DJ Shadow - Urgent, Important, Please Read Lyrics

You dealin' with the new mosquitos, do placebo, I pledge, do 'em
Haile Salassie and 'Nito rollin' on mushrooms
It's quick with flu, I trend like Nipsey, blue
I smoke a blunt in a hurricane to get me through
Examine the fact, I took Thor's hammer from Cap
No silicone in the cone, this is natural rap
Technology killer, I can see the sins at the center stage
Since automation started when they freed the first slaves
My determination was birth from the birth of the first bent
K-k-kick an opp in the face with a steel-toe Timberland
Floatin' through a wormhole, back, was like, "What's the semblance?"
If this the endgame, directed by John Singleton
We been the best, it's the best, what's the fuckin' concept?
Will Smith was Aladdin and the last man alive
So fuck you, nigga, the last one's left, what's up?

My niggas forever been poor, competitive for the bread
In the land where the only good president is a dead one
And the only real protection is a handgun
Liquor shots for the dead, homies on that redrum
Yeah, yeah, yeah
And the rich get richer, and we get whatever the rich get sick of
And each year we diggin', the ditch get bigger
You eat shit for dinner, your bitch get thicker

Wrote this in hell on the floor with a crayon
Ghost in the shell, I'm performin' a seance
I broke the spell, the thoughts that they pray on
And fuckers can't control a soul full of chaos
American gods, the Devil is barred
And Heaven is torn apart when I settle the score
Develop the form, a man could never be more different
I'm at the floor for killin', never before witnessed

Deletin' every record, you know what I mean?
Puttin' my mind on my money, downloadin', flee the scene clean
Keepin' busy with algorithms, makin' 'em dizzy
Put them on Ganon, watch how quickly the pricks'll forgive me
They overdid it with no permission, they startin' drama
Like this the dimension where Biff is married to Marty's mama
They're disrespectin' niggas, connection, they outta power
They'll come back to me in they darkest hour

Everywhere I go, people that I know
Tell me how I glow, my soul is a light show
Since hall of voodoo, Ryan always said I was right though
Clean is good, watchin' WCW Nitro
The gangsta ain't testin' so they figured they try more
Paint they selves in the corner, then they wind up at my door
Like, "What up, dawg?
How you feelin', mane?
What you workin' on?"
The homies want the green like they sayin', "Turn it on"

The futurist got us sayin', "It's all"
But in the land of technology, the hacker is God
Who everybody charge or church up, get prepared
Hopin' the social media buy your heads for bread, yeah
Type of hype got nihilists gettin' scared, yeah
Better life you fightin', but unaware, yeah
Whoever knew revelation was really you?
Revelation will get the babies wakin' up out the plantation

Nailed it!!! Delivery of our current status$🌎
Many already in the algorithm and looking from the inside out. Hi-five to all that never joined FB and associated information vacuums. I tip my hat to you lads for a well delivered message many need to hear. Look forward to the next Australian Tour mate.

  2. S.... L....

Some good shit. Sir Lancelot aporoves

  3. A.... F....

    So there's this thing...
It's called the theory of planned behavior
You started to predict an individual's intentions to engage in a behavior
At a specific time and place
I don't know if you've been looking at your phones or looking at your screens, but, um...
    Careful with your info

    [Verse 1]
You dealing with the new mosquito
    Through placebo I clutch doom
Haile Selassie and Nina rolling on mushrooms
It's quick with flu, I trend like Nipsey Blue
I smoke a blunt, in the hurricane to get me through
Examine the fact, I took Thor's hammer from Cap
No silicone in the cone, this is natural rap
Technology killer, I can see the sins of the center stage
Since automation started when they freed the first slaves
My termination was birthed from the birth from the first bet
K-k-kick an opp in his face with a steel-toed Timberland
Floating through a wormhole, backwards like what's the symbol is
If this the end-game, directed by John Singleton
We been the best since the best was a fuckin' concept
Will Smith was Aladdin and the last man alive, so fuck it, nigga, the last one's left, what's up

    [Bridge]
Everyone wants to feel in control!
In the same breath they wanna pay top dollar to be told what they like, and what they don't
So it seems to me this confusion is a human error
We keep allowing this to grow, the machines are gonna win
I'm-I'm gonna be the first to say it

    [Verse 2]
My niggas forever been poor, competitive for the bread
In the land where the only good president is a dead one
And the only real protection is a handgun
Liquor shots for the dead, homies on that red rum (Yeah, yeah, yeah)
    And the rich get richer
And we get whatever the rich get sick of
And each year, we diggin' a ditch, get bigger
You eat shit for dinner, your bitch get thicker
H-h-h-hold this in hell on the floor with a crayon
Ghost in the shell, I perform in a séance
I broke the spell, the thoughts that they prey on
The fuckers can't control a soul full of chaos
American gods, the devil is born
And heaven is torn apart when I settle the score
Develop the form of man that never been more different
A metaphor for killin' never-before witness (Uh, uh-huh)

