I researched this song and I believe it is about there being two sides fighting over gun control. Both sides believe they are the absolute correct side and the lyrics say "why did both of us have to believe that we were right" "can we make amends?" "Could either of us have just been compliant for a moment?"
He says "we're tearing this family in two" as in both sides absolutely cannot stand for eachother and their grudging opinions are splitting the country in two main hostile groups.
