Diana Ross - I'm Still Waiting Lyrics

I remember when
I was five and you were ten, boy
You knew that I was shy
So you teased and made me cry
But I loved you

Then one day you came
You told me you were leaving
You gave your folks the blame
And made me cry again
When you said

Little girl
Please don't wait for me
Wait patiently for love
Someday will surely come
Ooh, little girl
Please don't wait for me
Wait patiently for love
Someday will surely come
And I'm still waiting

I'm waiting
Ooh, still waiting
I'm just a fool
Ooh, I'm a fool
To keep waiting

Then someone finally came
He told me that he loved me
I put him off with lies
He could see I had no eyes
So he left me once again alone
Like a child without her playmate
I had to face the truth
I was still in love with you
But you said:

Little girl
Please don't wait for me
Wait patiently for love
Someday will surely come
Ooh, little girl
Please don't wait for me
Wait patiently for love
Someday will surely come
And I'm still waiting

Love has never shown his face
Since the day you walked out that door
You filled my life with empty space
Come back
Can't you see it's you I'm waiting for

Don't you know I'm waiting
I'm waiting for love
For you, I miss you
I'm waiting
Come on back, boy
I need you
I want you
That's what my friends says

"I remember when I was five", and this Diana Ross Motown classic was the UK number 1, thanks to the efforts of the hugely underrated Tony Blackburn. It always made me cry, and today it's "made me cry again". Timeless! "And I'm still waiting" for a more heavenly record to come along in my lifetime. After one of the greatest intros in pop history, by 0.42 it has already blossomed into one of the greatest singles. By 1.22 it has become The greatest ever and a work of timeless pop perfection. By 1.47 it has transcended Art itself, and entered into an eternal aesthetic dimension beyond Time and Space, continuing until the fade-out. But it will never fade away.

  36. J.... C....

this was number 1 the day i was born..i was raised listening to these songs..still loving them in 2019

  37. G.... W....

Love this song total classic the line at 1:57 he can see i had no eyes imo that line means Diana is still hurting by the boy/man who left her at the beginning of the song & she holds strong feelings for him & wants him & no-one else & wasn't interested in the other man mentioned in the song & her friends say she's a fool by wasting her time on a man who doesn't want her

    G.... W....

A 5 year age gap... she was too young, he was probably joining the army etc had to leave home... it's an innocent song about a girl's first childhood crush. First heard this song while studying at home when the Irish tenant used to play her whole album through the wall. She unwittingly created another Diana Ross & the Supremes fan.

  38. R.... C....

This song talks about a young girl who was in love with this guy who never saw her as his lover. He may have seen her just as the child he once knew.

  39. M.... ....

    this woman....speechless

  40. E.... a....

My Mother rang me whilst I was very ill, I complained I missed listening to music, so she played this song on here and most amazingly and beautifully she sang along and transported me via my e motions straight back to the womb! wow music is soo powerful.

  41. P.... L....

I wonder if this song is about the Motown CEO who put a bastard child in her stomach?

  44. L.... H....

So poignant and thanks for sharing. Maybe you will meet one day ... I hope so. For me, this song reminds me of first love ... and yes, at Primary School.

June 2018 and still sounding as good as the day I first heard it on the radio back in the day-Thanks to Dj Mr Tony Blackburn-

  49. C.... W....

Brings back memories I perhaps should forget.

  50. J.... L....

Somebody sample this before i do .. i can hear some funky hip hop or dance music track

  51. J.... T....

    14 people are dickheads.....

  52. G.... W....

Diana Ross is a legend her songs are worth listening to compare to Beyonce & the depressing Adele

    G.... W....

Graeme Watson . Ain't it the truth. I will say though although most of Adele's songs are depressing lyrics that girl can sing. She has the chords.

    G.... W....

Have to disagree, Adele doesn’t sing, she just shouts, Diana Ross can sing

  53. w.... ....

I was a baby when this was a UK #1 hit. I discovered this gem around 1980....and I’ve been enchanted with it since then. It’s such a beautiful, yet poignant song....it makes me feel a bit sad, but in a good way, if you know what I mean. Ms Ross is such a gifted balladeer. Each one tells a story.

  54. A.... d....

What a hit my mum loved this in the seventies my sis told me this reminded of her crush

  55. C.... W....

My favourite Diana Ross song, gorgeous

  56. P.... W....

    Fantastic singer!?

  57. G.... G....

Mixed emotions....That this track was created is one of life's wonders... But to think tracks like this wont be made ever again is very sad. Every generation until the end of days should get the chance to at least hear this stuff.

    G.... G....

Don't you think it sounds like "Chasing Pavements" by Adele a bit?

  58. k.... ....

I'm just a fooool! Love singing this chorus, in falsetto of course. Really great song. The talking bit is a party piece, "Love has never shown its face.......", I even do my effort of her Detroit accent bits.

  59. g.... ....

One of the most beautiful songs of all time. It tells such a great and coherent story with so few words.

  60. P.... B....

The opening instrumental of this song, reaches deep within and grabs my soul....memories come flooding back - good and sad....but the opening just stops me in my tracks

  61. h.... l....

this song always will be a classic go girl

  62. D.... M....

    I'm still waiting too.....

  75. R.... n....

Did she just sing he left her coz she had no arse?

    R.... n....

sadly u have no music sense. its a song a beautiful song ass or no ass bro.

    R.... n....

