Denver, John - The Love Of Common People Lyrics

Living on free food tickets. Water in the milk from the hole in the roof
where the rain came through, what can we do? Mmm.
Tears from your baby sister, crying 'cause she doesn't have a dress
Without a patch for the party to go, oh but you know she'll get by,
Because she's living in the love of the common people, smiles from the heart of a family man.
Daddy's gonna buy you a dream to cling to,
Mommy's gonna love you just as much as she can, and she can.

It's a good thing you don't have bus-fare, it would fall through the hole in your pocket
And you'd lose it in the snow on the ground, walking to the town to find a job.
Trying to keep your hands warm, but the hole in your shoe lets the snow come through
and it chills to the bone. Boy you better go home where it's warm.
And you can live in the love of the common people, smiles from the heart of a family man.
Daddy's gonna buy you a dream to cling to,
Mommy's gonna love you just as much as she can, and she can.

Living on dreams ain't easy, but the closer the knit, the tighter the fit
and the chills stay away, you take them in stride, family pride.
You know, faith is your foundation, with a whole lot of love
and a warm conversation and many a prayer, making you strong where you belong.
Living in the love of the common people, smiles from the heart of a family man.
Daddy's gonna buy you a dream to cling to,
Mommy's gonna love you just as much as she can, and she can.
Living in the love of the common people, smiles from the heart of a family man.
Daddy's gonna buy you a dream to cling to,
Mommy's gonna love you just as much as she can, and she can.

Still missing John Denver...another great song.

  2. G.... P....

Huge JD fan but Paul Young did a better version

  3. R.... R....

Paul Young's version is better, at least according to my taste and nostalgia.

    R.... R....

    agreed. this is painful

  4. p.... ....

i'm sorry, but i've been listening to version after version, and they were all way better.
    Love John though

  5. I.... D....

John Denver was a musical genius.

  6. J.... K....

    Love this song!

  7. h.... ....

Saw John involved in an interview regarding the future of our earth and a kid of about 14 said, 'But I'm just one voice' and John replied with, 'Oh but what an important voice' He expanded on the importance of youth'. Anyway, it impressed me and I have always admired the man for being able to paint pictures with his words. Would have loved to have met him.

Thanks for this!! Great old song of his, good memories.

  10. J.... ....

Thanks very much. Since JD didnt' write it, RCA hasn't seen fit to include it in any other collections. (Same thing with Boy From The Country).

  11. t.... ....

@TheLouise24 The Everly Brothers and Wayne Newton each had very good versions of this, both from 1967. The Everly version is better, and is on youtube.....

  12. S.... D....

I had this album while flying in Viet Nam in '69 and '70......Basically gave it away....wish I had it now

  13. D.... D....

John Denver was a true Human Being and boy could he entertain us!

  14. T.... ....

This is a great version, but the best one is from the Gosdin Brothers; Vern's baritone voice is beautiful.

    T.... ....

Ol' Waylon did a pretty good version as well! I have to say, given the lyrics, that versions by Paul Young and MANY others that were significantly faster detracted from the power of the lyrics, in my opinion.

But I am just an old fart!

  15. C.... G....

    Tempo too slow.

  16. D.... M....

@DragonLowriders - yes, go ahead and upload "Circus." Would appreciate it.

  17. f.... ....

I think this is the best version of this song ever. He just feels every word as he sings it, incredible!

    f.... ....

    I agree....love it
