Denver, John - Tenderly Calling Lyrics

Home, come on home, ye who are weary, come home.
Softly and tenderly calling, home, come on home.

Sometimes when I'm feeling lonesome, and no one on earth seems to care,
I'm all by myself in the darkness with no one and nothing to share.
Just when it feels like it's hopeless and I'll never make it alone,
I hear the voices of angels tenderly calling me home,

Home, come on home, ye who are weary, come home.
Softly and tenderly calling, home, come on home.

I try to keep it together, I never let on that I'm scared.
Still sometimes I fall to pieces, scatter and lost everywhere.
Just when it feels like there's no one to mend all my broken down dreams,
I hear a voice deep inside me tenderly calling to me.

Home, come on home, ye who are weary, come home.
Softly and tenderly calling, home, come on home.

So don't be afraid of the darkness and don't run away from the storm.
Stand up and face your reflection, the feelings you try to ignore.
After the tempest is over, you've let yourself come on through.
You'll hear a voice in the silence tenderly calling to you.

Home, come on home, ye who are weary, come home.
Softly and tenderly calling, home, come on home.

Not even one mention of the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, in a song about heaven? Sad. John Denver had a great voice, but there isn't any record of the man being born again. He knows better now.

Always liked John, but this is just a rip off of the Christian song Softly and Tenderly, but leaving out God and the name of Jesus.

    b.... ....

    That is true.

  37. T.... ....

I think John was trying to find the truth, apparently he was not a believer of Jesus, I think God took him early because in his songs he saw true feelings of truths and that way he brought him to him in the end as it was his only Salvation on that plane!
And for the record Jesus is God despite of what the masons believe!

I always like to post a link to this for the idiots who claim John was a Satan worshipper. He had a deep and abiding love for God, even if he didn't dig orthodox religion. He said his greatest faith was in his Father in Heaven. God Bless you John, you're with Jesus now.

I grew up in churches that sang this song, and although everyone have their own belief about Christianity, I'm so glad he recorded this gospel song. I really believe John is a very spiritual man.

    D.... P....

@Dianna P. Wood This was the theme song to the movie "A Trip To Bountiful" in which lead actress Geraldine Page won an Academy Award for Best Actress!!! The song in the movie is sung by a woman!!! Denver heard the song and recorded it. Another song the Denver heard, liked and recorded was "City Of New Orleans" which Arlo Guthrie heard and recorded. Denver song sold nothing - Guthries sold 5 million copies - and they are almost exactly the same!!!!!!!!! Go figure!!!!!!!!

    D.... P....

@Jeff Schwartz Actually John rewrote the hymn, "Softly and Tenderly Jesus is Calling" with this song. The lyrics are different but both are lovely.

    D.... P....

There is only one true Christianity though. Everyone has their belief but there is only one truth only one reality which can be found in the Bible itself. If your Christianity doesn't match up then it isn't the true one.

    D.... P....

Thank you for commenting. Jesus is the way, the truth and the life.

    D.... P....

Yep! No one comes to the Father but by Him. It's the only way and it isn't mean to say so it's mean to not say so and let someone just keep going the wrong way down to a deadly end.

  58. V.... L....

I never knew.  I believe as John did...I do not believe in religions...I believe in Jesus and know there is a God....a higher power

    V.... L....

@Vicki Larson  Jesus is who we celebrate this weekend.

    V.... L....

@Vicki Larson I think that is called being spiritual but not religious. Well, if you look at it completely honest - Jesus was spiritual - but not religious!!!!!!! You're in good company!!!!!!!!

I have in the past wonder if John could ever do any gospel songs/albums... I can only wish there were more.
One thing though is we need to find ways to witness to those who don't think the church is the answer when all we can do is sing a song that nudges them to find that answer in Christ.

    S.... S....

    Thank you for your comment.

    S.... S....

John Denver was not a religious man - he said this MANY times!!!  He said he did believe in God - as well as Jesus - just not any specific version of any specific church - he said he was spiritual - not religious!!!!! He also said his music was NOT Country/Western - it was simply Western!!!!
He was one of the lucky ones - he was born with a "pitch perfect" voice - he couldn't hit a sour note if he tried!!  (You cannot develop a pitch perfect voice - you are either born with one or you will never have one!!!  And if you are born with one - you can only put a shine on it!!!  A "pitch perfect" voice is when your mouth, teeth, throat, lungs, tongue and voice box are all perfectly aligned - and they make a dentist VERY nervous - one small mistake and it is gone forever!!!!!!!!!;-)
John Denver once turned an RCA studio piano using only his voice!!!!  Later that day - it was tuned by the RCA normal professional piano tuner - with an oscilicope and an expensive set of tuning forks - and every note on the piano was perfectly tuned!!!  "Pitch perfect" voices are extremely rare - about 1 person in every 250,000,000 people world wide have a "pitch perfect" voice - and not all people that have "pitch perfect" voices are singers!!!  "Pitch perfect" voices draw the human ear to the voice - we humans simply love to hear a pitch perfect voice talk or sing (we ALWAYS listen - as we are drawn to the voice) - Elvis Presley, Dean Martin, Bing Crosby and Beverly Sills also had pitch perfect voices!!!!  But be very careful - Adolph Hitler had a pitch perfect voice  - and so does Justin Beiber - so he's gonna be around for a while!!!!!

As I said as the beginning comment to the huge response to the posting of "Tenderly Calling", this song appeals to many people of differing beliefs. I'm also glad that this song provides comfort to many folks, but the fact that the writer, Jan Garrett, takes a Christian song and takes out Jesus, means that this song is not particularly a Christian song. The voice inside us may be God, but it also may be the spark of the moral and spiritual self that we have developed within us. I am an agnostic, but I want this song to be sung at my funeral, whereas I would not be comfortable with "Softly and Tenderly, Jesus Is Calling."

    L.... R....

I'm a particular Christian, so Jesus will be calling me home.  I'm also glad it's a comfort for you as an agnostic.

    L.... R....

@beanscot Thanks. I wish you the best.

    L.... R....

It is also the theme song to the movie "A Trip To Bountiful"!!!!!

    L.... R....

@Earthlinked The theme song was actually "Softly and Tenderly Jesus Is Calling" a hymn by Will L. Thompson, published in 1880.  The two songs are much alike.  Thank you for commenting.

  64. M.... S....

I just had this song played at my husband's funeral on Dec. 31, 2013. Perfect. My husband was a retired Baptist minister. Not a dry eye in the church.

This is very similar to a song called Softly, Tenderly Jesus is Calling. That song can be heard at the beginning of the movie called Trip to Bountiful. Both beautiful songs with a timeless message....

  80. J.... F....

Some Baptist churches here in Australia did a similar thing.
    They were very much wrong.
Yes they usually are. Had a Baptist guy recently ask me if I believed that John was a satanist!! So there is still some sort of false belief system there.

f arzilli...I have to agree with you. I have listened to his music since 1971, to many of the same songs / cd's over and over. But there are days when the spirituality woven into his songs jumps out a bit more strongly than in the past when I heard the same song...just an amazing artist and amazing songs!

Sometimes it seems to me that songs are just there in the air, created directly by God and in the wait for someone capable of deciphering it. This is in my opinion the case of all John Denver's enlightened music: a gift of God to His sons through the voice of one of His Angels.
