Derek And The Dominos - Keep On Growing Lyrics

I was laughing
Playing in the streets
I was unknowing
I didn't know my fate

Playing
The game of love
But never really showing
I thought that love would wait

I was a young man
And I was sure to go astray
You walked right into my life and told me
"Love would find a way"

Gotta keep on growing
Keep on growing
Keep on growing

I was standing
Looking in the face
Of one who loved me
Feeling so ashamed

Hoping
Praying, Lord
That she could understand me
But I didn't know her name

She took my hand in hers
And then told me I was wrong
She said, "You're gonna be alright, boy
Whoa, just as long..."

Gotta keep on growing
Keep on growing
Keep on growing
Yeah, yeah, yeah

Baby

Baby
Someday, maybe
Who knows where or when, girl
Just you wait and see

We'll be walking
Together hand in hand, along forever
Woman just you and me

Time’s gonna change us, Lord
And I know it's true
Our love's gonna keep on glowing
And growing is all we gotta do, yeah, yeah

Keep on growing
Keep on going
Keep on flowing
Yeah, yeah, yeah

Keep on flowing
Keep on growing
Keep on going

Derek And The Dominos Keep On Growing Comments
  1. D.... F....

Duane Allman appeared after great struggles, passed through, touched the heights for a brief moment, then disappeared.

  2. n.... r....

One of the all time best albums for sure but I wasn't really impressed with the cover art.

  3. D.... M....

LOVE all these songs! Thank you!
ALSO, Sorry - but who are the idiots who go out of their way to click on this link, expecting anything other than a perfect and FREE copy of this song/album, and then decide to thumb down?? Wtf, seriously.

  4. D.... S....

When a teenager, I first heard this album on reel to reel tape. What an outstanding level of talent that continues to stand the test of time - love it!

  5. A.... K....

I wanna know the 35 that gave this album a thumbs down.

    A.... K....

no you don't, you don't want to know that ignorance i'm sure.

    A.... K....

    @Otisx you're probably right

  6. J.... P....

My Sons named Derek because of this album. My wife and I both agreed long before he was born that if we had a boy his name would be Derek. To this day the ring tone on my alarm is Have you ever loved a woman. My all-time favorite song on my all-time favorite album.

  7. R.... M....

Duane Allman missed this cut so Eric loaded it with guitar..

  8. K.... B....

Fire the guitarist. The Derek guy.

    (God this song f'ing cooks)

  9. S.... ....

I was too young to buy this album in the year of its release, but my dad was not, so I've heard it over and over again, I'll never thank Dad enough for teaching me the musical culture which is mine today. This album is one of the most beautiful wonders that rock has produced and this song in particular always gives me the same thrill.

  10. C.... D....

If I was to do cocaine the first thing I do would be to listen to this song.. and then key to the highway

  11. s.... m....

top 5 rock album, although more a blues rock thing, just great stuff and almost every cut is top shelf. I was walking along second ave in the east village in Sept '70 with a friend and we saw the Fillmore East billboard with Derek and the Dominos appearing but we didn't know who they were so no tickets bought...dumbass moment :)

  12. W.... F....

I wouldn’t exist without this album.. literally, my dad told me
When he was drunk that I was conceived while this album was
Playing in a church parking lot lol

  13. W.... F....

    👌🏻💕

  14. m.... ....

About half of what first learned as a bass player came from trying to copy Carl Radle's parts on this album. This was before I went back and studied Jamerson, Dunn, Kaye, and the other greats. Radle supports these songs so well and locks in with the great Jim Gordon every time.

  15. C.... D....

    Hey paige

  16. C.... D....

Crazy how this isn't even my favorite guitar solo on the album... what a song though

  17. V.... W....

Mesmerized by Eric's layered guitars in studio on what he thought was simply a jam, Bobby wrote the lyrics in 20 minutes and suggested to Eric to do their Sam and Dave thing...Simply Magical.

  18. B.... S....

Blind faith > Derek and the dominos

  19. M.... B....

Some of the best duel guitar playing ever....LOVE THIS GROWING UP AND AT 65 YRS. OLD STILL DIGGIN IT...

    M.... B....

This is actually all Clapton on this song. Just various guitar tracks.

  20. J.... W....

    Guitar heaven

  21. e.... m....

It sounds like those guitars are dancing around and just generally having one helluva good time !! Love this tune.....

    e.... m....

Their good time turned into this classic rock album.

