Dennen, Brett - Darlin' Do Not Fear Lyrics

When I arrived in my own set of clothes
I was half a world away from my home
And I was hunted by the wolves and I was heckled by the crows
Darlin' do not fear what you don't really know

Alongside my innocence I laid in bed awake
Conflicted in these chains with the impetus of age
But like a phantom she crept across the floor and out the window
Darlin' do not fear what you don't really know

From this place on the mantle my heart was taken down
Scattered in a thousand little pieces on the ground
And out below the streetlamp like an orphan with a halo
Darlin' do not fear what you don't really know

'Cause it won't last - the worries will pass
All your troubles they don't stand a chance
And sometimes it takes more than a lifetime to know
Darlin' do not fear what you don't really know

The confidence is full with your faith etched in stone
And I let clean comfort you from the wild unknown
So bury your burning hatred like a hatchet in snow
Darlin' do not fear what you don't really know

If you have a broken heart or a battered soul
Find something to hold on to or to let go
To help you through the hard nights like a flask filled with hope
Darlin' do not fear what you don't really know

'Cause it won't last - your worries will pass
All your troubles they don't stand a chance
And it always hurts the worst when it's the ones we love the most
Darlin' do not fear what you don't really know

Sometimes your path is marked in the sky
Sometimes you're forced to fit in between the lines
Sometimes all that you can do is say no
Darlin' do not fear what you don't really know

I said, when I arrived in my own set of clothes
I was half a world away from my home
And I was hunted by the wolves and I was heckled by the crows
Darlin' do not fear what you don't really know
I said, Darlin' do not fear what you don't really know
We said, Darlin' do not fear

When I arrived in my old set of clothes
I was half a world away from my home
And I was hunted by the wolves and I was heckled by the crows
Darlin? do not fear what you don't really know

Alongside my innocence I laid in bed awake
Conflicted and in chains with the impetus of age
But like a phantom she crept across the floor and out the window
Darlin? do not fear what you don't really know

From its place on the mantel my heart was taken down
Scattered in a thousand little pieces on the ground
And I below the street lamp like an orphan with a halo
Darlin? do not fear what you don't really know

'cause it won't last, worries?ll pass
All your troubles, they don't stand a chance
And sometimes it takes more than a lifetime to know
Darlin? do not fear what you don't really know

Your confidences fall as your faith etched in stone
Neither could comfort you from the wild unknown
So bury your burning hatred like a hatchet in the snow
Darlin? do not fear what you don't really know

If you have a broken heart or a battered soul
Find something to hold onto until they go
To help you through the hard nights like a flask filled with hope
Darlin? do not fear what you don't really know

'cause it won't last, your worries?ll pass
All your troubles, they don't stand a chance
And it always hurts the worst when it?s the ones we love the most
Darlin? do not fear what you don't really know

Sometimes your path is marked in the sky
Sometimes it falls too thin in between the lines
Sometimes all that you can do is say 'No'
Darlin? do not fear what you don't really know

I said when I arrived in my old set of clothes
I was half a world away from my home
And I was hunted by the wolves and I was heckled by the crows
Darlin? do not fear what you don't really know
I said, darlin? do not fear what you don't really know
We said, darlin? do not fear

I went with my ex to hear Brett play and he didn't believe me that this was a man.
I suppose it's irrelevant- but I get the Tracy Chapman vibe too

  20. L.... L....

I loved Brett Dennen when he first started out and I love the Congolese rumba vibe. I get the Paul Simon comparisons, but it is a different part of Africa. He is a great guitarist too.

  21. k.... ....

Paul Simon vibes on this one.

  22. B.... L....

    B.... W....

Reminds me of the Congolese music I love. Takes a white ginger to make it popular. LOL

Paul Simon? That's not saying much.

    this is such a feel-good song :')

  36. m.... ....

Does anyone else think this one crazy guy just spends all his time on youtube looking for videos with no dislikes and disliking them?

  37. i.... ....

Thumbs up if you don't care how people hear good music or if you think "Thumbs up if's" are annoying. I figure, however, if you cant beat them; join them.

  38. r.... ....

LOL.... Those bastards need to be buried alive.

  39. A.... Z....

    3 love love love :)

  40. L.... M....

You mean Sydney (I'll Come Running)

  44. A.... C....

he could of ripped this riff off from me, i don't care, this song is still gold. smd. PEACE.

i found brett after listening to a couple of timmy curran songs which i found after someone told me about amos lee ... all 3 are great singers <3 them all

  46. r.... ....

@DoomWear Sidney ill be coming is great!

  47. S.... D....

I heard about this on Quibblo!

  48. G.... ....

Wow, i like the way they used the Soukous type rhythm in this song. Wish the bass guitar woulda come with some nice soukous rhythms too, that would have killed it :)

  49. c.... ....

youtube.com/watch?v=G0FxPp99vhU - this riff performed by Vincent Nguini in Central Park, only THIRTEEN years before Dennen "wrote" it .

  50. c.... ....

@raebre I'm with you on this one raebre. Heard this song in a mall recently and instantly recognized it as the Cecilia riff from Paul Simon's 1991 tour. Apparently Dennen was greatly influenced by Simon, but he's evidently less willing to declare it on his record... it's a shame, 'cause Cecilia is a much better song, and the kids are growing up listening to this watered down imitation.

  51. g.... ....

OMG--- In the Video "Ziplining Guy Falls to his Death", the guy ziplining looks EXACTLY like Brett! I don't think it's really him, but who knows?!?! If anyone knows, post me!

  52. S.... ....

@sirchocotaco uh, dude? he's saying not to fear the unknown...so that they can handle themselves...

  53. P.... P....

I hear this every day at Outback Steakhouse over the intercom. I don't know what I feel about this song. It's like the walls in the Shawshank Redemption. First you don't like them, then you get used to them, then you need them. I would be all wonked out if this song didn't play.

  54. b.... a....

i heard this song in shermans way :D

  55. S.... S....

I just listened to this song on Pandora, and his voice is really awesome and distinct.

  56. D.... Z....

Thumbs up if... you have thumbs and like to put them up.

  57. D.... ....

    wow!

Was watching the movie Sherman's Way, where this song was playing during the end credits. Never heard of Brett before but I absolutely love this song and had it on repeat for 30 minutes now lol..

Will definitely search for more of his work after I got tired of this song, eventually :P

  58. r.... ....

@MTDabydeen It's hOn as in honey. Sorry, just enjoying the music and got nosy. Which I think is maybe what we should be doing. Enjoying the music instead of correcting grammar.

  59. A.... G....

    greetings from greece!

  60. A.... Z....

    Amasing song!!
I wish he was better known and more listened in my country...
Need more quality music like this!!
    Greetings from Italy!

  61. L.... ....

"and it always hurts the worst when it's the ones you love the most" this is so true to me rightnow. all my best friends just betrayed me :/

  62. b.... ....

It goes without saying this is far better than all the fakers on the radio these days...
I found him by accident, now I'm gonna have to buy all his albums! :D

  63. E.... ....

very Paul Simon-ish..... it's really too bad he doesn't get more exposure, instead we get an abundance of meaningless garbage from talentless "Musicians". I heard of Brett from a friend, and I've been moved by every song of his I've heard.