    [Verse 3]
Deleting every record, you know what I mean
Puttin' mind on my money, downloadin', flee the scene, clean (uh)
Keep 'em busy with algorithms, making 'em dizzy (uh)
Put them on game and watch how quickly the pricks will forgive me
They overdid it, with no permission, they started drama
Like it's the dimension where Bif married to Marty's mama
No disrespect from the disconnection, they out of power
They'll come back to me in their darkest hour
Everywhere I go, people that I know
Tell me how I glow, my soul is a light show
Since I was little, always said I was right though
Clean his gun watching WCW Nitro
The gangsta ain't tested so they figure they try more
Paint theyselves in the corner then they wind up at my door
    Like "What up, dawg?"
"How you feelin', man? What you workin' on?"
"The homies want the green light, they sayin' 'Turn it on,'"
A futurist gotta say it, it's obv'
The land of technology, the hacker is god
Everybody charge or church up, get the bag
Hoping your social media by your Instagram, yeah
Type or hype, got nihilists getting scared, yeah
Better life, you fightin' but unaware, yeah
Whoever new revelation is really a revelation
Forget the babies waking up off of the plantation

    [Outro]
    DAMN!
    So there you have it
A few different perspectives to reinforce the notion that you are not going crazy
And you are not being paranoid
And everything that you've been worrying about are the exact things that need to be on your mind
    The question is...
What do we do about it?
    You know?

I have lot of time for DJ Shadow over the years, among other things. Heard this on 6music the other day and nearly fell over all my tools trying to get to the radio to see who it was making this genius noise!
Everything clearly came together bang-on during the making of this!
As somebody else commented, I’ve listened to this probably 30 times and it’s still great...and will be in 20 years. Best tune I’ve heard for ages in any genre!

  45. t.... t....

    nihilists gettin scared, whoaaa

  46. t.... t....

    creating algorithms, makin me dizzy

  47. t.... ....

I've always disliked DJ Shadow's music. I find it quite depressing to listen to - it's dark in a totally uninteresting way. It doesn't make me want to dance, help me relax or make me think - it exists in this musical void for me. This tune has a little swing to it but it sounds pretty played out and corny to my ears, like every indie rap label has put out ten versions of this song since 2001.

If you like DJ Shadow can you describe why and how his music makes you feel, thanks 👍

    t.... ....

MadArticDriver I rarely enjoy live music to be honest.

    t.... ....

Bradley Goo just did, reverb heavy drums and boring guitar playing a scale, meh

    t.... ....

The entroducing album..came out when I was at art college and it just played out 24 / 7..and entwined with student film work etc..really good memories. I understand what you mean..as sampling is not a traditional form of making music..so it probably lacks a euphoric feeling for some. Fair enough. Art, music and literature do not always have to give feelings and of positivity and happiness.

    t.... ....

Ben Hartley setting is important. I think the issue is the only thing DJ Shadows music makes me feel is depressed, I don't mind "dark" sounding music but it has to do something interesting. I've been making sample based music since 1996 so I've got a wide understanding of how to use samples and how others have used samples.

  48. M.... 8....

  62. C.... A....

I've listened to this multiple times per day since its release. It's the first track I play whenever I get in the car or put on headphones. Most of the time, I listen back to back. Everything about it slaps.

EDIT: I've listened to the entire album several times now (and the special bonus wax). The album flow is amazing.

it’s double edged sword, good and bad. Only bad overall if we aren’t conscious of the other side of the blade - or if we are without the capacity to avoid its cuts.

The banality of evil here may be more sinister than most of the shadowy conspiratorial theories/realities.

  65. S.... G....

I am not much of a hip hop fan but this is one of the greatest tracks I've heard. Huge momentum in the drums and flow, badass tones and attitudes and stomach churning sub track. Damn I love the sub bass in this. Turn it up. This is up there with his work with RTJ. I said UP there. It's fuckin rad. Nice work

    S.... G....

If you enjoy speaker-breaking sub bass, you may appreciate Dead Prez's "Hip Hop" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oiusDE0KND8

  66. S.... G....

Holy shit you guys. Holy shit. I am preh damn amped for this double album!!!!!

  67. B.... ....

OK this is phenomenal, BUT can I just point out

"The machines are gonna win, Ima be the first to say it"?

Bruh people been saying that for a hundred years.

    B.... ....

Yeh it's a figure of speech rather than a literal claim.

    B.... ....

    But yes.

    B.... ....

It's a joke on how this is a common saying.
