Del Shannon - Handy Man Lyrics

Hey girls, gather round
Because of what I'm puttin' down
Oh, baby, I'm your handy man
I'm not the kind that uses pencil or rule
I'm handy with the love and I'm no fool
I fix broken hearts, I know I really can

If your broken heart needs repair
I'm the man to see. I whisper sweet things
You tell all your friends, and they'll come running to me
Here is the main thing I want to say
I'm busy twenty four hours a day
I fix broken hearts, I know I really can

Hey girls, gather round
Because of what I'm puttin' down
Oh, baby, I'm your handy man
I'm not the kind that uses pencil or rule
I'm handy with the love and I'm no fool
I fix broken hearts, I know I really can

If your broken heart needs repair
I'm the man to see. I whisper sweet things
You tell all your friends, and they'll come running to me
Here is the main thing I want to say
I'm busy twenty four hours a day

It's a great rocking tune because this song has heavy rock treatments. For the way music was to sound in the years to come. In 1960 Jimmy Jones had a hit with this song. Four years later Del Shannon did his remake of this song. He did it this way because he was competing with the British Invasion. That's what was taking place in America 1964. From 1964 & 1965 Del Shannon had a string line of hits. He still was a factor during this time. Before his hit streak came to an untimely end. But in a way he brought this song to life. He did it Del Shannon style because it's a fast rocking tune.

  9. G.... F....

Franki Valli's falsetto and Lou Christie's falsettos were very high which got on my nerves. Del Shannon has a beautiful falsetto.

  10. j.... g....

It's a great song. He brings this song to life. I prefer this version better. Because he give this song some heavy rock treatments. That's where he was ahead of his time. Something we were to hear in music in the coming years.

  11. C.... M....

Best version of this song by a mile. Del Shannon was pure gold, such a talent. Gone too soon!

  15. R.... H....

Thanx for posting... in my view one of Del's best.

Hard to come to grips with suicide. Shannon killed himself in 1990 for those who don't know. It seems like talented individuals teeter on the brink. Almost looks like a link between talent and suicidal depression. The list is long of those who suffered and lost the battle. Fortunately for me, I couldn't carry a tune in a bucket.

    C.... F....

@Susan Bolton Just took a look at Jake S. Excellent uke player. This year on America's Got Talent the young girl who won first place did it with a uke. I have listened to Il Volo before. Great singers.

    C.... F....

I don't know the full story on his suicide, but I think his widow said Prozac had something to do with it.

    C.... F....

You’re right. This was in the 90s when there was an epidemic of people killing themselves while on Prozac. Shannon was unfortunate in that his doctor gave him a prescription.

    C.... F....

Genius often ends that way. Sadly

    C.... F....

    @SoapOpera Henry Paul 97 diana's driver was on prozac&alcool: Tough cocktail!😕😭🙏🚔🍷💊👿👥👼

  17. R.... C....

Del Shannon with another nice song.

  18. L.... ....

First concert I ever saw was Del Shannon in the Lake Park Town Hall, Lake Park, Florida, in summer 1964. Loved it. Later that falsetto summer I saw Lou Christie, at the Colonnades Beach Hotel, Palm Beach Shores, Florida. What a summer!

    L.... ....

    no Frankie Valli ?

    L.... ....

Dope as fuck! Lucky, what an experience!

  19. m.... h....

del shannon was the man with the teardrop in his voice irieplaceable

  20. K.... M....

Thank the heavens and angels I found this song. I have been looking for a fast song version of this forever! I was started to think James Taylor's slow boring tone was the only one the existed!

    K.... M....

+ALEX murphy Yes, Alex, this is a great version - Del is the only singer over the past 50 years who never released a poor song. I love every single thing he recorded. But James Taylor has a slow boring tone!!!??? That's like saying Shakespeare was an ok advertising copywriter. It's called SOUL!!

    K.... M....

    @Ian Thomas Lmao true

    K.... M....

I believe Jimmy Jones recorded the original..

    K.... M....

Colin Noble Jimmy Jones did record the original in 1960. Del Shannon recorded his version in 1964. They're both great songs.

  21. M.... ....

Sorry Troy, but I do prefer this a little to Jimmy Jones - and maybe even James Taylor. Del had a unique voice.

