Denver, John - On The Wings Of An Eagle Lyrics

Oh, my home is in the mountains, I am free, I am free.
I am one with wind and eagles, I am free. Given wings to sail in gracefulness, the sky, the sky.
Given a voice to sing in breathlessness, I find that I can fly, fly away.

I've been a long time on the highway, I've been a long time on the run.
And it gets to be like chaos when I'm so long away from home.
And sometimes it's just to much to bare and I hide behind my eyes.
I can picture friendly faces and I can dream of friendly skies.
And I guess that I'm a lucky one for the truth of what I know.
For my heart had not denied me and I have somewhere to go.
I shall never be a prisoner of steel and glass and stone.
If I leave, I will return again to my Rocky Mountain home.

Oh, my home is in the mountains, I am free, I am free.
I am one with wind and eagles, I am free. Given wings to sail in gracefulness, the sky, the sky.
Given a voice to sing in breathlessness, I find that I can fly, fly away.

In the hands of my father, in the light of the sunshine. On the wings of an eagle, I'm flying again.
I'm flying again, I'm flying again, I'm flying again, I'm flying again.

Thanks for sharing, very touching! This is a very lovely song and not well known.

We used this song to say goodbye to my grandfather. John Denver was played during his viewing and final goodbyes, but I will never forget this song.

I don't know crap about how to load a video response but John Denver has been an inspiration to me since I was a kid (and we're talkin decades now) so the video response (My Video) is a song i wrote and recorded while driving to Alaska with my daughter inspired by songs by Mr John Denver! I wish i was talented as him! Anyway - enjoy (or hate it - it's all good!!) No record companies, contracts, agents, etc - just music! Take care all!!

  20. j.... ....

I agree, it's very beautiful. And I had never heard this song before this CD came out in 1998.

Very Beautiful song, even though am a fan of JD,never heard this song..Great

  22. J.... D....

Lol, a year later & I'm still looking for that song. They used to play it on radio late 70's- and it sounded like John Denver. But no, the version I'm speaking of is NOT by James Rogers though it has the same lyrics. Ironic that the radio station had the song, but its evidently not available elsewhere. ♫ Fly eagle fly... wont you spread your freedom wings across the sky... don't let 'em bring you down...they'll chain you to the ground...♫

@quintanazuz You're welcome. Thanks to John Denver as well. I had never heard of this song either when the CD came out in 1998. I had heard it was supposed to be released in 1980 right after the "JD" album, but RCA scrapped it in favor of that Country album that he ultimately did instead.

  24. T.... ....

Does any one know the song that was at the end of the Tribute Show after his death. They interviewed his family and friends was this the song?

    T.... ....

The one I remember was As the First Snows Fell on Colorado by Buddy Renfro.  That was the very tribute show at the Wheeler Opera House.  Then they played This Old Guitar, John singing.  Wasn't a dry eye in the place.

  25. j.... ....

@arshad98 Yeah, that exchange from recyclecongress was from a year ago I just noticed. And the song you referenced indeed sung by James Rogers. Nice clear voice! Take care.

  26. a.... ....

@jrssjdca I do understand that this song you posted is by JD but recyclecongress asked about Fly Eagle Fly and where he could find it, he gave the lyrics "Fly eagle fly.... wont you spread your freedom wings across the sky..... don't let 'em bring you down, they'll chain you to the ground" so that song was sung my James Rogers :) Peace

  27. j.... ....

@arshad98 Well this version is by JD. I'm a lifelong fan of his and know that for fact. I checked out "Fly Eagle Fly" and it's different than this one and James Rogers is a country singer. It's more of a patriotic theme, whereas this song is a expression of John's love for being free using flying as a metaphor. The song is attributed to "unknown" on the CD. John had recorded an album in 1980ish with this song as part of the collection, but RCA opted for "Some Days Are Diamonds" instead.

  28. a.... ....

@recyclecongress ok I just saw this and with a little Google search I found your song. I am not sure if it was sung by JD or not, I don't think it was, but it was sung by James Rogers I think in 1973. I tried to post the link here but it doesn't work, please search for FLY EAGLE FLY...My Tribute to American Eagles

  29. i.... ....

I found this song on the Forever John album a couple of years after he left us.

Being an avid follower, I could not believe the words or that I had not found it earlier.

    Far out!!

@blindsaquib BACK IN 1950 , Drove an old V8, and when the engine started to (go?) we got out and pushed it amile. We didnt' know who we were, we didn't know what we did, we were just ON THE ROAD.
It's "on the Road " from the album "Back home again" with John and annie on the cover
    hope that helps!

  31. R.... D....

Fly Eagle, Fly! by James Rogers was adopted by Tennessee as a U.S. bicentennial song in 1976.

