first version, before the animals claimed it & made they own!

    T.... M....

I don't know about that. Personally, I like Five Finger Death Punch's verson of it a lot more than The Animals' version. Not taking anything away from The Animals version, they made that song famous.

  22. H.... K....

Best version of this song, BY FAR. I only found it this year, and it blew me away.

  23. t.... o....

Dolly has the vocals and the talent for this song, the techno dance beat, however, does not:

    t.... o....

Yeah...this is a VERY strange choice of arrangement.

    t.... o....

Exactly/// her voice is perfect but the techno ruins it...

  24. t.... o....

Dolly has the vocals and the talent for this song, the techno dance beat, however, does not:

So long as the memory of certain beloved friends lives in my heart,
I shall say that life is good.

    Russell Kang rip

  26. J.... T....

This would have fit coven better

  27. E.... A....

This is the original meaning of the song.

  28. m.... e....

    c'est très bon!

  29. E.... M....

Beautiful song, indeed, both lyrics and singer.

  30. M.... ....

Dolly is a beautifully talented artist :) Her voice is so beautiful in this song

  31. K.... M....

I like dolly but prefer a slower version with some grit n soul .. She cldve amped this one up though with the background tracks and that would be cool. I'd luv to hear her full out Bc she has some strength in her voice but usually is pretty restrained and light on the vocal. But she has a sweet voice !

    K.... M....

Kri MD upbeat techno does not suit this track

  32. r.... s....

great song, great singer, emotional voice .

  33. B.... B....

    Did Leadbelly write the original?

  34. T.... F....

OMG are you F*&KING kidding me...this is a Joke. I Love Dolly, BUT this sucks, the Worse cover ever.

  35. C.... A....

    this is a lady

  36. F.... T....

I prefer this version of the song. obviously the animals version is musically superior, but dollys voice is on point and she keeps the original story of the song intact

    F.... T....

Well much closer to Bob Dylans version and closer to the original overall, goes to show that Mr D was capable of giving it the basic bent.

    F.... T....

Fred Thomason the animals were as far from superior as you can get. They were garbage. And this is coming from somebody who wasn't even born when either version was put on a CD or record album. I'm 24 years old by the way

    F.... T....

Fred Thomason this version is the one worth listening to. This version is musically superior as you put it

    F.... T....

countrygirl country musiclover .......I’m sorry but to write off The Animals’ music as “garbage” is incredibly ignorant. I suspect you only know them for this song since I can’t believe *anyone* (even vaguely) familiar with the body of work The Animals produced would ever consider them less than “important”, I think they were a remarkable band. Fronted by one of the best voices in the (Rock) business, The Animals were accomplished musicians who wrote poignant, relevant lyrics and arguably, some of the finest protest songs of the era. I love Dolly and her version of this song but Eric and the band were a whole lot more than HOTRS. I enjoy loads of different musical artists but The Animals have always been up with the best.

    F.... T....

countrygirl country musiclover ........Dolly sounds lovely but the music here is far from “superior” and you deem The Animals “garbage”? I think you’ll find the other commenter (Fred) actually said The Animals version was “obviously musically superior” and it most certainly is.

  37. S.... C....

Well.. this is an interesting rewrite that completely changes the meaning of the song.... I guess. Her singing is beautiful as always.

    S.... C....

It's an alternative version. Both versions have a long story behind them. As for which one was the original... who knows?

    S.... C....

The song actually was originally about a female prostitute. The Animals' version which is the most popular is the change one, she just made the original meaning more obvious. I personal like the remake but this song would be much better if they just stripped it to be her vocals and not the rest.

    S.... C....

I have searched and searched. The original recorded lyrics from the 30s talk about being lead astray by gambling drunk husband or lover and the going to prison. Knowing what I know about certain turns of phrase the Appalachian old folk would use (grandparents) and finding out there was a woman's prison in New Orleans w a sun on the side it more sounds like the age old tale of wife killing dead beat husband and being sentenced to life in prison. But that's just my take.

    S.... C....

    Finally, of course!

  38. W.... L....

where has this been all of my life and when the hell did it come out what the f dolly is The Rock dentist

  39. P.... C....

The guitar part reminds me of While My Guitar Gently Weeps by the Beatles!

  40. j.... ....

She made a hole in the ozone just with her hair spray products

    j.... ....

lmaoooo. !!! I always liked Dolly tho. She had her own way of doing things.Super talented lady.

    j.... ....

They say, "The higher the hair, the closer you are to God." LOL!

    j.... ....

    As she should

  41. B.... H....

This is an amazing song! I love this and 9 to 5

  42. B.... B....

The singing would give me chills, except for the LOUSY INSTRUMENTALS. The music totally overpowers Dolly. Who the hell produced this dreck? But yes. The lyrics make a lot more sense this way.

    B.... B....

