Devil Makes Three, The - Chains Are Broken Lyrics
We used to get drunk and want to fight
Go out lookin' on a Saturday night
You had me runnin' like it was for my life
Drinkin' down fumes like that neon light
I was blind, now I see
When you're treated like a dog that's how you start to believe
You're gonna miss me like the masters missed [?]
We used take pills and hope to die
Sing ourselves a suicidal lullaby
Nobody drivin' and I'm passenger-side
You made me the master of the long goodbye
But now its chains are broken, I've been set free
When you're treated like a dog that's how you start to believe
You're gonna miss me like the masters missed [?]
So down and nervous I could die of fright
For lack of [?]
I said, I don't need no glasses, I got perfect hindsight
I say we pray for lightnin' and hold onto this kite
'Til its chains are broken, I've been set free
I was blind, now I see
When you're treated like a dog that's how you start to believe
You're gonna miss me like the masters missed [?]
You're gonna miss me like the masters missed [?]

This album makes my spirit happy. As usual. Well Done! and great work TDM3!
Heard this on SomaFM's Boot Liquor channel. I like the mysterious feel of the chords on this song.
I'm trying to figure out where I've heard this melody before. It sounds like the jam everyone dances to in Back to the Future 3
elbow, leaders of the free world, its amazing what a melody can be.
saw them live this past weekend and thought the same thing when they played this song
This song was amazing live
I just want to know why the void in the relationship is being compared to slavery? Seems weird and possibly offensive.
Why? Where do they compare it to slavery?
@Evita in the chorus where it goes, "When you're treated like a dog that's how you start to behave/You're gonna miss me like the masters miss their..."
@Norman Foote II Yeah, he probably was in a relationship where he was treated like a slave, made to do everthing SHE wanted with 0 say in the relationship. How is that wierd and offensive?
I love the Devil Makes Three and have introduced them (by force) to many of my close friends. That said. This album has a feel to me of a gospel-boogie written by a born again Christian. In some ways it feels like a polar opposite of their previous work. It isn't just a "new direction" (which incidentally I am completely for bands trying a new direction), but really an opposing direction. I think that may be partially why it isn't striking a chord with so much of the existing fan base.
[Edit] Maybe just to add. The fans got into them (partially) for songs like: Drunken Hearted Man, Waiting Around to Die, I Gotta Get High, Champagne and Reefer, Gracefully Face Down, Old Number 7, Shades, Spinning Like a Top, etc, etc etc. All top hits as far as I'm concerned. But to go from that to a song about getting off pills and booze is lyrically speaking a lot to ask for the fans. If its sincere and you guys are getting healthier and happier then I'm happy to hear that. All the best my friends, I wish you well. However, that translates into a fundamentally different type of music. Couple that with the major instrumental changes y'all have made in this album makes for something...else.
I hope anyone who reads this takes it as friendly criticism. I'm still a fan of The Devil Makes Three, will continue to listen to them and promote them, and if they find themselves in my neck of Canada I'll do my best to go see them.
maybe not a new direction...just an evolution. if they can not use their music to heal and grow, how can we be expected to?
Songwriting is great but production sounds way less gritty than previous albums. Still great but different - I'm sure this song live meshes perfectly with the others
The haters in the comments make me sick. This is some of the best devil makes three since the early days.
its ok. but its missing something the previous albums had. though i didnt really get into redemption and ruin either
This song is WAY better live. The other songs are actually almost as good on the album as they are live, which is rare for the Devil Makes Three... "Paint My Face" had a violin solo when they did it live which is missing on the album version but other than that most of the songs sound on the album like they do live. This song on the other hand, was WAY better live.
Love this whole album!
Long time fan. Seen them live twice. Not thrilled with this effort. Too much drum, surf guitar and slow tempo. Probably a good substitute for melatonin. Boring.
Boring is a good word for it
I'm just not feelin this album. :^(
this song is awesome! rest of the album.... ehh
That was pretty much my thought. Paint my Face is pretty good too but the rest not so much
Paint my face is really good
Brilliant !
Love the album absolute
I'm glad to know the chains are broken off of that couch now
I understood that reference...
10 point sss!!!!