I have to agree with you. It is gorgeous

  76. W.... ....

The 3OH!3rd UK #1. (I can't believe I just made that reference. 3OH!3 were awful.)

A departure from the other Motown discs I've heard so far, this shows of Ross's 'softer side', as I so quaintly put it. The idea works, but it gets old after a while if you're used to the upbeat classics I previously rated.

    6.7/10 ("OK")

  77. o.... ....

sooooo sad but beautiful and haunting.

    o.... ....

    Does it give you shivers?

  78. J.... E....

The phenomenol Diana Ross has it all, she's beautiful, has the voice, sensual, charming & oozes star qulity, this made her stand out all through the 60s to this day, a mother of 5 kids, yet it barely shows, she has spawned so much copy cats like the Beyonces & Rihannas of this world, there's only one Le Boss

    J.... E....

J Eshun . Say it again. Thats right. What I dont like about the copycats is that they dont even give Diana Ross her props. They come nowhere near close to her.

  79. J.... K....

i made a beat of this song! https://soundcloud.com/jura-kez/still-waiting

  80. E.... D....

I have a 1990 remix of this on a cd. The original version is the best. She was beautiful then and is still beautiful now. A diva with a fab voice :) x

  81. K.... W....

I was in strangeways on my way to borstal  1971 when this song was out I loved it. The song I mean.

  82. M.... W....

I HEARD THIS SONG WHEN I WAS A KID......FINDING OUT ABOUT LIFE AS YOU DO !!!!!!!! WILL NEVER FORGET IT EVER..........

  83. M.... W....

POSSIBLY THE BEST TAMLA MOTOWN SONG THAT WAS EVER MADE.......MY OPINION !!!

  84. d.... t....

4 people still like the bay city rollers

  85. S.... F....

Tony Blackburn made this into a UK no 1- Diana had no intention of it being a single.

    S.... F....

You mean motown wasn't going to release as a single

    S.... F....

@Mic It was because of Tony Blackburn constantly playing it on his show that Motown released it as a single. Apparently Diana Ross had to re-learn the song because it was just an insignificant track on her album! LOL

  86. E.... A....

My first memory in life was this song... strange but true!!

    E.... A....

    +Edward Austin that's sad

  87. t.... g....

Thanks for the message Joan. I am now a professional musician, but as a kid I used to play along to this song for hours and hours. I just love the groove of it. I wish I had met your husband,he was clearly very talented.

  88. A.... Z....

true music! you can feel a drop of heaven's love in this song!

  89. J.... C....

Great classic, it's funny how songs can make you think of things that have happened in your past that might not fit exactly to the lyrics but it still makes you think of it anyway, weird though it might seem to some, this song makes me think of my first few days at primary school where all I could do was just stand in a corner like a freaking lemon Lol watching all the other kids playing and getting along.

None of the kids in my class or any of the other classes wanted to talk to me or play with me, I don't know why but they just didn't, however, one girl, who was actually a good five years older than me and had obviously been at the school longer came up to me and started talking to me very friendly, it was as natural as anything and I can even remember talking back to her as easy as pie, I just opened up to her in a way that I never did  with anyone before, she came to me a few times as I recall, same corner, same time, she told me quite a lot about herself that I remember vividly which I won't got into detail about on here as you will understand, she also told me that she was in her final year and would be leaving, well, sure enough, not long afterwards I was never to see her again, she must have left, gone like a ghost, not a trace, like something out of The Twilight Zone, by then though, I'd gotten a little bit more confident and made a few friends in my classroom.

I just never forgot her though, I will never understand why she wanted to come up and talk to some boy who was standing on his own in a corner too scared to move when there were so many others to talk to but I would guess it's because she was a kind and caring person who was a bit of a loner herself and could see that I was in need of a friend, you know what they say, it takes one to know one, you can see someone who is like yourself in someway and feel like you can talk to them, be funny if I ever bumped into her again, I'm 51 so she'd be about 56 now for a start Lol, oh well, such is life, it's a crazy ol' world we live in innit? Lol :)

    J.... C....

+John Cashin this song reminds me of my first love ,,,,way back then ,,,,bitter sweet memories :)

    J.... C....

Thanks for sharing that great and moving story. I had two kids who did that when I was in a similar situation in school, a girl called Laurie and a boy called Mark (I opened up to them both, as well). Love shines in the darkest places, and conquers all. I agree with carpejkdiem as well, God does work through others to give us what we need, sometimes in unexpected ways and places.

    J.... C....

And what did it do in the US? Not even released! Nothing in the US.

    J.... C....

John Cashin try and look for her on Facebook or is she's in the neighbourhood still if you can remember her name? What a sweet story I was like that too i used to play on my own at primary school

    J.... C....

Very true John its the vibe mate cheers!

Tim, My late husband Deke Richards aka Dennis Lussier wrote this song. It never
did that all well in USA but sure did in the UK.. He also wrote Love Child and
many other hits for the Jackson Five, etc.
I am glad you love this song !

    t.... g....

+Joan pussier Thanks for your message. I am now a professional musician, but as a child I used to play along to this song for hours and hours. I just love the groove. I wish I had met your husband,he was clearly very talented.

Thank you for the kind reply.. Yes, Deke was a great guy, loved by many
of his fans. He also was a great singer and had his own band before he
was signed to Motown. He played guitar as well and I still have it.
Later on I will send you a link of him singing a song that he dedicated
to me. It will be up on youtube soon.

+Joan lussier Thanks Joan,I'll look forward to it.
