Niecy Williams is a true vocal genius and one of the greatest singers of the upper register. But the reason that I rank Minnie one and Niecy two on the list is because Riperton could sing up there with more force and power. It’s an amazing feat to be able to reach octaves that high like Niecy, Mariah, Chante, Fischer and a few others but Riperton use to go up there with power still in the voice. It’s was amazing.

There is NO soprano (Mariah Carey and Minnie Riperton included) who could match Miss Williams interns of her power and clarity in the upper registers. She did all this without straining, nor sacrificing the warmth, intimacy and accessibility of her tone. Add to that the golden production of the EW&F (Stepney/White) team of her peak years, and she remains the standard by which all others must be judged.

Yes, Niecy is one of the best coloratura sopranos in the popular music realm. She along with Minnie, Uma Sumac, and maybe a few others who came along during the era where there were no other female voices on the radio who sounded like this. Later generations of high sopranos who were influenced by them ( Mariah, Chante Moore, Shaniece, Lisa Fischer, etc) came along because Niecy and Minnie in particular had paved the way.

Love Deniece Williams so much!!! My favorite album of hers has Silly, Gonna Take a Miracle, Stangers, It's your Conscience, and You're All That Matters To Me. I really think this album is only second to "Songs in the Key of Life" by Stevie Wonder. She is definately my favorite female vocalist of all time, and I Love a lot of female vocalists. Minnie, Cherrelle, Janet, Diana, I love them all, But Deniece? That's my girl! Go watch Unsung!
