Dionne Warwick - (They Long To Be) Close To You Lyrics

Why do birds suddenly apear
Every time you are near?
Just like me
They long to be
Close to you

Why do stars fall down from the sky
Every time you walk by?
Just like me
They long to be
Close to you

On the day that you were born
And the angels got together
And decided to create a dream come true
So they sprinkled moon dust
In your hair of gold
And starlight in your eyes of blue

That is why
All the girls in town
Follow you all around
Just like me
They long to be
Close to you

On the day that you were born
And the angels got together
And decided to create a dream come true
So they sprinkled moon dust
In your hair of gold
And starlight in your eyes of blue

That is why
All the girls in town
Follow you all around
Just like me
They long to be
Close to you
Just like me
They long to be
Close to you

It's so much simpler than Jacob Collier's, no where near as impressive IMO. And yet, I prefer this.

  2. D.... G....

And to think people credit Franks sampling of Stevie to the carpenters version HA. They could NEVER. What an absolute QUEEN 👸🏿👑

  3. M.... M....

Terrible out of tune singing with bad vibrato technique. Her voice should have been doubled. She is also missing/changing some important notes. Not a good arrangement at all. The backing vocals are also weak and Richard Carpenter's are 100 times more powerful.

    I love Dionne!!! ♥️♥️♥️

  5. B.... S....

DIONNE WARWICK recorded her version first in 1964. This selection is from the classic and timeless LP entitled MAKE WAY FOR DIONNE WARWICK, which was released in mono (Scepter SRM-523) and stereo (Scepter SPS-523) on August 31st, 1974. Oh, by the way! Karen Carpenter was a huge fan of Dionne Warwick.

Buena version y una gran cantante. Primera vez que escucho esta cancion con dw.

Can't believe people are ranting about the Karen Carpenter version. This is miles better and more polished.

Dionne's pace of makong records was different in the early 60s than the pace of records in the 70s.. . Akso, Burt was arranging entire akbums for Dionne, not cherry picking songs that had already been produced, analyzed and perfected.
I think Richard and Karen Carpenter were a grwat duo, but if you want to compare Richard's compositional and arranging output to the compositional and arranging output of Burt Bacharach and Hal Davud, then I think you have a more fair comparison.

That being said, I do prefer the arrangement of the Carpenters. But Dionne soubds so wonderful and clear on this arrangement. Ger voice is the centerpiece! She's wonderful!

  9. K.... H....

Song doesn't suit Dionne's vocal talent. sounds disjointed. difficult to follow. Karen's Carpenter version much smoother, soothing.

Kristen Harvey shut the fuck up

    Kristen Harvey fantastic

Love Dione but Karen carpenter the best version forever.

All this proves is that Dionne prefers black guys with blue eyes. Seriously, this makes the theme of melancholic longing even more evident than the Carpenters version. And Karen was the queen of melancholy in her vocals. Also shows how clever ...

and terribly underrated Richard was an an arranger.

Its like joking.....ahah.....carpenter version is better

want this song at my funeral

Interesting sparse music in the verses.  Dionne's voice following ting ting ting ting of the piano in the chorus.   Dionne goes a little out of key on her ad lib around 2:10 I think.   I love Dionne's voice, one of the best.  Dusty Springfield did a great cover of the song also prior to the Carpenters but it wasn't released as a single.   It would have charted high I think had it been released.   Carpenter's lush music in their version plus harmonies made for a terrific version.

lol who let their grandma use the computer

    L.... R....

Grandma with great taste and a good ear.
    Later hater.

    L.... R....

@Lori Romano just messin with ya sweetie! keep on rockin x

  14. f.... ....

This version is a bit hard to follow and doesn't have the direction that The Carpenters version had. I guess it's the reason theirs was smash hit, and this one never did anything...

  15. P.... a....

This version has no drive to it.  The bridge of this '64 version is the only part with any energy. I much prefer Richard Carpenter's arrangement in '70.
This version is like a Christmas tree with the same type of ornament on it, one type...boring.

    ♥♥♥

  17. H.... W....

I actually think I prefer this to the Carpenter's version. The somberness of Bacharach's arrangement somehow mitigates the cloying middle section of Hal David's lyric (whereas Richard Carpenter's arrangement sprinkles on more sugar). And here we have none of Karen Carpenter's kitsch affectations in the vocal.

    H.... W....

@Herbert Wells I agree. To me, this is the definitive version.

    H.... W....

    I agree ;)

    H.... W....

    Kitsch affectations??

    H.... W....

AJB3 Right? That’s a sacrilege to say that about Karen. Anyway, Burt Bacharach said the Carpenters’ version was better.

    Beautiful song from Dionne Warwick!
