Dirty Projectors - Gun Has No Trigger Lyrics

If you had looked, you might have just seen them
Stretched in the background
You'd see the oceans swell
And the mountains shook
You'd see a million colors
If you really looked
Now quick the night draws near
Her curtain spreads quicker
The safety's off
But the gun has no trigger.

If you had looked, you'd be no one's coward
Distance, justice, power
You'd glimpse the password
You wouldn't need the book
You'd own both slave and master
If you just had looked
But now the banks all closed
And nothing gets bigger
The crowd will yell
But the gun has no trigger.

If you had looked, you might reconsider
Or just maybe you already have
They watch you sleeping
You watch their garbage cook
You'd weep a bowl of tears
If you had looked
But now the gate comes down
The pangs are growing dimmer
You hold a gun to your head
But the gun has no trigger.

Why these guys aren't way the fuck more popular… is a sad commentary on society today… Kanye is a genius. but these guys toil in anonymity??? Gimme a fucking break… David Longstreth is a fucking musical genius… full stop!

    E.... G....

@wewewewewe I was trying to say
"Kanye is a genius? and yet these guys toil in anonymity…?"
Kanye sucks donkey balls .. sorry if that wasn't apparent.. syntax error!

Now thats out of the way dickhead...
If you don't like it fine.. but I have been a musicologist and musician for 40 years, as well as a luthier and effect builder, Ive been around musicians all my life, I think I have a handle on whats inventive and whats not… in music.. (maybe not but its all subjective)
If you had an interest in music beyond mere personal taste… (which admittedly is an assumption on my part… but one I can be reasonably sure is true, by your drivel) then you might be able to identify what is unique and interesting about Longstreth's playing, composing, and phrasing.. that goes beyond average…. and ranges into genius territory..
In a world where fewer and fewer musicians even take the time to learn, let alone master an instrument… and instead rely on electronic tripe solely.. his talent is even more obvious… to those with even a modicum of taste and insight...
These guys actually have tons of fans among popular musicians from Bjork to Beyonce, and even David Byrne ..are their opinions inconsequential too Mr Shitbird?
But hey, if they are too off the wall or sophisticated for you, maybe you'd be happier in the One Direction page comments section..
     I wonder...
Why the fuck are you here anyway? To serve some deep seated insecurity by critiquing others critiques? How asinine... I don't like a lot of bands.. thats why I don't go to those YT pages, to complain that others do..
     ya puffed up fuckface...
Its ironically delicious that you accuse me of ineffectually commenting on society…

while  you comment: that my comment is the "real" comment on society … WTF?

That my friend… is a pile of dogshit… not nonsense..
Your sheer vanity, and intrusion upon my opinion, and into a topic which you have no interest in…  is the real comment on society…
yes Im fucking with you now...
If you like my views on the Dirty Projectors so much… you'd love what I have to say about The Fiery Furnaces..Dipshit!

    E.... G....

+charlie wired Jeebus. I couldn't wade through you wall of nonsense. You're not qualified to talk about what genius is, but it doesn't surprise me that someone who has a taste for nonsense also thinks he understands what genius actually is. Just stop.

    E.... G....

@wewewewewe Yeah,,, You know it.. all
Man, fuck you… are you basing an entire opinion of a band off of this one song? Do you even know what its talking about?
or have you listened to at least DP albums Bitte Orca and Swing Low Magellan… at the very least?
If not, thats entirely reasonable… what a dick..
Ive been fortunate enough to meet and do work for some truly inspirational artists, many were famous names I'll be considerate enough not to name drop here.. I have too much respect for them and not enough for you..
Through my 40 years work and play .. as a guitar builder, repair person, road technician, recording consultant, custom effect builder, amp builder, and as a musician my entire life…
I work with people who live, breathe, dream and sweat, music..
All we do is music… and happen to know a "little" something about it…
I'll take their opinion  over yours any day..
What the fuck do you do… anyway??
Are you a dentist? A roofer? A student?
or are you one of these electronic.. so called "musicians"
is that why your panties are in a bunch..?
Whats your idea of genius? Name an artist or two… (Id love a good laugh)

    E.... G....

+charlie wired David Longstreth from DP actually produced Kanye's single with Paul Mcartney and Rhianna

    E.... G....

+charlie wired Man this is so hurtful. I don't understand how someone can be so right but so wrong at the same time. The dirty projectors are great, and David is fucking outstanding, but Kanye has done so much for the culture of hip hop and rap. He completely revolutionized the genre. Please reevaluate your opinion as it is incorrect.

