I'm older now and could totally relate to Mabel King "Don't bring me no bad news".

I like how the crows are just standing in the back sort of shuffling about watching all this play out like 'w-what are we supposed to do again?'

Most people have forgotten her, and sadly in this generation no one will even know who she was. I am from the generation that knew her from the Wiz (Black version 1978) remake of the Wizard of Oz. and of course as Mama from the TV show Whats Happening. After the 2nd season she was gone and the format of the show was changed. Did she pass on? NO she was fired because she was a speaker at the 1980 Republican Convention. So much for this being a free country and the first amendment. Looking into what public information is available now about her she was some kind of woman. King wanted the shows producers to take on more relevant issues in the Black community. Same as Esther Rolle from Good Times. But the producers decided to let her go. Now Mable was a big woman, but so beautifully dressed on the show, and she moved with grace and confidence. She had a trademark saying on the show " This is true " Great comic timing and facial expressions. The diction and clarity of her words was striking. What class! Passed on way too young, truly a great lady!

She quit the show because she didn't like the direction that it was going. The actor who played her son, Earnest Thomas, gave an interview and said this is what happened. She was not fired because she spoke at a Republican convention.

I performed as a Winkie in our Amateur Theatre Company production, and the lady playing Evillene was every bit as terrifying! Still, there's nobody to play this role like Mabel King. Her presence, and her vocal talents, play the part as it should be played. There's a deeper message, here, that I think is being played out justly.

Oh memories, they don’t make movies or musicals like this anymore

It’s like she put small extensions on her bald head

The first two seconds of piano are angelic and perfect

the song's incredible, as is her voice.. but re-watching this movie now as an adult, it's not shot or edited particularly well. This sequence is especially "mucky" and all over the place, literally. Too many extras swinging raggedy fabric -- fancy trick for a low budget and time crunch schedule. Static long shots, not enough Mabel close up, and chaotic but not clever choreography. One dolly shot, wow. Who directed this movie? But she's an incredible singer and actress. RIP

You do realize this was produced approx 40 years ago. Directing and editing and cinematography have improved vastly. For it's time and Budget , this is a great movie

The dancer/performer, in front- left (bouncing her butt in the very beginning)...DAMN she was funny to watch...and she literally sets the stage for this entire sequence. My GOD I love that woman's singing...and her dedication to that character is OFF. THE. RAILS. over the top...the EYE'S (just by themselves) are incredible ! ! ! I'd have given anything to be present while she was doing whatever voice-warmups she needed to do, in order to prepare for this performance. Right this moment, I can't think of anyone (in this day & age) who could come close to matching her, if this movie were re-done ?
