This is a natural musical progression of a lot of old traditional tunes as noted by other commenters. I'd like to add the "flying sparrow/bird" theme. A wronged/deserted/longing lover flying to the errant party to scold/observe/lay down with. A good Appalachian example "Pretty Saro".

Not everything she did qualifies; far from it. But you could easily have seen Traditional, rather than Ms. Patron, as the writer of this song.This one....definitely. You could easily imagine finding an old Carter Family acetate of this song somewhere in Ralph Peer's vaults, recorded in 1925. But it is Dolly.

Interesting interpretation of an old song. I hope she didn't claim authorship on the liner notes. As far as rendition, I think the less produced versions by Seldom Scene and The Country Gentlemen, with more of the original verses and acoustic instrumentation, are more heart-felt, expressive and lamentful.

Because men can totally sing about this subject better than a woman. Lol ok.