  24. J.... B....

i heard this wonderful song from mexico🌋

  25. J.... B....

A short, cool story related to this song. It was 1976 July5th at the Chicago Stadium, the lineup...Santana and Eric Clapton! Carlos took the room down with his performance, hard act to follow, when E.C made his appearance there was only one song to open his show... Layla he grabbed the crowd instantly! At some point in the show between songs someone in the crowd was yelling for Eric to play a particular song, i could not hear the request as i was to far away. E.C stepped back told his band the song and started in with Keep on Growing! So everytime i hear this track this is the moment that comes to mind. Thank you for your indulgence!

  26. H.... ....

This band is so unbelievably good - what a masterpiece of an album.

  27. M.... H....

Most magnificent coda in rock music. Ecstacy ~~~

  28. V.... ....

Best album of all time. Seriously. Try me in the comments and I will easily refute any counter-submissions.

    V.... ....

@Danny Forshaw That's another great one.

    Clapton is still God.

guitar interplay between E and D was so good! Never duplicated in rock. Duane left us way too early

    j.... ....

johnnykR9 Duane didn’t play on this track, and on I looked Away and Bell Bottom Blues, Clapton was the only guitarist here.
But you feel its influence in Clapton’s play, and the influence of Clapton on Allman. What a feeling between them ! One of the bast collaboration in music world !

  37. U.... ....

    Clapton + Whitlock + Radle + Gordon + Duane = Indescribably special

  38. R.... M....

    What a masterpiece.

  39. W.... d....

Bobby Whitlock genious vocalist and together they made one of the best Albums in that time, still one of favorits

I got this album out of the trash. Perfectly good copy, plays without a scratch. Recorded it to digital, drove many a mile listening to it. Never, ever gets even close to stale.

Tragedy! Derek and The Dominos is NOT in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame! One of the greatest bands and albums of all time!!! It’s unbelievable! The influence of “Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs” is immeasurable! Please voters and critics, please recognize greatness!

One of the greatest bands, albums and pieces of music in rock n roll history! This particular song is all EC. Many over dubs. You can hear Bobby Whitlock tell the story if you you tube it. Jim Gordon’s drumming, Carl Radle’s bass, Bobby Whitlock’s writing, keyboards and singing, and of course Eric and Duane’s guitar work on this album is unmatched. *Here is the bad news: Derek and The Dominos are NOT in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame! One of the biggest tragedies I’ve ever heard! We need an uprising to bring this to the attention of the music industry voters. One of the most influential and original albums and groups in the history of rock n roll. Please help! Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs. This oversight and lack of recognition is mind boggling!

    K.... C....

@Rick Johnson Yes it was Duane, but you are so right Jim Gordon and Carl Radle were the glue that held this family together for as long as the drug involvement would allow....so thankful we have this album to remember the workmanship they forged together ! Jim Gordon is and will always be the best drummer in the world to me, I'm so sad that undiagnosed mental illness was waiting in the wings to take him and his Mom down like that. I pray for him to this day and it's 2019 now ....

    K.... C....

    Fuck yeah so good

  47. s.... ....

I didn't read all the cool comments but did anyone mention Tom Dowd..The all time best Producer and Engineer? He had a HUGE hand on how awesome this album sounds...

    c.... s....

This album lacks highs! I can make it sound good with an equalizer.

    c.... s....

I suspect he had "bright" studio monitors, causing him to adjust the
highs too low while recording. Speakers are notoriously fickle!

  54. s.... ....

The late great Carl Radle on bass......so tasty.

  57. B.... B....

Jim Gordon is so good on this song and on this album as a whole. He was a complete genius when it came to drumming.

    B.... B....

It is sad tragedy how his life turned out. Lost in schizophrenia and incarcerated for life.

    B.... B....

jim had that rare ability of playing for the song, playing unique, and never being too sterile! feel, soul, and knack for playing beautiful parts

if any drummer i try to play like as a baseline, right there

    B.... B....

+Kevin- very sad, he was a rock drumming genius

  58. W.... ....

Bobby Whitlock was the best vocalist in this band. Doesn't get enough credit for the monster musician he was because of the big shadow Eric Clapton and Duane Allman cast.

    W.... ....

Bobby was incredible...But I love Eric's vocals on this album...

    W.... ....

And at that time, Jim Gordon was the best rock drummer on the planet. Life can be very cruel. His is a sad story. What a shame.

    Absolutely

    W.... ....

I'm in total agreement. I played this album to death when it came out and it was Bobby who always knocked my socks off the most. That said this is perhaps one of the handful of greatest albums ever. Rock would have been nothing since then if it hadn't been made.

Remember who played with Eric on this album.

    R.... D....