No. This song is old has hell, and Dolly made is own version. And Bunny B., yes: Dolly and the lyrics are the only good parts of the cover, the rest sucks.

    B.... B....

    @Adriana Pignolo
Adriana!  Yours is a much better name than 'Adrienne', which East Coast Americans mispronounce in horrible ways (And you should hear them say 'clique').    Actually, 'Adriana' confers much more power than 'Adrienne'.

    B.... B....

    @Bunny Biedenharn
    hahaha thanks

    B.... B....

Vlad - Get your facts straight. The Animals covered it in 1964. This song is way older than that and does not have a conclusive author. The recording by Josh White in 1947 is believed to be the first recording with the current attributed lyrics. Although facts point to this song, or at least the melody, having originated far earlier.

    B.... B....

Yeah no the song is an old folk song sang by prostitutes

  43. N.... D....

@Maria Spin the Animals have almost that exact lyric in their cover. "Well, I got one foot on the platform, The other foot on the train. I'm goin' back to New Orleans To wear that ball and chain"
Also, the covers by Libby Holman and by Joan Baez have a lyric that has a similar concept. "I'm going back to New Orleans. My race is almost run. I'm going back to spend my life Beneath that rising sun."

  44. r.... ....

Ah Dolly. :) The greatest pair of tits to have the greatest pair of lungs!

    r.... ....

r0bw00d you do realize she's old enough to be your grandma

  45. J.... A....

Dolly's version is good. but plays a bit on the hooker story... I do like both the Animals and this version though

  46. N.... ....

Actually, the oldest on record comes from the early 30's, maybe 1934 from Clarence Ashley. There is a copy of him singing it kept in the Appalachian Archives at ETSU. He stated that he had actually learned the song from his father. There were additional lyrics added in the late 1940's.

    N.... ....

Alger "Texas" Alexander recorded it in 1928. There is an extensive discussion about it on the Leadbelly version. (The one where Leadbely's wife is actually singing.)

    N.... ....

It actually dates back as far as the 19th Century.

  47. L.... ....

It's not oddly spelled. It's French. Vieux Carré means Old Square.

  48. M.... P....

    Erotic .... :3

  49. M.... ....

Keep working to pleasure those men Dolly!

  50. C.... H....

"House Of The Rising Sun" hit number 14 in 1981 in Billboard.

  51. s.... ....

^^It's not odd it's French for Old. Don't live in New Orleans but I'm french and I'm also being picky when my language is called "odd" :P

  52. M.... S....

yeah agree. i also liked haley rainheart's new version.

  53. M.... S....

my mother used to sing it with an additional verse i didn't yet find in the net. it was like "i've got one foot on platform the other foot on train, i'm going back to rising sun, to wear that ball and chain"

    M.... S....

Maria Spin as I recall thats from the original Version by "the animals"

    M.... S....

Dylan did a version with that verse in it

  54. V.... ....

Not true. Research it a little. The point of view was male originally, and has been changed many times. It could be about a brothel, no one is exactly sure, but it is certainly not about a woman who works in one. This version is nowhere close to the original.

  55. C.... ....

Eh, I don't really like this version. I think for me it's a tie between Bob Dylan and The Animals for the best version. I mean it's good, just not my style.

  56. K.... ....

@Droideka133 You have NO IDEA what i listen to, so stfu

  57. D.... ....

@KinjiMuto3 Horrible ? Im sorry buddy , but must not have ANY musical experience or taste

  58. K.... ....

I love this version, like all the rest...You have to appreciate the style of it. It feels so Hollywood---like i'm sure Tarantino would find an oddly suitable use for it .

  59. a.... w....

@eemmeennddeell thanks for that bit of information! i hadnt realised that it was originally for a woman :)

  60. E.... M....

The song is much older than The Animals. It was originally written to be sung by a woman who worked in a brothel. Not sure if the exact lyrics were as Dolly sings them, but they are certainly closer to the original. The lyrics were later changed to be sung by a man about being a gambler.

  61. D.... ....

This song is on my keyboard XD

  62. M.... l....

@journeyquest1 Well Dur its an old song THE ORIGINAL was from the 60s so yea by the animals

    M.... l....

No, the original dates to the 1920's, or earlier.

  63. j.... ....

Vocals are nice but the music is a little cheesey. Like something from a 70s sitcom or disco hall.

  64. K.... ....

God this is horrible, I'm sorry... Animals >>> Dylan >>> Frijid Pink >>> Karaoke version >>> This

  65. d.... ....

i love this song i have it on cd

  66. a.... w....

@iwantdeanscar311 Sorry about that! I thought i missed the 'x' off the end, i tried putting an annotation over it but it wouldnt work! its not picky its just being observant :)

  67. a.... w....

    @lahcp88
I got it from her cd 9 to 5 and Odd jobs