  23. O.... Z....

I am just discovering Dirty Projectors, I fucking love it!!!

  24. A.... ....

That bass and drum line reminds me of Dowhatchalike by Digital Underground...

  25. S.... ....

    Jaaaaaaaaaddddeeeeeeeee🐱

  26. S.... ....

    My jam yo

  27. D.... ....

This song made my dog vomit. It is, therefore, as bad as it sounds.

    D.... ....

    @wewewewewe
    tl;dr

    D.... ....

    @wewewewewe
i decided i would read your essay, so here's my response.

i never said i liked the song; i'm not american; i don't support trump and someone liking a song you don't is not ignorance... it's called having a different taste in music.

i'm going to leave you with a final piece of wisdom before i stop responding to you:

your opinion doesn't fucking matter on the internet where you're typing to people you've never even met in real life... spend your time doing something more productive than talking about how you think ignorance is an ideology, and how people not having the same taste in music as you means they are being ignorant on purpose. you are definitely an individual stuck in a hole, man.

    D.... ....

+XsNiPeRPi3z You keep insisting that your fantasy that things "exist on the internet" and therefore don't make them real. that is beyond delusional. who knows where to start with that. Also, if you think a paragraph is an "essay" and takes effort to read, then your standards and capacities are profoundly low. Like that's a surprise.

    D.... ....

    @wewewewewe
'your opinion doesn't fucking matter on the internet where you're typing to people you've never even met in real life...'

    D.... ....

+XsNiPeRPi3z You go off and think real, real hard about whether that makes any sense. Put some real effort into it.

  28. O.... S....

    Reminds me of muse

  29. P.... S....

Would be awesome if Dave wasn't such a dick and drove the rest of the band off

    P.... S....

+Patrick Shamel He is pretty no bullshit and not in to to play games.. or sacrifice his vision thats for sure.… but honestly he IS Dirty Projectors.. these are "mainly" his songs (but the ones penned by the girls are likewise magnificent)… Bitte Orca and Swing Low were somewhat collaborative.. but Dave writes the outlines for most of the tunes.. I agree Angel and Amber were a big loss… but I have no fear that Mr Longstreth will dry up and blow away without them… He's one of those genius musicians who are really hard (but rewarding) to work with… As a musician Ive worked with a few people like that… visionaries and perfectionists..

    P.... S....

You mean Amber's not in the band anymore?

    P.... S....

    sadly no

    P.... S....

Snowball's chance in hell, but anything is possible. I'd bet my life savings on her not being on this album. I really want to know about Hayley and Angel. A big part of the sound is the DP vocal harmonies IMO

  30. A.... S....

I cannot hit any of these freaking notes believe me i tried

  31. E.... F....

was looking for revolvers with no triggers.... not some hipsters being emo....

    E.... F....

    Yes we do.

  32. J.... a....

kukły powiedzą co im każą, ale dobrze zagrane

  33. A.... J....

esta de poca madre esta rolita

  34. N.... K....

This song is now officially stuck in my head. It's good.

  35. N.... W....

This song is just so perfectly crafted.

  36. A.... D....

    Fantastic

  37. .... ....

I think it took me a little to see how much I loved this band. I started knowing I loved Cannibal Resource, but thought this might be a "one song band" in my list of music. I started listening to them, because Joanna Newsom (who I wholly loved right away, but also some hate and others take time to love) said this was one of her favorite bands. The two are certainly similar in how they can be off putting or blissful. I admire both their voices, because they have a certain humanity perfect lacks.

  38. h.... a....

Actually I really disagree. In this case, I think it's a matter of opinion and taste; I love how his vocals are kind of raw, and I feel it complements the almost angelical voices of the girls! Either way, totally respect your opinion :]

  39. A.... .....

Full on agree bro. It nearly ruins it unfortunately.

  40. M.... C....

    Holy fuck perfect

  41. R.... R....

Dave sounds a lot like Alexander Ebert to me

  42. g.... ....

    DEAD ON!!

  43. C.... S....

Oh man, you are so right. It's almost too good for that. Almost. This song sends shivers down my spine.

  44. g.... ....

I feel like I know what you're talking about, but I specifically love how he goes for more interesting notes than could've been done. Something really human about his little voice changes. A very strong singer with pitch-perfect tone throughout just wouldn't seem quite right with the atmosphere. Also, there's something desperate in his voice... anyway, yea!

  45. F.... ....

...total James Bond movie theme material.

