This song was written by Randy Newman. His family is full of arrangers and composers. Its no wonder why he said this is one of the best versions. Just listen to the insanely great arrangement/orchestration.

A song covered by many top artistes but Neil Diamond's version has the best arrangement, instrumentation and vocal timbre of all. Sung with a world weariness without being over blusy or over dramatic. Superb take.

On the one hand, I'm an amateur musician who was just responding honestly to what various artists do with canonical songs, and I really loved what N.D. did with this one. On the other hand, I do have some treasured memories from growing up with a mother who was a Neil Diamond fan, but we never even listened to this particular N.D. recording. Neil's is one of the few versions that remains faithful to Randy Newman's original brilliant chord progression in the "bridge" (1:25-:57), essential to the mood of the song IMHO. Well done.
