i learned about this song from the leftovers but went back to it today b/c i was trying to quickly learn a west virginia accent for an audition. it occurred to me how little we hear people in the media, in the arts and in public life speaking and singing with this voice outside country music. a lot of americans speak this way. i think what must happen is that when folks leave that region they do their best to suppress it because it's associated with being backward, poor, prejudiced. i'm big-time in favor of people being proud of the kind of english they learned to speak as children--or as adults. awesome to hear real musical poetry like this in a unique american style of english. i'm third generation jewish american with parents from the bronx and ontario, and was raised in massachusetts--so that's me.

For those who don't know, the song "Iris" by the Goo Goo Dolls was named after her. The lead singer was on the phone with the record label and they wanted him to give them the name for that specific song - he was reading the paper and there was an article about Iris Dement so he told them "Iris".

I'd like to give this song 20 thumb ups. If only I could. These lyrics say it all. No wonder this song was chosen for the opening credits in The Leftovers.
Hats off to Lindelof and his pals for the great story and the soundtracks chosen for the series.

Sorry to say that but I have to skip the beginning every time only not to listen to this piercing voice, I feel like my eardrums are about to explode.

I still haven't seen The Leftovers. I just love Iris. But I'm glad the show gave her more exposure.

@Chance I'll be honest, knowing that Damon Lindelöf was the showrunner has made me hesitant to watch it. I had no use for Lost. But I am enjoying his Watchmen so far, so maybe I'll give it a go. I have heard good things about it.

Big Fan of Country, Ken Burns and The Leftovers. I think you’d call this Bluegrass.

The moment I watched season 1 and liked it very much I knew it would be cancelled at some point because it is actually good and no good TV shows can be popular unless it's mainly about sex, sexuality, politics and just random story that attracts kids and teens. Or grown-ups with the mind of a teenager.

ron webber - 100%. Atheists claim there is no proof either way. It would be just as folly to claim proof one way or the other as you point out. Agnosticism is similar but rather claiming that no proof exists, they believe that they personally aren’t convinced. Hey- both old Greek words we adopted over the centuries so they are open to interpretation.

Atheism- without a god
Agnosticism- without wisdom

I’ve been hearing the term ‘anti-theist’ recently and believe it is a newer group who, while adhering to the no-proof doctrine of atheism, go further to assert that those who do believe in a god cause more harm than good.

@Alex Taylor fair enough. It's not the God that's the issue it's the dogma that man puts upon the God that's the disaster.

Personally I think "god" is love. I've seen things that defied the human intellect I've seen a healing that couldnt be explained and I've had some crazy coincidences.. maybe because I was upon to the invisible ot shows up. But yeah people screw up everything with trying to convert ppl to their views. It's a dhame

Knew this song well b4 the leftovers but was pleasantly surprised to hear it in season 2. For anyone that hasnt watched the Leftovers, you are missing out. One of the best shows out there.

yeah, you don't need to pay attention to the lyrics. She has a wonderful voice and it's a great tune, good tempo and great musicians. "Just let the history be....."

Bittersweet, as was The Leftovers. It had elements which would usually have absolutely infuriated me but it was so good, it didn't. And I think as an exploration of what it explores - hard to see how it will ever be done better.
It also makes an interesting coda to Avengers: Endgame, where not 2 or 98 but exactly 50 departed... and came back!

I`ve convinced myself there is a heaven where we shall end "Happy ever after" scenario..........Life is truly hard living with loved ones gone by...........Used to this pain since about 2/3 yrs old.........I keep going by simply writing stupid poems (in annoyance to my family and others) plus art............

I'd say you should consider yourself an agnostic instead of an atheist. I too have dealt with a lot of loss in my life. I would mind hearing one or two of those poems you talk about...

Iris,her sister and I worked together as kids in a restaurant.I only heard she was then incredible by a mutual friend ( Paul Cooper ).She offered to play us her new song and remember not having the time to stay and listen. Only later did I hear of her success.Big life regret! She was so sweet and she probably still is.

It sums up all the theology of all the faiths of all the people who understand the value of love. We get two marks on the gravestone. it is what you do in between those two dates that matters. this song reminds me of everything to come, and the value of life.