  46. F.... ....

Love this track and they sounded so amazing at The Capital Hill Block Party last night.

  47. K.... P....

He was being pretty damn lame.

  48. B.... ....

I can't speak to their entire catalog, but he's perfectly on key in this song. If he takes any turns that seem unexpected, it's exactly what he intended.

  49. d.... ....

Well, we all know what people likes these days...

  50. S.... ....

Good stuff! I saw the video, this mornng (6/4/2013), at around 5 am and I texted the artist to myself so I could search it when I was more lucent! Reminds me of a GORILLAZ track, kinda.

  51. J.... R....

He has a very unique voice, and its another thing that makes the band so special. Sure, I prefer Amber's voice, but he's definitely a stand out vocalist, and not everyone's gonna like it.

  52. V.... L....

And you're a party shitter. Not a pooper, a shitter.

  53. G.... ....

Personally, I don't know what you're talking about. I don't think there's another voice on earth as perfect for this band as Dave Longstreth's. I really think the interplay between the two sets of vocals is what defines The Dirty Projectors, and it may be a sound you have to get used to, but I wouldn't have it any other way.

  54. T.... P....

    he's being LAME

  55. D.... R....

Why do people that dislike this music always pull this shit about it being try-hard, saying people only like it because of "this" or "that?" I've seen way more pretentious music than this. You just don't like it, that's all. It's not like they are deliberately trying to make music to fool people into thinking they are "good."

  56. V.... ....

It's funny because this is the most defensive commetn I've read in a while

  57. M.... ....

This sounds like the intro song to a James Bond movie

    M.... ....

A James Bond movie directed by Captain Beefheart.

    M.... ....

It might has to do with a composing technique called chromaticism.
Chromaticism can be described as the use of a small interval (the half step) to move between notes. This feature is emblematic of the arrangement of the 1962 _James Bond's Theme_ and can be found throughout versions of the theme. It can even be found in the inner notes of the opening chords in Adele's _Skyfall_ .
In _Gun Has No Trigger_ , the technique is used a lot in the vocal harmonies, especially during the ending of phrases. The half step can be a sharp dissonance, but a subtle use of it can bring a spooky feeling to a beautiful tune.
This might explain why you experienced a resemblance.

  58. D.... ....

That's just like, her opinion, man... You are lame.

  59. r.... ....

HAHA i think i thought that same thing one time i listened to this :P

  60. C.... N....

this. is so. cool. this is so cool. this is so cool.

  61. V.... L....

Leave him alone he's enjoying the song.

  62. d.... ....

    Experiment failed. Next experiment.

  63. r.... ....

This is an incredibly critical view of music that is in no way harmful to you. Perhaps if you were a musician with an open mind or critical thinking you'd understand that this is what people call EXPERIMENTING. Is it the lyrics you have a problem with? The way David Longstreth is vocalizing? The melody? I have the utmost respect for your opinion, but not for your petty complaints and generalizations. This band is only attempting to push at the limits and constraints of genre and form.

  64. d.... ....

Dude, you're fascinated with yourself. Get some fresh air.

  65. B.... U....

You did delete it. The comment now says "Comment deleted, author withheld."

You can choose to dislike whatever you choose to, I'm just irritated by the egotism of your comments. You speak of the importance of being receptive of opinions and of being able to expand your viewpoint, but it's obvious that you are too defensive and narrow-minded to do either.

  66. S.... D....

the reason popular opinion is a flawed form of critique is due to the fact the we do not exist in a vacuum, and our opinions are highly effected by our immediate experience, what we are used to, or think is "normal", as well as what is fed to us by our media intake. Very often people do not like things that they are not used to purely b/c it is not easy to immediately understand or feel comfortable with them. This is true when talking about art, as well as many other entities.

  67. S.... D....

Popular opinion is absolutely a flawed form of critique. Using musical terms, I find the harmony and texture created by the vocals(female) satisfying, as well as the contrast of rough/bright timbre at the end of each chorus compared to the dark timbre at the beginning. Longstreth's affected but very expressive vocal palette. The melody is ultimately fairly classical(which is true of most of the Dirty Projector's music) The groove is strong but also slightly broken and off kilter.

  68. d.... ....

    Criticism changes the discourse.

The rest of what you say is pretty defensive opinion with no real foundation. Popular opinion is somehow a flawed form of critique. Mmm, no.

Instead of focusing on defending things that are elusive to you, explain to me how this song is good to you.

