As a Geordie who used to go to Cullercoats & Whitley Bay & Tynemouth & North Shields in the summer to swim in the sea I absolutely love this song, unfortunately The Spanish City is no longer an amusement park,just another set of flats & a couple of pub/restaurants,at least the big white dome is still there,have to say my favourite DS album has to be Alchemy"live" the live versions of this,Telegraph road,sultan's of swing & Going home are unsurpassable

I remember 1st time when I heard this song and saw the video. Was back in summer of 1996 on MTV in a Sunday night show called 'Greatest hits of an year' where they showed old videos of any given year, 1981in this case.
I think I shed a tear in 6.04 where the shadow moves softly left and right. It was kind of emotional time for me; nothing heavy but I was working in a strange town that summer, didn't know anyone so was kinda lonely.

This song is my favourite by Dire straits and has everything going for it in regards to structure, musicianship and an element of spirituality . The last few minutes as noted by so many comments are truly outstanding and I think a lot of artists seem to overlook how to close a song out in a way that makes it stand out more. Other endings in songs that give me a similar vibe are the closing solo in "believe" by Lenny kravitz and the outro to Josephine by Chris Rea from the original vinyl version of the song from the shamrock diaries album
