Derek And The Dominos - I Looked Away Lyrics

She took my hand
And tried to make me understand
That she would always be there

But I looked away
And she ran away from me today
I'm such a lonely man

It came as no surprise to me
That she'd leave me in misery, yeah
It seemed like only yesterday
She made a vow that she'd never walk away

She took my hand
To try to make me understand
That she would always be there

But I looked away
And she ran away from me today
I'm such a lonely man

And if it seemed a sin
To love another man's woman, baby
I guess I'll keep on sinning
Loving her, Lord, to my very last day

But I looked away
And she ran away from me today
I'm such a lonely man

This is The BEST Clapton Song !

  3. G.... K....

Been passionately listening to R&R for many a second, minutes, hours, days, weeks, months, years and decades and I'd have to say that from beginning to end this is the single greatest STUDIO LP in the history of the genre...

You simply mix in unrequited love, utter heartache, smack, brilliant musicians and sheer emotional artistry/perfection is what is achieved...

It just doesn't get any better than this - my personal sole favourite deserted island STUDIO LP right here...

  4. D.... M....

    Thank you, and Happy Thanksgiving!

  5. S.... E....

Been listenin 2 this since 71! Should thank the Suck 4 that. Semper Fi.

Album's been with me since I was a senior in high school in 1970...a couple of vinyl LPs, an 8 track, a cassette and now several CDs. I have never EVER gotten tired of it. Still listen to it in the car at full blast. One of the things I'm going to do shortly after I retire is go to Macon's Rose Hill Cemetery and put a rose on Duane Allman's grave as the coda to Layla is softly drifting from the stereo in my car. Thanks for the songs of a lifetime Erick, Bobby, Carl Jim and especially to the fire in the diamond, Skydog.

  10. E.... H....

To think that these recording sessions at Criteria studios in North Miami beach were the braintrust of Tom Dowd and the Allman brothers chance flatbed tractor trailer concert where Tom Dowd took Eric Clapton and Bobby Whitlock to see this rising slide guitar country rhythm n blues upstart band solely due to the fact that Eric Clapton was amazed by Duane Allman's talent and Duane Allman's infatuation with Eric Clapton's history and raw ability is simply just an amazing chance meeting of two of music's greatest guitarists. The record,in my eye is the greatest recording of all time....bar none! Thank you to all involved in this historic musical Endeavour....Tom Dowd was taught by the best in the business the legendary Emet Ertragon and Jerry Wexler.....the rest is history.....

  11. C.... S....

Please check out Michael Nesmiths version of this song also.

  12. J.... A....

Clapton played many long, impressive solos in his career but I think the concise one at the end here tells it all. Haunting

  13. T.... B....

Hands down....One of my favorite songs of all time. Absolutely perfect in every way. And the fact it leads into Bell Bottom Blues. You don’t get a better one two then that.

    T.... B....

My absolute favorite as well. Such a great opening song for the greatest album. Just sublime.

  14. L.... L....

I walked away...48 years ago. Eric's been with me the whole time. As I told one boyfriend "think of me, when you here E.C.". Still walking

  15. b.... ....

as far as I can tell, this song was never performed live by D&D - a true shame. I'd love to be wrong and find out otherwise...

  16. G.... H....

This is my favorite song next to Bell Bottom and Layla ....the emotion ..and notice how much it almost sounds like Duane is on it ...but he is not !!!

  17. C.... ....

    The perfect album!

  18. W.... A....

    Best Album...Fuck’n EVER⚫️

    W.... A....

    Duh⚫️

  19. W.... A....

I met Jim Gordon...I visited with him...I supervised him...He was in D Quad, Men’s Colony, San Luis Obispo, California...I feel privileged....He was so very sick, physically, & especially mentally....It’s so sad how this Artist ended up....R.I.P.

    W.... A....

    But he ain't dead already.

  20. L.... F....

    classic

  21. S.... M....

A song very much underappreciated in the context of the praise lavished on much of the rest of the album, but a freaking gem!

  22. P.... F....

All the guitars on this song are Clapton . Carl Radle played bass .

  23. C.... ....

You can tell these guys were peakin' together- an amazing moment in rock history.

  24. N.... D....

Music for siempre and para siempre 👌

  25. P.... L....

Such a killer rhythm guitar tone especially the way he finishes each verse on the last two cords. Such a great song on so many levels.

  26. H.... W....

    She took my hand
And tried to make me understand
That she would always be there

    But I looked away
And she ran away from me today,
    I'm such a lonely man.

It came as no surprise to me
That she'd leave me in misery.
    It seemed like only yesterday
She made a vow that she'd never walk away.

    She took my hand
And tried to make me understand
That she would always be there

    But I looked away
And she ran away from me today,
    I'm such a lonely man.

And if it seemed a sin

I guess I'll keep on sinning
Loving her, Lord, till my very last day.

    Hans Wigman thank you

  27. M.... B....

This song speaks to me on so many levels.

  28. A.... J....

    Sweet memories

  29. m.... m....

just about the best song, one of my all time favorites, really !!!!!!

  30. D.... G....

I love to play this song over and over and over. It’s like the beginning of a great memory. ❤️

    D.... G....

    all good tracks,

  31. B.... A....

EC said in his autobiography that Carl Radle and Jim Gordon were the finest rhythm section he ever worked with. This song shows you why.I remember listening to this record for the first time and being surprised how musical this was compared to a lot of what was out there. I wish Clapton had kept this band for at least another couple of albums. Blind Faith was great but Clapton and Bobby Whitlock were amazing together. And then Skydog shows up....

