Dionne Warwick - You'll Never Get To Heaven (If You Break My Heart) Lyrics

Mother told me always to follow the golden rule
And she said it's really a sin to be mean and cruel
So remember if you're untrue
Angels up in heaven are looking at you

You'll never get to heaven if you break my heart
so be very careful not to make us part
You won't get to heaven if you break my heart
Oh no!

I've been hearin' rumors about how you play around
Though I don't believe what I hear, still it gets me down
If you ever should say goodbye
It would be so awful the angels would cry

You'll never get to heaven if you break my heart
so be very careful not to make us part
You won't get to heaven if you break my heart
Oh no!

(If you break my heart, break my heart)

I can hardly wait for the day when we say I do
It's a day I dreamed of so long now it's comin' true
You will promise to cherish me
If you break your promise the angels will see

You'll never get to heaven if you break my heart
So be very careful not to make us part
You won't get to heaven if you break my heart
Oh...

La, la, la, la, la, la, laaaaa
La, la, la, laaaaa
La, la, la, laaaaa
La, la, la, la, la, la, laaaaa
La. la, la, laaaaa
La, la, la, laaaaa
La, la, la, la, la, la, laaaaa
La, la, la, laaaaa...

So 1960s-ish! BACHARACH and DAVID geniuses.

"You'll go to hell if you dump me." Not exactly the heartfelt breakup song I'd expect from this era.

    Anything Warwick!

  8. p.... r....

Stylistics' version comes very close to the quality Dionne present herein. One of her lightest and loveliest songs. 10/2019

Wonderful memories of September 1964. Segue that with Outside Looking In by Little Anthony (exact same billboard top 40 chart). Deejays loved to mix it up in September 1964 by playing the debut Kinks song You Really Got Me....in the same stop-set! Sounding nothing like Dionne or Anthony 🤣

What a great voice. It didn't matter if you liked rock, pop, R and B, soul, jazz, or country, everyone listened to Dionne Warwick back in the 60s. It's hard to think of another singer who had such broad appeal.

MARIE DIONNE WARWICK released fourteen classic and timeless LPs for SCEPTER RECORDS, including the two "Greatest Hits" LP compilations and also the one Spiritual LP. I still have all of them in STEREO. This was the song that made me butter in Dionne Warwick's hands. That was during the summer of 1964. I was going eleven years old at the time. This 45 RPM single was taken from Dionne's third LP entitled MAKE WAY FOR DIONNE WARWICK, released in mono (Scepter SRM-523) and stereo (Scepter SPS-523) on August 31st, 1964.

    B.... S....

Great Singer one of the best voices in her time

  42. D.... B....

Conservatory trained Dionne Warwick singing the wonderful and very complicated music of Bacharach and David. No wonder that this song still raises goose flesh on me after all these years. Amazing.

  51. W.... ....

1964 : what a year. I graduated from HS, & my life was all in front of me. This song so embodies the innocence we still had in our hearts, despite 11/22/63. Bacharach / David, at their finest. And Dionne's voice ----immediately recognized, even today. -------WolfSky9
