Hmm, I have this song on a cd, but it's a lot faster, and the bit in the middle about living on a mountain kind of slurs together and gets louder- I think it has more punch that way but I also like hearing his original version. Maybe it's from one of the many Best of John Denver cd's?

John was the quiet, optimistic, smiling side of a generation. A man who gentle songs that made us all happy. These songs transport me to another time and place. I miss you, as do you, and I'm comforted that he left us this fantastic body of work. I saw him with my daughter on his last tour. We sang along to all the songs -- even the Mitchell Trio work -- and made fun of the fools in front of us that couldn't find the energy to stand up for "Thank God I'm a Country Boy." He died doing what he wanted to do. Good for him! A few weeks ago, a musician friend and I were talking and found that we'd learned the songs from the same album.

Thank you for posting this. The slide show reminds me of one of John's concerts. You had to love the pictures and movies that were playing behind him. A gentle man, talented and troubled. He's still alive in my life and I'll bet he's there for you, too.

I was 17 years old... I rode horses for the Summer as a Tour Guide. It was the best, most memorable summer of my life. THIS WAS MY THEME SONG!
It was at Lake Louise, Alberta. It was like living a fantasy... the BEST Kind! At the end of the Summer Harry and a couple of the cowboys tried to talk me into heading to Australia to ride the circuit with them... I was so tempted, but I had to return for Grade 12. When I got back to the city, I had a new car (1965 Olds 98), more Memories than I thought possible and I had to learn how to be a Hippy again (& regrow my hair). The Year was 1974.
 Everytime I hear this song... the memories rush in faster than my mind can keep up with.... imagine 5am riding bareback on a horse from night pasture, usually hungover with the Rocky Mountain Mists filling my lungs and feeling every movement of this incredibly beautiful animal beneath me.
The cowboys never treated me like the greenhorn that I was... they taught me how to trick-ride, they showed me how to fully enjoy life and I will never forget them. Only one leading hand treated me badly... but he wasn't a cowboy... he was another city boy... and an absolute snob (he was going back to University to be a Doctor).
John Denver (& this song in particular) inspired me to learn how to play guitar... which led me to start composing my own tunes. I often wonder how my life had been different if I had joined them to ride the rodeo circuit.

That was Mistikay I believe. She put together a very nice slideshow involving Stallion of the Cimarron. John would have loved it, I agree.

I remember hearing my first one. It was Eagles and Horses, someone had put it to clips from Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron and I love that film. It wouldn't surprise me if the script writers had been inspired by that song. I am sure he would have loved the movie.

I agree completely on all accounts. He had that essence that we'll never see again. Musical looks, style, guitar, and all that went on in between the ears from a musical standpoint.

There are many singer/songwriters that I like and several that admire, but the only one that I can say that I have the utmost respect and admiration for is John Denver. His music, the beautiful songs he wrote and sang with all his heart and his passion for the environment set him apart from everyone else. I am still deeply moved by his Wildlife Concert recorded just a couple of years before his untimely passing. RIP John, you were loved by many

I'm not a cowboy, real or imagined, but it has that "cowboy" feel to it. John referred to himself as a "Western" singer/songwriter, and I think this song conveys that moniker.

I agree. Better collection of songs, and more mature songwriting although his "Back Home Again" album was the best in terms of sales. That was probably due to his exploding popularity on the heels of his GH album.

I like John Denvers music - this song is epic

I love those too. I'm in between really enjoying his earlier versions with their 70s simplicity, and his "mature" years when technology was vastly improved and his voice was far richer. I think his guitar work was tighter in his earlier years, but better sounding in the later years. I love those songs you mentioned as well. Rocky Mountain High is a big favorite of mine. But there are so many favorites I agree. And you're welcome for the upload! :-)

Denver wrote 3 songs using the nme Jessie - and named his only bilogical child Jessie!!!! Some say when he was young, he loved a girl named Jessie - some say he simply liked the name!!!!

@vuurwerkisleuk That's a lot of peoples' favorite song. Probably his #1 song as far as popularity and general "well knowness". I'd venture to guess that 80% of the world's population is familiar with it. There's a very short video of it by Korean musicians performing it on the shores of Singapore or some location like that. Interesting that John gets credit for writing it, when he only wrote the bridge. But he became far more well known than Bill Danoff who wrote most of it.
