One of my friends called them "American Dir En Grey" and now i understand why! Those squeaky screams are very similar to something on Dum Spiro Spero, as well the meddley drumming.

Considering that the Deftones have been around since the early to mid 90's, and that they likely inspired some of Dir En Grey's sound, this comment offends the hell out of me lol

This song is about a lonely dude (probably Chino) going through loneliness from heartbreak, "Deciding" to approach some hot girl for the sake of fulfilling his emotional void/sexual desires.

He is yelling "DECIDE" because it is the voice of his uncontrollable desire screaming from within, while he knows that he is just fulfilling lust as a drug. "IS IT SAFE TO SAY" means "is this a good idea?" Then, when it calms down into "You walked in it," it means "you got what you wanted, you are fucking." "Was it like it seemed" means "was it as good as you fantasized. The music gets calm because it represents an orgasm, the relaxing release of sexual tension.

BUT, then he screams "I WON'T SAY NOTHING," meaning this is a secret/we're not exclusive partners, let' not complicate things. Then he yells "WISH SHE WOULD'VE SAID SOMETHING," meaning "I wish she would've not been cold and shown some affection." So it's a struggle between his need for real affection and not just casual fucking, which is an addiction that is eating him from within, emptying his soul.

Then the drum solo begins, with the heavy ass chops and chugs on the guitar. This is the depths of his resentment. This is the panic attack and anxiety that gradually boils within his soul. He's oppressing his need for affection and fighting his demons inside ferociously...

... then it kicks back in with DECIDE!! Restarting the vicious cycle.

EVERYTHING IS FINE is the manifestation of denial, because NOTHING is fine. He's yelling it, trying to convince himself that everything is ok.

There is no coincidence as to why Deftones has a major sexual influence to their music. Their covers demonstrate sexuality and lust in a very drug induced way, and Chino's lyrics reflect his personal struggles with his relationships. I can really identify his emotional struggles, because toxic relationships are pretty rampant for our instant-gratifying generation.

Man, Abe's playing on this one is fucking great! And the drums usually don't stand out to me either.

Abe is an awesome drummer, man! Listen to songs like Rx Queen and Prince. He's known for his odd time signatures and and intense energy. Very underrated drummer.

Matt Rose Ohh yeah, he did have some sick shit on both of those huh. I forgot about Rx almost entirely haha. Great songs. I heard Prince way back when the album came out and was like "Hey. Rx Queen 2.0." Love everything about both songs.

I love how this song alternates between heavy riffs and softer music.

When deftones go from very melodic "space" rock at times to the metal/hardcore-inspired riffs and screaming, it brings nothing but joy to my ears. : )