  69. S.... D....

I guess you should ask yourself "what is to be gained?". As far as a structured analysis in the context of modern music, there is a lot to be said for or against anything. Judging the worth of anything by popular opinion at the time of the art has been proven to be a fairly flawed method of critique(favorable popular opinion does not necessarily correlate to artistic value). It is fine have your opinion. but all of your arguments as to why it is "bad" have been in my opinion severely lacking.

  70. d.... ....

So you're impugning my sensibilities because I do not enjoy this music? Do you have any idea how base that is as a critique? You can't accept that someone doesn't enjoy something that you do enjoy? Instead of accepting terrible art, perhaps you should refine and sharpen your expectations. Perhaps you should grow your own viewpoint instead of pretending the distractions of faux-experimental art are more satisfying than they really are.

  71. d.... ....

I didn't delete it. It's just below. It's simply more detailed now.

Yep, pretense is subjective. So are revulsion and annoyance. Lots of people seem to experience revulsion and annoyance by this group as a whole, and not just by this song. I would say that if lots of people are experiencing revulsion and annoyance by your art, you are not producing something particularly enlightening. That's also my subjective opinion. Thank you for asking my opinion.

    Are you defending this music?

  72. B.... U....

Since you deleted your comment, I'll reply to you here.

decadyne: "In order for music -- or any creative expression for that matter -- to be good, it should not come from a place entirely based in pretense."

Pretense is entirely subjective. Maybe you should adjust your own pretenses and become more receptive. Obviously, you've been subjected to someone else's.

  73. d.... ....

So you're saying if someone doesn't like something, they should never express that viewpoint?

  74. B.... U....

What do you consider to be "good" music?

  75. A.... A....

    amazing video....awesome track.......awesome band!!!

  76. 2.... ....

Bloody love this song. Discovered this group yesterday and I love them.

  77. Z.... J....

    What a masterpiece

  78. S.... D....

its fine to express your opinion, but don't think you know something about good or bad music. its actually hilarious to read comments made by people who think that they know about music outside of their own opinion. Also, if you don't like something, why comment? what good are you bringing into the universe? i know this is the way of the internet, but think about what you are doing.

  79. L.... ....

    Well, I like it

  80. d.... ....

You can be fooled, but I won't be. This is nothing short of profoundly terrible music.

  81. S.... o....

@tracehazarrrrd Just curious, but isn't everything 'different' considered avant-garde until it catches on? DPs are doing something unique and different, so why does that bastardize the music?

  82. t.... ....

I will not apologize, because you made the comment in earnest. However, yah, me and this band have a history. I've actually seen them live and kind of booed them, course they shook it off pretty much. I don't like how Longstreth makes these cool melodies and then has to bastardize them with all of his pretentious/avant-garde technical playing. I guess according to some they're an avant act trying to do pop? I think they FUCK UP pop, but I keep trying to give em a go.

  83. t.... ....

I actually put some effort into trying to get into this unpopular, atonal band which is generally not well liked by anyone and I get attacked by one of their Faux fans. LOL. XD

  84. t.... ....

typical hipster, with their better-than-thou attitude. My Opinion above ALL else! (like, you have no idea man, how hip I am, how AWESOME this band is because --I--- LIKE them. I know so much, I'm SOOOOO with it. Like, OMG!!!! O:

  85. t.... ....

your reply lessens my faith in people and society as a whole. get a grip CHILD.

  86. S.... C....

    sounds legit

  87. C.... D....

@ tracehazaard you need to listen to useful chamber and stuff from that album its gold

  88. f.... ....

    cool ipod commerical...

  89. s.... ....

the conan show has brought me to this band and im now a fan job well done

  90. t.... ....

they're such a hipster band, i'm trying to get into it but it's HARD.

  91. t.... ....

    god awful. :(

  92. a.... ....

I like the bass in this, wann learn it.

  93. Z.... E....

Try to emulate his singing voice with your own, you'll realize his style of singing is rather difficult. It's all in the Diaphragm.

  94. S.... C....

Although he has a unique singing voice, at least unlike most of the other new "music" tho. And hes not using the shitty autotune like other people that can't sing too well

  95. B.... L....

    thats so true!

  96. p.... ....

This group is a conundrum to me. I absoluetly love the melodies of the female singers on their songs, but the lead singer seems so out of place to me. He's not quite on key, and other quirks that I don't have words for. Its like a mix of beauty and the beast. Just enough beauty in the girls voices to keep me interested, but just barely enough to overcome the lead singer.

  97. J.... S....

    wena wena