  32. J.... A....

If you're not in love with this song then you're missing something. Ok, we'll let you catch up.

  33. M.... ....

this was when Clapton was at his best with the incredible duane
credits should mostly go on this album to duane

    M.... ....

I disagree on giving most credit to Duane. He is fantastic on this album, but he does not play on this song, keep on growing, and Bell bottom blues. Clapton killed it on guitar in those three songs. Duane shines as an outstanding slide guitar player on this album, but Clapton is the dominant guitar player. Key to the Highway is the best example. Duane has two long slide killer solos on that song, but Clapton's 5 solos with his pull down technique for bending the strings are the heart of that song. Duane's greatest contribution to Layla is that he pushed Clapton to do his best guitar playing during this era of his career.

    M.... ....

    Ur smoking crack

    M.... ....

Duane isn't even on this song

  34. K.... B....

this entire album ....dreadful, ...all copies should be burned.

seriously, amazing underrated opener.... would love to hear cats like the Black Crowes, et al cover it...

  35. A.... J....

I get surprised when i hear this song at Mean Streets, what a song, what a movie!

    A.... J....

    adrian.. I agree

  36. M.... G....

Every new car that I put on the road has this song playing.  " And she ran away from me today"....in the perfect car, NOT a problem!

  37. j.... b....

    Ghosts!!!!!!

  38. m.... b....

why she gotta run away......just 'cause he looked away...
she made a vow..DOG..,chimy chrome soundin' at 2;25 ..,both guitar dogs howlin'
    'bout dat..

  39. J.... B....

I can hear Eric's long scale Strat doin' what only a Strat can do...

  40. R.... E....

    Skydawg & Slowhand

    R.... E....

actually Duane is not on I looked away, Bell bottom blues and keep on growing as he was not a part of the sessions yet. Infact all of this is Clapton

  41. J.... A....

Yep that's Eric singing. And playing those haunted solos

  42. W.... U....

I've sensed a Billy Joel vibe in this, just the progression and harmony I guess

  43. J.... A....

What version did you take this song from? Sounds a little different from the CD 20th anniversary version I have (the Boxset one)

  44. J.... B....

Is that Eric singing on this cut?

    J.... B....

    No it's Mel Torme

    J.... B....

Ha ha... thanks Rev & Michel ...and his singing in his 70's is better than ever.

    J.... B....

Along with Bobby Whitlock -- who was much the stronger vocalist of the two. Cheers!

  45. L.... M....

    Best song on the record

    L.... M....

I like it as much as any.

    L.... M....

I'm with you, love this song very under rated.

  46. l.... ....

Of all the music I loved as a teenager, this stuff holds up the best.

  47. j.... ....

    his lost classic.

  48. A.... F....

    Super Cool song

  49. M.... C....

First song on the album: "To love another man's woman."

    M.... C....

That was basically the motif and reason behind this whole album

    M.... C....

He wasn't exactly subtle about it

  50. j.... ....

    Best song on the album!

    j.... ....

    Cindy D'Adamo I second that

    j.... ....

    My all time favorite song...

  51. A.... B....

you know, and when you really think about ...... wow that couldve been better than it was..... but still not that decent or good

  52. C.... E....

long time between this and Behind the Sun

  53. R.... W....

You know what the Queen said? If I had balls, I'd be King.

    R.... W....

i got no prize for you, but you got it

    R.... W....

+Robert Wright Fucking Mean Streets. Good call!

    R.... W....

I always thunked it wuz: Balls said the queen, had 2 I'd be king...(?)

    R.... W....

The queen said 'I'd love to rim that queen's bleached arsehole'.

    R.... W....

The King laughed not because he wanted to because he had 2.

  54. A.... L....

    Thank you!!!

  55. e.... l....

Thanks for posting these cuts from one of the best albums ever made...IMHO!

  56. J.... S....

music to slide through temporal portals to while cruising to jupiter (or walmart)

  57. R.... B....

This is one of my favourite songs on the album. Although that is akin to trying to choose a favourite child. The whole album is an absolute gem. The whole thing is incredible

    R.... B....

Rob Blair I couldn’t agree more.

    R.... B....

    Best album.of all time

    R.... B....

IMO, unquestionably one of the greatest albums of all time!

    R.... B....

This song's definitely not appreciated enough. In truth, Bobby Whitlock's importance to the album is still WAY overshadowed by Eric and Duane's. It really attains iconic status as much because of his songwriting (and singing) contribution as theirs.

  58. B.... ....

    Another Patty Boyd inspired classic.

    B.... ....

+BIRISHPM basically the entire album is inspired by her I think lol but it is a great song and very underated. Bobby Whitlock adds vocals that make it better I think

    B.... ....

    @Peter F. Absolutely, agree 100 percent!

    B.... ....

Practically every track on this album is dude

  59. c.... ....

Favorite song on a great album.

  60. R.... H....

    J.... v....

    Actually they do, I'm 19 y.o.

  62. M.... C....

    til my very last day....

  63. D.... S....

Such finely crafted music - I can't believe only two songs ever made it to the radio.  Maybe I'm really surprised at myself for missing this gem of an album over 40 years later.

  64. L.... L....

OMG, this brings back so many memories....I saw MoonAlice the other night and they did this song excellently!!!  I cannot stop singing it now!  Happy Mother's Day all you mothers!!!

  65. k.... ....

got this as a young teen(when it came out).a classic album..been listening to it ever since...

  66. J.... M....

Exprss Encyclpd, UK 1977).

  67. l.... ....

    Awesome album.
