Denver, John - River Lyrics

River, there are no stars in the city. Here, there is no telephone in the trees.
Beautiful days fall on the water, and all I can do is write you a letter.
River, it's cold here in the morning. Later, I can see it in your eyes.
Wild and white, we follow the canyons. Quiet at night, we stare at the sky.
Leaving you now will never change me. Running away will change the view.
All I can see is the highway.

River, you will carry me through the fire. Maybe you'll drown me in your arms.
But if I die like that, it won't be like dying. When I rise again, the ashes are mine.

Leaving you now will never change me. Running away will change the view.
All I can see is the highway. All I can see is you.

I got to see Renee Armand sing this last night. It was beautiful!

...an alcoholic according to Annie, which causes ups and downs and mood swings. Trying to fulfill the demands for new material causes all sorts of issues within the artist, and even though John appears so happy in his videos, it winds up becoming a job of sorts at some point. Perhaps an ill-timed comment by Annie produces a trigger that manifests itself in a chainsaw or other show of outrage. Thankfully, we have a happy John on the internet bringing all of us the most joyfilled music we can hear

The chain saw was because Annie cut down Johns fav trees while he was away.So he cut the bed up.

Read John's book, and get the story from him.

The entertainment and music industries are very brutal on relationships, which cause all sorts of difficulties within a person. John started his career very early in life, so we can't know if his challenges would have continued on later in life, but the huge challenges in the music industry can cause much emotional madness. It's not an easy field to go in despite the glee that performers exude. Many turn to alcohol and drugs to get away from the demands which cause problems at home. John was...

Actually, he didn't write this. It was by Renee Armand. But his singing does convey sadness, and came at a time when he was preparing for divorce. Lots went on in their marriage and it was very difficult at times. Music and entertainment is a tough business for relationships.

This is a good song but why is he so sad. Guess he was getting ready to breakup with Annie. Very foolish women!

wow!!! John's best songs were being put together just before he died...Yellowstone, Comming Home, Wandering Soul, Healing Time, and very few people know of them, even his biggest fans....how ironic. His greatest longing of getting back on the top of the charts was just within his reach

That is a great album. It's sad that several of his best recordings were not released while he was alive.

Thanks so much for your sentiments! Rivers are just one of the things that nature has to offer, and is perfectly associated with JD.