  22. t.... ....

An entire generation thinks that this is a James Taylor tune...
    No, no, just listen:
    It's much more than that.

    t.... ....

Well now if someone could actually be a "handy man", well, he'd make a fortune! I remember this version as I grew up listening to this kind of music. My parents loved music from the 40's, 50's, and 60's....big band, swing, rock 'n roll, you name it!

    t.... ....

Prince Valium couldn't hold a candle to Dels xersion it makes me sick to hear them played together.

    t.... ....

Del Shannon wasn't the first to release it either. It was originally released by Jimmy Jones.

    t.... ....

@Charlie Jacobs James Taylor is a god. Watch your garbage-clown mouth.

  23. C.... F....

I don't understand how people can say this version is better than the original by Jimmy Jones

    C.... F....

Let me preface what I'm about to say by first saying I'm a Del Shannon fan. That being said, YES, I agree with you. The Jimmy Jones original was sung a lot better. The only thing I like more about Shannon's version was the use of the guitar.

    C.... F....

I used to think this was the original until I heard the Jimmie Jones version.

    C.... F....

    What's wrong with
enjoying both versions? Although this is my favorite.

    C.... F....

I don't understand how either version can even come close to a beautiful version. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=69M1HXS2Vk8 Those oldie things are whacked and sound like the circus just came to town. lol.

    C.... F....

Del just takes it up a notch with the guitars and organ. a little bit more rockin than Jimmy Jones great original.

  24. L.... A....

My dad loves del. He got me to like it too when I was 12, I'm 36 now and still love it

  25. L.... C....

    Ditto to speed45rpm.

    Del rules.

  26. T.... ....

definately the best version jimmy jones to slow and boring

    T.... ....

Jimmy had way better vocals than Del

  27. g.... l....

i didn't know he's not the original singer. jimmy jones is.

    g.... l....

Jimmy gives it that little bit more.

  28. a.... ....

Del,  I play your songs all the time on my guitars and sing--- I miss you so much--You were the greatest!! One of my favorites was " Go to pieces"  I do on my 12-string!!!    I love you----See you some day soon.  Ever after-----Tony Brooks :>

  29. B.... F....

Without a doubt this is del's best recording!

  30. J.... C....

One Del's best. I used to listen to it back in the day. Everything he sang was great.

  31. s.... ....

Best falsetto in rock 'n' roll history.

    mcp

    s.... ....

I agree that he is one of the best but I have to give the nod to Frankie Valli as the BEST!  But I am a BIG DS fan and I have always loved his strong voice on his many hits.  Too bad that he left this world much too soon,

    s.... ....

    @Doug Celeste
    I think I agree, provisionally:
Among the White Guys, Shannon and Valli are tied for first place.

    s.... ....

Hard to argue with you there, though Jimmy Beaumont of The Skyliners also comes to mind along with some others of the rock and roll and doo-wop eras.  But yes, overall, Del and Frankie are 'the leaders of the pack'.

    s.... ....

    don't forget Lou Christie.

    s.... ....

and though they just had a couple of hits the Newbeats had Larry Henley...the definitive falsetto in rock n roll !

  32. r.... ....

this golden sound is pure DEL SHANNON

  33. 2.... ....

Great song to dance to . Believe me that was a long time ago . Any one know who is playing the organ on this song ?

  34. j.... g....

    dell shannon

  35. J.... K....

One person is not handy with love...

  36. s.... ....

As much as I like the Jimmy Jones original, I prefer the energy Del brings to this oft-recorded song. He still managed to slip it into the Top 40 during the summer of 64, the most frenzied period of the British Invasion and the emergence of Motown and with groups like the Beach Boys and Four Seasons at their peaks. Thanks for posting another gem from the great Del Shannon.

  37. r.... ....

    I bought this 45!

  38. F.... ....

How does this song only have 800 views?

    F.... ....

Most people know the Jimmy Jones version of this song, so they probably didn't look for it under Del Shannon even though the song sounds like it was written for Del, however it was written before Runaway became a hit. Too bad the composer didn't know about Del a couple years earlier.

  39. b.... s....

For a cover not too bad. He has talent.
