DeMent, Iris - No Time To Cry Lyrics

My father died a year ago today
The rooster started crowing when they carried Dad away
There beside my mother, in the living room, I stood
With my brothers and my sisters, knowing Dad was gone for good
Well, I stayed at home just long enough to lay him in the ground
And then I caught a plane to do a show up north in Detroit town
Because I'm older now and I've got no time to cry

I've got no time to look back, I've got no time to see
The pieces of my heart that have been ripped away from me
And if the feeling starts to coming, I've learned to stop 'em fast
'Cause I don't know, if I let 'em go, they might not want to pass
And there's just so many people trying to get me on the phone
And there's bills to pay, and songs to play, and a house to make a home
I guess I'm older now and I've got no time to cry

I can still remember when I was a girl
But so many things have changed so much here in my world
I remember sitting on the front yard when an ambulance went by
And just listening to those sirens I would break down and cry
But now I'm walking and I'm talking, doing just what I'm supposed to do
Working overtime to make sure that I don't come unglued
I guess I'm older now and I've got no time to cry

I've got no time to look back, I've got no time to see
The pieces of my heart that have been ripped away from me
And if the feeling starts to coming, I've learned to stop 'em fast
'Cause I don't know, if I let 'em go, they might not want to pass
And there's just so many people trying to get me on the phone
And there's bills to pay, and songs to play, and a house to make a home
I guess I'm older now and I've got no time to cry

Now I sit down on the sofa and I watch the evening news
There's a half a dozen tragedies from which to pick and choose
The baby that was missing was found in a ditch today
And there's bombs a'flying and people dying not so far away
And I'll take a beer from the 'frigerator and go sit out in the yard
And with a cold one in my hand, I'm gonna bite down and swallow hard
Because I'm older now and I've got no time to cry

I've got no time to look back, I've got no time to see
The pieces of my heart that have been ripped away from me
And if the feeling starts to coming, I've learned to stop 'em fast
'Cause I don't know, if I let 'em go, they might not want to pass
And there's just so many people trying to get me on the phone
And there's bills to pay, and songs to play, and a house to make a home
I guess I'm older now and I've got no time to cry
I guess I'm older now, I just ain't got no time to cry
No time to cry
No time to cry
No time to cry

Almost died in 9/15/19 a stranger saved my life with CPR a month and open heart later, I sit here listening to iris, and know I’ve met a real angel who is allowing me to listen to my favorite woman in life.. THANK YOU GOD FOR THIS WONDERFUL GIFT OF LIFE

  2. c.... z....

"Pieces of my heart have been ripped away from me."

  3. R.... M....

Her voice is so incredible I literally tear up listening to her.

  4. D.... B....

I grew up with Top 40/Motown radio from competing stations. We were fortunate. I do know that music is subjective. I also know that several voices were heaven sent. Being objective, I cannot imagine singers that are so unique in their stylings than ...

    Ella Fitzgerald
    Brian Wilson
    Tracey Nelson
    Iris DeMent

Purity, Power, Range, Overall Ability all wrapped up inside wondrous lyrics. We are all blessed.

  5. R.... M....

Love country.iris a massive favourite.as is Australia's Kasey chambers.kasey actually said in an interview she would have loved to have written " no time to cry".

  6. s.... ....

What a song, what a singer!

Every note she sings has a tear in it...

    NO TIME TO CRY
    [Verse 1]

Lies stiff and cold,,,down in the ground,,

  10. E.... R....

There never was, and never will be again, another Iris Dement. God bless her for her powerful messages to our heart.

  11. P.... S....

Ok I don't like country. But this voice and phrasing has converted me. Not into" crystal chandeliers" but this is wonderful. Thank you. Must be getting old.

  12. s.... ....

  17. G.... K....

I love this song but every time I listen to it makes me cry :"))

  18. g.... ....

This is everything great about Country. Beautiful but heartbreaking. And it's real.

  19. A.... C....

I don't like country music at all, but my parents have always been into alt country and, as a result, I listened to Iris Dement (and Nancy Griffith, etc) as a kid. I would have been six when this was released; I used to go to sleep to a cassette tape of this album. I don't know if it is due to events going on at that time in my life, or if it's purely down to her artistry, but her music has a completely unparalleled ability to bring me to my knees almost instantly. It's crazy; the song doesn't even have to be sad. 0.5 seconds and I am weeping like a baby

  20. M.... ....

    Aisling

  21. V.... G....

While I let her rest for awhile, I always go back to Iris. Songs like this remind me why I do.

  29. R.... G....

Song about how hard it is to do what you must do. Thank you Iris it makes it a little easier.

  30. W.... J....

Raw, direct, open and direct. That's what her voice promises and delivers. This song is the first I ever heard her sing, on the radio on Saturday morning not long after her My Life album came out. She's had me from that day to this.

  31. H.... B....

This song is the equivalent of a cup of fresh coffee and a cigarette in the morning... Maybe even a tad stouter.

  32. d.... ....

Things get ripped away from all of us, if we live long enough. Iris DeMent has done this brilliant song about coping and carrying on.

  33. T.... K....

    Thank You Iris...............................💝

  46. J.... S....

I am in love with Iris Dement. I just want to world to know it. Never told anyone because people would laugh "him with Iris, he has no talent at all." Maybe I don't, but I know all her songs and she is probably the only gal that I would ever be shy around.I hear truth in her voice and the way she says things....it's a voice that is so soulful, back of my head's hair will sometimes stand up, makes walk a bit more up right, a bit more "do the right thing in life" She is quite the woman, as I said, I am in love with her and probably always be in love with her; I bet she would give me the time of day if I asked her, I believe she is that kind of person.

    J.... S....
