Diamond, Neil - The Windmills Of Your Mind Lyrics

Round like a circle in a spiral
Like a wheel within a wheel
Never ending on beginning
On an ever-spinning reel
Like a snowball down a mountain
Or a carnival balloon
Like a carousel that's turning
Running rings around the moon
Like a clock whose hands are sweeping
Past the minutes on its face
And the world is like an apple
Whirling silently in space
Like the circles that you find
In the windmills of your mind

Like a tunnel that you follow
To a tunnel of its own
Down a hollow to a cavern
Where the sun has never shone
Like a door that keeps revolving
In a half-forgotten dream
Or the ripples from a pebble
Someone tosses in a stream
Like a clock whose hands are sweeping
Past the minutes on its face
And the world is like an apple
Whirling silently in space
Like the circles that you find
In the windmills of your mind

Keys that jingle in your pocket
Words that jangle in your head
Why did summer go so quickly?
Was it something that I said?
Lovers walk along a shore
And leave their footprints in the sand
Was the sound of distant drumming
Just the fingers of your hand?
Pictures hanging in a hallway
Or the fragment of a song
Half-remembered names and faces
But to whom do they belong?
When you knew that it was over
Were you suddenly aware
That the autumn leaves were turning
To the color of her hair?

Like a circle in a spiral
Like a wheel within a wheel
Never ending or beginning
On an ever-spinning reel
As the images unwind
Like the circles that you find
In the windmills of your mind

First time I hear Neil's version. Very good.
Great video. Fancy, Michel Legrand's music played to a flirtatious chess game between Steve McQueen ad Faye Dunaway in the 1968 movie the Thomas Crown Affair.
The original song, in the movie , is by Noel Harrison (his father Rex of My Fair Lady).

  9. d.... p....

the most beautiful version i have ever heard and seen..thanks for the upload

  10. A.... F....

    Steve Mc Queen, un capo.

  11. D.... O....

Rex Harrison's son, Noel, actually did the version for the movie, but Neil Diamond definitely has the better voice.

  12. K.... R....

Now I know where they got for idea the Austin Powers chess match between Myers and Ivana Humpalot.

  53. p.... a....

    The video is the key

  54. S.... B....

    spins with magic of life

  55. A.... A....

My favorite rendition of this Michele Legrand's masterpiece of a song.

  56. 4.... ....

Diamond's treatment of this piece leaves it mangled and lifeless. Pity the video has to be scarred with it.

  57. B.... D....

Neil Diamond comme d'hab' massacre de chef d'oeuvre de Michel Legrand. A jeter!

  58. L.... L....

The game of chess reminds me of a game of Chess that I played with my flatmaye Thomas when I was 18/19. There was no time limits between moves so it went all night until sunrise, except there was no physical contact like in this scene. I did win eventually, but maybe he was just being a gentleman.

  64. d.... ....

    Great video!

  65. J.... ....

Steve McQeen == McCOOL!! There was not much hope for cancer back then, but Mexican snake oil really was a sucking way to die!! RIP McCOOL!!

  66. D.... M....

One of the most mildly erotic, classy, unique and beautifully interpreted love scenes of any motion picture produced especially by two of the greatest American actors of our time. Also, the lyrics and music arrangement is timeless and has been sung by many different artists. One of my favorite versions of this song was sung by "Sting" from the sequel of The Tomas Crown Affair played by Pierce Brosnan. In an interview with Pierce, he spoke about watching this classic film as a young boy and he said: "if I ever have the chance to play Tommy in a sequel someday I will change the ending because it was too sad." He did...

  67. A.... C....

    Nothing beats the original!

  68. M.... H....

This Gen-Xer grew up with my dad playing all those great 60s tunes--and my mom loving Neil Diamond.
The result: I have seen Neil Diamond in concert twice and "The Windmills of Your Mind," especially by Vic Damone, (as well as Neil Diamond, Johnny Mathis, Sting, etc.) is one of my favorite songs.

  69. O.... G....

This is an example of loving a film but not thinking it that gteat.

  70. T.... N....

the earth is flat ... brought me here ... 2017

  71. d.... h....

The 60's was such a great decade for movie show tunes!!!!!!!

  72. E.... S....

рокировку делают при шахе? это мелочи, когда прекрасные артисты и волшебный музон

  73. P.... D....

    time crushes everything??? oh well.

    P.... D....

La escuche por primers vez hace muchos años atras, solo piano, y antes del internet. Cuando la encontre, entre otras, esta version, sigue siendo mi favorita

  74. J.... P....

Movies used to be a place to experience sights and sounds that existed in your mind. Beautiful music...elegant un real people being something you wished to be.

