Devil Makes Three, The - Spinning Like A Top Lyrics

When I was a rover, met a four leaf clover, she was Irish as the day was long
I thought she'd give it to me maybe, now she's married with a baby, I've been dodging bullets all along
Man, we would creep but never lost no sleep, I would cut cat nip into the weed, nobody was the wiser but they could have been higher and it meant more money for me

[Chorus:]
Here's to not getting caught, doctor it's only a graze
Spinning like a top, running like a villain and the years are going by like days

School bus, I got on it, I was nearly catatonic,
I couldn't speak a goddamn word Homeroom class, forge a hall pass and we would get higher than the birds
My foolish nature, the chase for the paper, I would deal in the broad daylight
18 years old, head full of psilocybin and howling at the moon all night

[Chorus]

Small town shadows, clean out of sight, nothing to fear but the coming of that morning light
Ducking and dodging and diving for that rent, if it couldn't be broken, it could be bent

Washing dishes, stealing kisses, making our deals on the side
She said are you ready honey, we got gas money, going on a real long ride
Lying like a rug, prescription drugs, old guitars, new girlfriends
Everybody shunned me, I just thought that it was funny and I'd do it all over again

[Chorus ]

Love the song, but clearly a rip off (tribute) to Hank Williams - Howlin' at the Moon

  7. k.... f....

Anyone know the chords for this?

  8. L.... B....

    Very good music.... hell yes

Another Devil makes three song with heavy handed meth references. Drinking, drugs, political/spiritual oppression, and the end of days; name a Devil Makes Three song about something else.

    J.... O....

    Чики Брики

Again, though... I'm pretty confident. I wouldn't say that I "see myself" in this song, or in my understanding of the unique culture that exists amongst the community of meth users, but lets say, for the sake of credibility, mystique, and let's not forget credibility, I'm... intimately acquainted.

"Spinning like a top" is a meth reference... just one of several drugs referenced by the song. Should it be a surprise to anyone, with cannabis, prescription pills, and mushrooms all being less cryptically referenced in this very song, that meth might be hiding away in the lyrics as well?

I dont understand how one who hasn't had an extensive experience with a particular culture might reasonably feel (or perhaps even think) that there might be symbolism which is obvious in its meaning only to those from amongst or amidst that cult, and concealed from outsiders.

It's funny how with this band only, I find myself defending my interpretation of their lyrics so very often!! If you go to "for worse or better" and peruse the comments, you'll see a similar conversation I had there months ago. I think i maybe made a couple of points remarkably similar to ones you made in this thread.

    J.... O....

Jordan OBrien Also, many non meth users will say spun out or strung out to refer to being on any substance way too much for too long

    J.... O....

Jordan OBrien I got family in friends in a small hick town in Indiana where they love this kinda music, but unfortunately meth is very common along with anything anyone can get.

So I wouldn't at all be surprised to see meth references in a DM3 song, but I just wouldn't consider them to be really frequent or obvious, especially when they outright mention pills and shrooms and other drugs.

    J.... O....

Jordan OBrien And I don't think the references are like some secret thing, it's just most people who don't use substances have very little knowledge of them, so they hear spinnin like a top and don't even think of meth. I'm familiar with the phrases spun out and have family whose been to jail for use and manufacture, but I didn't think of meth at all when I heard this song. But it makes sense now that you pointed it out

This discussion is a nice departure from typical YT weirdness. Btw, there is a ratcheting noise as percussion throughout the track...ccrrrrankkkk, mayhaps?

    S.... ....

Can't have psilocybin in your head : Psilocybin is turned into psilocin in your digestive system.
But still, did you break through thanks to the heroic dose?

  13. C.... P....

I play this song at least 5 times a day if not more

  14. G.... N....

  22. D.... T....

    I like this song!

  23. B.... ....

Just so everyone knows, this is magical anti-cop music. If you got this playing, you will get away with anything and everything. I've been driving d runk in an illegal as fuck truck for a long time now and done real stupid shit with cops literally right across the street, plus there was taco bell involved. Most DM3 has the magic, but this song is the best.

    B.... ....

It sure does seem that way.

    B.... ....

I'm not gonna put this to the test, but thanks for the info.

  27. m.... ....

So.. this is the first tune I've listened to off their new "masterpiece" I'm sure. After first spin, the rest of the tunes have to be a let down. With Pete Bernhard though, I already know I'm wrong. AWESOME!

  28. J.... R....

I just saw them for the fourth year in a row for their New Year's Eve show last night at The Catalyst in Santa Cruz... This was the best one yet!!!
