Diamond, Neil - Done Too Soon Lyrics

Jesus Christ, Fanny Brice
Wolfie Mozart and Humphrey Bogart
And Genghis Khan
And on to H. G. Wells

Ho Chi Minh, Gunga Din
Henry Luce and John Wilkes Booth
And Alexanders King and Graham Bell

Ramar Krishna, Mama Whistler
Patrice Lumumba and Russ Colombo
Karl and Chico Marx
Albert Camus,

E. A. Poe, Henri Rousseau
Sholom Aleichem and Caryl Chessman
Alan Freed and Buster Keaton too

And each one there
Has one thing shared
They have sweated beneath the same sun
Looked up in wonder at the same moon
And wept when it was all done
For bein' done too soon
For bein' done too soon
For bein' done

Diamond, Neil Done Too Soon Comments
  1. G.... G....

As you get older this song really hits home as you increasingly realise how breathtakingly short is our time here.

  2. P.... H....

I think I would have left out John Wilkes Booth.

  3. y.... m....

Your mom says that she slept with most of the people in this song. It's good to grow old.

  4. s.... v....

    Very nicely put together.

  5. L.... P....

I thought it was cool that you had Andy Kaufman right at the moon lyrics and picture.

  6. B.... ....

Tap Root Manuscript was Neil Diamond's finest work, and 'Done Too Soon' was among that album's best tracks. As far as the montage goes, I think it's great. I'm in my 70s and there are many faces (politicians and entertainers) I haven't seen since childhood. I don't know of an Alexander King, the humorist, but I do know Alexander King, the 1st Prime Minister of Canada. Yes, JFK rates higher on the 'Significant Figures', but so do Martin Luther King Jr. and Rosa Parks. But you're missing the point. There’s no one in the world who escapes death. Their lives may be brief, like the daughter we lost at birth, or long, like my brother-in-law, who is 98 years-old, but death comes to all, and no matter the age, and even when it is a merciful relief from suffering, it is always too soon.

  7. 2.... ....

Anybody who includes John Wilkes Booth in a "done too soon" song is a piece of shit and deserves to be 'done too soon' himself.

  8. E.... L....

    Stoopid mankind!

  9. E.... D....

A splendid job of visuals and a mostly forgotten, but incredible song by Neil Diamond. Thank you.

  10. J.... ....

    Wow!!!'

  11. J.... B....

I like the Asimov plug at :40 (during the HG Wells part) :)

  12. D.... S....

    Pretty darn good.

  13. E.... C....

    Nicely done.

  14. D.... K....

Now I know where Billy Joel got We didn't start the fire.

  15. M.... ....

Thank You! Beautiful job, truly a labor of love and a gift to all those who view it. Yes, we all have our celebrity favorites we would add, mine being Muhammad Ali. I don't know about the rest of you, but, after watching and reflecting, I feel inspired to make the most of the time I have left here on the Earth, however long that may be. I've always thought that was the point Neil Diamond was trying to communicate through this clever and thought-provoking song. The truth is, however, there is no death, only change. I hope I am forgiven for standing up on my soapbox, but this subject could be a little depressing without adding the very important truth that life is eternal.

  16. m.... n....

wrong picture for 'alexander king'. it's not alexander the Macedonian king but rather alexander king who was a noted  20th century humorist. there was also a scientist named alexander king but neil diamond does not refer to alexander the Macedonian conquerer.

    m.... n....

Alexander the Great suffered under the same Sun looked up in wondered at the same moon and wept when it was all done for being done too soon. didn't he? genius!

    m.... n....

not quite certain as to what this comment means but my observation was that the picture of alexander the Macedonian is not appropriate for the song as neil diamond was referring to humorist alexander king and not alexander the king. note that he sings 'alexanders king and graham bell' and not 'alexander the king'. as for calling me 'genius', thanks for the compliment. I will try to live up to the lofty  height where you've placed me and allow you to grovel at my feet, peasant.

    m.... n....

+me not you I wish I was as intelligent as you think you are what does it matter who he singing about it doesn't matter egg head, no body cares. Get over it and go talk to yourself at least you can understand your stupid analytical b*******

    m.... n....

@Yesterdays child Hey, back off you semi-literate and go back to licking your popsicle & pretending it's a Cordon Bleu meal, fool

  17. m.... ....

in memory of a work mate Bob Dean done too soon......miss you Bob.

This album and song were released  a year or so after my dad died and just before my girlfriend's dad (who had become a beloved second father) died, both of heart attacks. It cleansed me then, and as I approach the final curtain, it still resonates deeply in my heart. Thank you, Neil Diamond.

  19. C.... L....

l have lost all of my family and today you finally tapped the tears l have needed to shed. Thank you.

    C.... L....

  20. C.... L....

And we sleep a third of it, which somehow adds to the cruelty or irony, however you view it. 😕💔

    C.... L....

yeah and then comes the big sleep but that's okay it's been a fun ride but I wouldn't want to do it again

  21. C.... L....

Beautiful job. Love the meaning, and your lovely tribute.

  22. C.... L....

  25. A.... D....

one of his best songs and most under rated. excellent job of editing in those others we've lost too soon. and someone could do another with just those we've lost in the music world the last 6 months.

    A.... D....

+Anthony Davis Yes, a sad thing that we have a limited human life span. And thank you for the comment, and for our attention. :-)

  26. F.... ....

May we all meet merrily in Heaven.

    Most fine visuals, kudos.

    T.... ....

+Tor Hershman Thank you very much. And thanks for your time. Bless you.

  29. F.... V....

Incredible job.  Sadly the armchair critics will chide you for missing their 'Favorites'  The song is not long enough to include everyone who were done too soon.

    F.... V....

I've already been messaged about such things. Still, as the editor I had to choose the people that meant most to me, and not others. Thanks for the compliment. :-)

    F.... V....

You did a GREAT job. Neil Diamond has long been one of my favorites. I remember listening to this song over and over and OVER ... writing down the names ... and then getting my World Book encyclopedia and looking up every person.

Yes, I think JFK should have been there, and Lou Gehrig, Mark Donohue, maybe Thurman Munson ... James Dean, Janis Joplin, Jimi, Jim Morrison. But the well timed placement of John Belushi and Princess Diana ... priceless.

  30. A.... ....

A very nice job of putting together a most varied montage of all those "done too soon" but honestly, John Belushi but no John Fitzgerald Kennedy (our youngest murdered president at 46 - truly done too soon), Dustin Hoffman is far from dead and Thomas Edison but no Nikola Tesla (the most unknown most important inventor of the last 400 years)?

    A.... ....

The people chosen are those that made a personal impression on my life. Were I to re-make this style of video, I'd choose images that meant most to the modern world. And thanks for watching., :-)

    A.... ....

+Au60schild I bet you'd die if you stopped bitching wouldn't you?

  31. F.... ....

Excellent. So sad. We are all done too soon.

  32. S.... J....

Not very many women included except for some thrown in at the end.

    S.... J....

Suggest you recreate the idea/music with those you believe most deserving.

  33. H.... ....

Thank you. I hope he doesn't mind. I meant well. :-)

  34. H.... ....

Thank you....it was a labor of love. :-)

  35. K.... M....

well done in good taste. I'm sure he doesn't mind.

  36. n.... ....

Brilliantly compiled, very nice handling of a great song! It fits the tone of the song so well, I'm sure he would be pleased.

  37. H.... ....

Yes. Neil sure has an interesting view of history. I hope he doesn't mind my adding all those other names and face. :-)