  75. L.... B....

Neil Diamond's voice can undress anyone - he is so magnificent!

    L.... B....

    ◇♡◇◇♡♡♡◇◇◇◇

    L.... B....

Tottaly agree !! the best performance !

    L.... B....

    It reminds me of summer.

    L.... B....

I am already naked so I dont think it counts.

    L.... B....

Somehow , the Neil Diamond arrangements don't quite work here. Just a little too much.
A jazz score is more practical.

  76. h.... ....

I like to see Steve Mcqueen in a really torrid love scene. He is very sexy in a lingering way.

  77. M.... R....

Ohhh dear.. what a pure beautiful love

  78. t.... d....

    Too melodramatic.

    t.... d....

Yes over the top, Noel Harrison`s was far superior.

    t.... d....

But the best one is Dusty Springfield's, even thx to a superior arrangement.

    t.... d....

Nope! Harrison's was lighthearted, upbeat tempo; O.K. for lead-in to movie but emotionless, less pensive than Diamond's version which brings out the soul and drama of the lyrics as a stand-alone composition.

    t.... d....

Have to disagree, Diamond's version while competent is overwrought and unnecessarily melodramatic. It's high school theater or Ted Cruz "Persecution!" level compared to Harrison's.

  79. J.... R....

    great magnetism....powerfull   J.

  80. E.... Z....

J'adore ce passage du film avec la superbe musique "les moulins de mon coeur", l'attitude de chaque acteurs est très intéressante à observer, l'on voit une scène de séduction très remarquable.

  81. R.... T....

Excellent chess scene, but vocally, my idol is Noel Harrisson

  82. e.... j....

    sucks.........this song needs a clear,almost flinty, voice.
Not a boozy, smokey voice like neil diamond.

  83. E.... C....

I feel sorry for the ones that did not see the film....

    E.... C....

Erik Carmel. Just saw it again on regular tv

    E.... C....

and just because of your comment I watched that and enjoyed the god damn movie a lot

    E.... C....

Saw the movie for the first time a month or two. Really good. I’m only 13 but enjoy movies from the 60s.

    E.... C....

What’s the name of the movie?

  84. J.... A....

    Una de mis canciones preferidas....

  85. E.... v....

The most beautiful version I have ever heard and seen. Thank you for sharing.

  86. A.... F....

  87. R.... A....

movie and video clip that was put to this song aside......

there is something about the English version "The Windmills of Your Mind" that makes it much more hauntingly beautiful than the original French translation by Michel Legrand, which is the windmills of your heart. While both are beautiful versions, I don't know if there is just the disconnect I have with understanding the original because it is in another language, but the English translation is just amazing. And Elmer Bernstein frickin rocks!

  88. j.... k....

"Elusive butterfly of love" had the most profound lyrics ever written for a pop song.Just saying.Listen to them. The complete 5.4 minute version by Lind.

  89. m.... ....

BRILLIANT song by Michel Legrand sung so beautifully by Neil Diamond. Thank you for posting this awesome version of this super share.

    m.... ....

    Yes AWESOME and beautiful.

  90. L.... R....

    Impossible game of chess.

  91. N.... T....

    -34 degrees

  92. J.... J....

To me these will always rank as the greatest lyrics ever written for a pop/MOR song. Of course it won a hugely deserved Oscar for Best Song, but I think people have to really hear the song a dozen time straight to truly appreciate what Marilyn and Alan Bergman accomplished and how Michel Legrand took a string of absolutely stunning couplets and put them to a tune that fits them like a glove and is memorable, all that the same time. One of my ten all time favorite pop songs.

  93. M.... P....

    Is that Faye Dunaway?

    M.... P....

    +Mary Stone yes

  94. s.... L....

No, not for men this song!

  95. K.... C....

    one of my favorite songs..

    K.... C....

    @diane2u2010 nor Steve :))

    K.... C....

really a song so sad but so nice same time..

    K.... C....

and  make us remind the great Steve Mc Quinn..so soon faded

  96. A.... L....

What kind of car is Steve McQueen driving at the end of this video, it's beautiful...

    A.... L....

+Alex Land - that car was Steve's rare Jaguar - something like an XKSS.....think they only made less than 10 -usually for racing I think....sweet, eh? MD

  97. J.... P....

Movies were provocative. Music was just great. And then there's the actor/actresses to make you want to be in another place. NOW? All you need to do is take off your clothes and shake a fat ass.

  98. V.... M....

heard it at the funeral on Sunday, very touching. Wanted to cry.

  99. V.... R....

three legends together. the movie, the actor and the singer

    V.... R....

    YES, AWESOME.
