Denver, John - Shipmates And Cheyenne Lyrics
Shipmates and cheyenne, raindrops and crying haunt the dreams of an old, old man.
Candles and church bells, laughter and farewells revolve in his thoughts like the wind.
Stallions and blizzards, steelies and lizards drift in the meadows of time.
No sense of progression, of age and direction, no meter, no form, no rhyme.
I'll hold me one, just one rising sun long after daylight is gone.
Kingdoms and cupboards, losers and lovers and evenings of blackberry wine.
Falling like sand, the memory of hands and kisses, and whispers and sighs.
I'll hold me one, just one rising sun long after daylight is gone.
I'll hold me one, one more rising sun till my daylight and darkness is done.

Denver, John Shipmates And Cheyenne Comments
His yodeling beginning at 2:45 is amazing. Nostalgia and tear inducing depending on your mood and what memories come to mind.
I still have the vinyl album of this recording in my collection. Listened to it many times and to this day, still haven't seen any pop artist with the talent and vision that John Denver possessed. This song, "Shipmates and Cheyenne" is purely vintage/classic John Denver. RIP brother and so sorry you left us too soon.
Thank you, John Denver, for your beautiful songs and perfect voice
Awesome song......beautiful voice...…….John Denver, RIP......Miss you sooo.
I was 12 when this album came out in 1975 . I still have it. I followed John’s career from beginning to end. His music was so soothing to me and I listened to it every night at bedtime on an old cassette tape I had made with a cheap little tape recorder. I’ll never forget those days of my young youth living beside the Pomona Freeway in Southern California. John Denver is still one of the top 5 singers that ever lived . I used to fantasize about meeting him and shaking his hand and of course now that will never happen. I still find it difficult to believe he’s gone.
Richard I echo your statements did the same at that age and still listen his songs today thanks to youtube. Praying for you guys about the wildfires.
Shipmates and Cheyenne
John Denver
Album: Windsong
Shipmates and Cheyenne, raindrops and cryin'
Haunt the dreams of an old, old man
Candles and church bells, laughter and farewells
Revolve in his thoughts like a wind
Stallions and blizzards, steelies and lizards
Adrift in the meadows of time
No sense of progression, of age or direction
No meter, no form, no rhyme
I'll hold me one
Just one rising sun
Long after daylight is gone
I'll hold me one
One more rising sun
Till my daylight and darkness is done
Kingdoms and cupboards, losers and lovers
And evenings of blackberry wine
Falling like sand, the memory of hands
And kisses, and whispers and sighs
I'll hold me one
Just one rising sun
Till long after daylight is gone
I'll hold me one
One more rising sun
Till my daylight and darkness is done
I'll hold me one
One more rising sun
Till my daylight and darkness is done

The more I listen to the music of my youth from the mid '70s the more I discover them all over again from another point of view on THIS end of life. Thank you for posting!

What an absolute poet, John and Joe Henry.