    The CHORUS is:

And I said, Fly Eagle, Fly!
    Go spread your freedom wings across the sky;
Don't let 'em bring you down, they'll chain you to the ground.
You gotta be strong to travel alone in the sky.
So Fly Eagle Fly! So Fly mighty Eagle fly!

  32. M.... J....

When I start listening to John Denver music I just can't stop it is so relaxing.. I just love it

  33. b.... ....

there's a song that begins like "back in 1958..." ? can any body help? thanks a lot in advance...

  34. P.... ....

I first heard this song when the cd came out not too long after we lost John, it really hit home, because he did say on his last nature documentary that when he comes back he wants to be an eagle. This is a great song, and one of the reasons i'm a proud long time John Denver fan :) Thanks so much for all the videos, and keeping John's music alive! :)

  35. j.... ....

@canals22 You're welcome, glad to know! I first heard it on that 1998 CD, and it was emotional indeed.

  36. J.... P....

    @jrssjdca Found it ! Many thanks !!
First time I hear that in 25 years... emotional...

  37. j.... ....

@recyclecongress The eagle and mountains were centric to his songwriting and persona. The lyrics you speak of are unknown to me, though typical of what he could or might have written. There was a CD released in 1998 called "Forever John" which contained a number of never released material, but this was not one of them. Maybe someone will know of the song you speak of.

  38. j.... ....

@canals22 Yes, that was on the Some Days Are Diamonds album from 1980. There's not much information on it though. There's a YouTube upload on it.

  39. J.... D....

I'm still looking for his song (from 70's?) about an Eagle. The lyrics go: "Fly eagle fly.... wont you spread your freedom wings across the sky..... don't let 'em bring you down, they'll chain you to the ground....." I dont even know the name of song- he has so many eagle songs.

  40. J.... P....

any one knows a song by John that talks about wilf flowers in a mason jar ?
    Thanks.

    J.... P....

Jorge Picabea “Wild Flowers in a Mason Jar” is on the “Some Days are Diamonds” album

Wings of an Eagle written by Russel Morris

Well I'm looking out on an overcast sky in the morning
I can hear the warning as it calls to you
As the birds migrate and the wind is raised
    I see the eagle soaring
Although I'm just a pawn in nature's game like you
Wah hoo, wah hoo hoo hoo, wah hoo ...

    [Chorus]
On the wings of an eagle I find myself lifted through the skies
Lifted up above the world to sing
On the wings of an eagle I find myself lifted through the skies
Lifted up above the world to see
Can you see me? Can you see me?

As the days roll on and the nights get long
    The changing of the seasons
And the falling autumn leaves they bring me down
They bring me down, they bring me down

    [Instrumental]

Do you lose your way in the middle of the day
Do you see your brother crawling?
And all the while he's calling out for help from you
Wah hoo, wah hoo hoo hoo, wah hoo ...

On the wings of an eagle I find myself lifted through the skies
Lifted up above the world to sing
On the wings of an eagle I find myself lifted through the skies
Lifted up above the world to see

Can you see me? Can you see me?
Can you see me? Can you see me?

Can you see me? Can you see me?
Can you see me? Can you see me?

Can you see me? Can you see me?
Can you see me? Can you see me?

  45. j.... ....

Good for you and thanks, glad to post it for you! It's not a well known JD song. But glad you found it here.

  46. j.... ....

You're most welcome! Thanks for watching.

  47. j.... ....

Thanks for your comments! And that was quick, you never heard of John Denver and now he's made an impression on you. Good for you. Do check out the other videos on YouTube. There's a LOT more where this came from. He has so much material that you can easily spend hours listening to him.

  49. M.... G....

    He was so awesome!

  50. j.... ....

Thanks for your comment, I think there are lots of people who would share that sentiment. And I agree that it is a cool song.

  51. j.... ....

Thanks Puck!! I think this song is ingenious in how it changes theme, then changes back again to a slower variation of the first one. Kind of like in waltzlike fashion. And his imagery is typical. He was gifted with his lyrical abilities. I agree with you...he had a ton of talent. I also agree that it's mind boggling. When I first heard this, I loved the yodeling part.

  52. j.... ....

Thanks for your comment. While it's nice to have changing images to represent a theme, I agree that a single picture (especially one like this) presents something different. A great word...meditation. And it does have that effect. I found it refreshing, "neat", touching, etc., that the production chose to use photos of John from the 70s. These I hadn't seen before when I purchased the CD.

  53. M.... .....

Great choice in presentation. The single picture makes me concentrate on John Denver, his life, and what his music has mint to me through the years. It is a great song for meditation.