We do, but he didn't play on this particular tune :)

    R.... D....

it's spelled 'Duane' George and he didn't play on this song from the album. He was delayed so Clapton played his 'role' on this and at least one other song from the album.

  67. h.... ....

all this guitar driven music in early 70's from Eric Clapton/ Derek and the Dominos, Allman Brothers Band, Grateful Dead, why did blues music like die out? I want to bring the style back and reinvent and make it popular again in 2016, that'd be awesome

    h.... ....

the vinyl resurgence is putting Guitar back on the map! Viva La Musica

    h.... ....

Well, this is my music, too. The music I grew up on and still listen to regularly to this day. However, the answer to why musicianship-driven music played itself out in rock shouldn't be so tough to figure. It's the same reason jazz went away as the popular music--once it becomes a d*** measuring contest among bedroom guitarists (and sax players, pianists, etc.): the public get bored and up and coming rock wannabees want to play songs rather than first have to dedicate 27 years to their chops in order to rate a shot at playing in a band of some kind. I'm a fan, too, of what they used to call "prog" but I totally get why the punks aggressively shoved them out of the way (though I'm not a fan of punk, particularly): why in f*** do you have to learn to play Bach and Mozart concertos first just to get off your three chords and some lyrics about how much you wanna get laid? This music's still out there, only the bands don't top the charts anymore and you have to work like hell to find them in the morass/jungle that is DIY/Internet Radio environment of today. Who's got time for that once you're no longer a teenager?

    h.... ....

Listen to Tedeschi Trucks band ...

    h.... ....

hippiecheezburger Give Marcus King a listen. He’s a young gun!

    h.... ....

Eddie Van Halen's guitar style had a lot to do with the death of Blues in rock guitar. I don't hate him for it I just think that's what happened

  68. s.... ....

I saw them live on this tour in Cincinnati when I was 13, I'm 61 now and still lovin' it.

Elementary school during the late 90s I had 2 CDs. One was Grand Funk Railroads Were an American Band & No Doubts Beacon Streets. This was when I was living with my mom, but once my dad got custody of us I had unlimited access to musical gems like this.

    0.... ....

@junkerjunk Damn at 13? You were lucky. I wanted to see Tht Stones at Cleveland stadium in '72. I was only 12 So my mother wouldn't let me go.

    C.... ....

@BakingSoda isfun Check out his masterpiece on Harry Nilsson's "Jump into the Fire"- (beginning at 3:56).

    C.... ....

Clapton once said that Duane Allman was the only guy who really pushed him in the studio. Duane Allman was the finest slide guitar player ever. Fight me.

    C.... ....

Jim Gordon is a genius when it comes to drumming.

    C.... ....

  73. d.... l....

did dave mason have anything to do with writing or influencing this tune? it has sections that sound like some of his compositions.

    d.... l....

    d.... l....

Dave Mason? Really? This song has Clapton written all over it...

    d.... l....

You could seriously do a mash up of Only You Know and I Know, and blend it right in

I'll say it again.  From 4:20 on this song has 24 distinct guitar solos by Eric and Duane on at least 8 separate tracks.  Just great playing and studio production.  I don't expect to hear anything comparable in my lifetime.

    r.... o....

@ray okoa I read that Duane doesn't play on this track, i don't think he does.

    r.... o....

@James Moran Man, I think you're right. Sorry. I just assumed Duane played on this track, too. I just listened again, and all guitars sound like Clapton. No distinctive Allman style apparent. I'm still overwhelmed by the cascading guitar tracks, though. Happy Independence Day!

    r.... o....

+ray okoa Yeah it is all Clapton on the first three tracks on the Layla album. From 4 to 14 I stopped trying to figure out who's who. I don't think they intended. Their guitars just went together perfectly. Especially on the title track.

    r.... o....

Duane did not play on the studio version of this song. This recording is Clapton playing both leads. this was/is pretty common knowledge for anyone who owned the album back in the day.

  77. H.... C....

One of the all time greats. The guitars are first class and so are the vocals. Who needs Stairway to Heaven? There, I said it.!

    H.... C....

Drew Little you know those subjective opinions on music. One opinion sounds crazy to someone else. What I find ridiculous, is when insults start flying over it. Thanks for not being one of those people. The better, when it comes to music, is a personal thing. Trying to force anyone to see it my way is just futile...

    H.... C....

John Elie My favorite advice is for those people to learn to play guitar. They will find amazement and wonder to far outweigh any ugly argument over anything as petty as "versus" debates. Save that for where it belongs: sci-fi and comic book discussions.
