Denver, John - Children Of The Universe Lyrics

A heritage of vision was given to us all to smell the rose's fragrance, to hear the songbird's call.
To watch the distant moonlight fill the coming of the tides,
to understand that life is more than always choosing sides.

And some have seen what can be seen of sailing ships and kings.
And some are given feet of clay and some are given wings.
Some must struggle just to breathe, some have a golden spoon.
And some will never leave the nest while some walk on the moon.

And don't you know the life that lives within the silent hills
is just as rich and beautiful and just as unfulfilled.
As man with all his intellect, his reason and his choice,
oh, who's to say the nightingale has any less a voice.

The silver dolphins twist and dance and sing to one another,
the cosmic ocean knows no bounds for all that live are brothers.
The whippoorwill, the grizzly bear, the elephant, the whale,
all children of the universe, all weavers of the tale.

So palomino, lie back down and dream yourself to sleep.
The hawk flies with the morning dove, the lion with the sheep.
As far away as you may go, we'll never be apart.
It's in your dreams that you will know the seasons of the heart.

JD is the voice for nature, the voice for peace, the voice of tender souls, hurting souls, loving souls. For the past week, I have woken from my sleep every morning with this beautiful song in my dream. A song that reminds me that each of us is an important ingredient in one world, inside one universe. It is up to us to be loving sharing caretakers of our world, and all who live within it.... whether now, in past, or future generations. We are one. We are timeless. What hurts one, hurts us all. An act of selfless love, loves all.

This is also on Seasons of the Heart Album, my favorite by JD!

Absolutely amazing song. One of the best ever written.

I have to agree! John's music ran the gamut from simple fun songs, to those that penetrate, either on a romantic level, or ones that make you think and absorb like this one. Joe has a marvelous way of writing, and of course John matched his incredible prose and poetry with music that just overwhelms. If you have the album, check out the inner sleeve liner note from "I Want To Live" and just appreciate the breathtaking writing of Joe.

This is so beautiful, I don't know what to say. I know that we all experience John's  God-given talent in our own special way. For me it always feels like that "once in a lifetime" experience with each and every one of his songs. I have known him for many years, but now it seems that I have also "evolved" into John's deeper and more mature voice. God sends along such a voice maybe once in ten lifetimes. I can hardly believe that I am fortunate enough to be one of John's greatest admirers from all over the world!  Thank you very much for posting. xxx

Thanks so much for your wonderful sentiments Cora. I've always felt that John's music and life can't be put into words. They can only be felt. I've also always felt that he came along at just the right time and place. What he means to us all can't be expressed, it can only be felt. I also only feel a shared connection to his music with other fans, because not everyone gets it like we do. Thank you again for sharing your comments, and glad to provide the posting. Blessings, John.

@jrssjdca Hi John, sorry for waiting for so long before replying to your "reply"! My pc broke down on me for the longest time and I went through a terribly rough patch without music - but not just any music, John's music! And his videos, and his everything. I have just now finished listening and watching My Sweet Lady, and I am going nutsl - my heart is beating so. I listen to the chords, the voice, the arrangement, etc. and I do not know what to do with myself! No words can describe my experience with John's music. How I wish I could have met him.. Greetings to you, from a very cold South Africa! Cora xxx

RIP John Denver. I remember the day he died. I was in Israel on a Kibbutz getting drunk and partying and somebody said he had died in a plane.

This song deserves to be more well known.

John played this song solo at the Aspen Music Tent in 1995 at the last Windstar Symposium. He described how he wrote the song in Hong Kong, alone at a restaurant, on a napkin, one of those songs that just came from the sky. He played some "new" songs that never got recorded such as Wandering Soul, and Healing Time.
