Denver, John - Alaska And Me Lyrics

When I was a child and I lived in the city, I dreamed of Alaska so far away.
And I dreamed I was flying over mountains and glaciers,
somehow I knew that I'd live there one day.
Well it took me some growing, and a fair bit of schooling,
and a little bit of trouble to get on the move.
And I felt like a loser but I turned out the winner, when I came to Alaska the land that I love.
Here's to Alaska, here's to the people, here's to the wild and here's to the free.
Here's to my life in a chosen country, here's to Alaska and me.

I was born in a cabin on little Mulchatna, raised in hard times but I had a good life.
From the first time I flew with my father a singing, I knew that I'd wind up a bush pilot's wife.
We sleep near the sound of a slow running river and wake up most mornings to a drizzling rain.
And we face every day like the first or the last one with nothing to lose and Heaven to gain.
Here's to Alaska, here's to the people, here's to the wild and here's to the free.
Here's to my life in a chosen country, here's to Alaska and me, oh, here's to Alaska and me.

When I was a child and I lived in the city
I dreamed of Alaska so far away
And I dreamed I was flying over mountains and glaciers

Well it took me some growing, and a fair bit of schooling

And I felt like a loser but I turned out the winner
When I came to Alaska the land that I love
Here's to Alaska, here's to the people
Here's to the wild and here's to the free
Here's to my life in a chosen country
    Here's to Alaska and me

Here's to my life in a chosen country
    Here's to Alaska and me
Oh, for the fire on a cold winter's night
And once more to gaze at the great northern lights
For all of the beauty my children will see
    Here's to Alaska and me
Here's to Alaska, here's to the people
Here's to the wild and here's to the free
Here's to my life in a chosen country
    Here's to Alaska and me

Thank you Jim for a wonderful video. My first memory is of playing in Kodiak as a small child. My Dad was in the Coast Guard and we spent a year there when it was still a territory. I deeply regret that I waited until 2013 to return with my son to fish the Kenai. I should have come back sooner. We went last year and will go again this year. This place has changed me. It feels like coming home...

    m.... ....

+misterjoe3 Glad you liked it.  This video was from my first fishing trip to Alaska.  We go up every year now.  It definitely gets in your blood.

I miss Alaska. I grew up there... I had to move away from it. Hardest experience ever.

    b.... b....

I know how that feels. I live in Nevada now, which for me is like putting a polar bear in a desert. And I still haven't gotten use to the heat. If only health care was cheaper, I'd probably still be there. :/

    b.... b....

Yeah, if only most things were cheaper there. A lot of things were so expensive.. biggest reason I had to move.

    b.... b....

    I'm Minnesotan

    b.... b....

same, did fifteen years miss her. grew to be a man there. many moons ago.

I commented on this before, but each time I see you video it reminds me of Alaska, nature and love. Thank you so much for putting this up.

  23. n.... ....

I didn't get the job working on the pipeline around 1972, but have always wanted to go to Alaska. I want to drive it someday and perhaps I will. I should have moved there back then- then I would already be there, and then I could say "I want to stay in Alaska". LOL.

@ Jim, I think my two favorite places in the U.S. are Alaska and Sedona, AZ. I have your video on my favorites playlist. Maybe for your 2012 trip you can do a video to John Denvers other song about Alaska it is good too

  29. w.... ....

I still love this video and the song you used. Can't wait to go back.

  30. H.... ....

@Sjukurkottur It's not regularly sung, but it is fairly well known. If you would like to hear some songs about Alaska that are more popular here, try looking up Hobo Jim Alaska. Jim's the Official State Balladeer (no joke), and sings at places like the Governer's Picnic in Fairbanks and Anchorage, at Alaska Day celebrations, and random places like Sockeye's. It's not uncommon to sing along with the radio or in small groups in the bush, so it is quite possible something like that could happen.

  31. w.... ....

    I love this video

  32. R.... A....

@Flickerfast I could understand such a nostalgia, coming myself from a northern country. But tell me, is this a known song among the Alaskan population? Is it regularly sung by the people? There is another video on youtube with him singing this song in a family party, from a movie called Higher ground, is that something that could happen when Alaskans come together?

  33. A.... B....

This is a Beautiful song thank you so much for posting it....I lived in Alaska four years and this video reminds me of Alaska's beauty...how I long to go back to the little cosmic hamlet by the sea!

  34. S.... V....

    Nice video!

  35. M.... R....

@jtyrey Alaska was my home before it became a state. Went through the 64 earthquake. The Alaska experience is much more than fishing.

  36. J.... .....

they should have left america untainted as well....it was once beautiful, like alaska...

  37. J.... Y....

@molly195957 Molly, sorry you feel that way about it. I would be a lot more worried about something like the Pebble Mine than a few people staying in a remote cabin and eating 2 pinks and a couple of cuts. Pebble will rape your land and leave it pregnant with an unborn disaster in the womb, a monster lake of toxic waste in the headwaters of some of Alaska's best rivers.

  38. A.... K....

thats a nice Video and a beautiful song, my compliment!

  39. M.... R....

Flag as spam, but all I see is a bunch of tourists raping my homeland as their own country. How sad they can't find a J.D. song singing about their own.

  40. M.... R....

Grew up in Alaska. Camped all summer, panned for gold, dreamed big. Thanks for adopting me Mom & Dad. Alaska made me who I will always be no matter what life throws at me.

    Nice song! and nice pictures!
