Defeater - Stale Smoke Lyrics

Ashed air
Lingering in the dim lit corners
Where the sun is peaking in
A window blocked out, cracking
Day in, day out
He turns the floor and hard luck
Sun up, sun down
He pushes hurt and poor souls
Shuffle in through the door, kicked
Always on their last drink
Suffer on their last leg, breaking
Day in, day out
The numbers run
Hard luck
Sun up, sun down
He pushes on
Poor souls

Left along the beach
Haunt and stay with me
I lose sleep to keep the dreams from coming
And stave off the pain
That comes with their names
Drink deep to keep my heart from aching

Ashed air
Breathe deep with the stale smoke
Trailing off the lit end, dragging
Cigarette glow burning
Day in, day out, he turns the floor with hard luck
Too much, too young, he pushes on poor souls
Shuffles through to sway a bad break
Coming off a cold streak, cut deck and a card cheat grinning
Day in, day out, the numbers run hard luck
Too much, too young, he pushes on poor souls

How are you going to see the ending coming
With your head turned around, struck and bleeding out?
How are you gong to keep those lies from coming?
Your teeth line the ground, tongue cut from your mouth, struck and bleeding out
Aching poor souls

Buried off the beach
Haunt and stay with me
Lose sleep to keep the dreams from coming
Their debts left in vain, a laundry list of names
I drink deep to keep my head from spinning
To keep my heart from aching

Vocals are mixed so low cause his voice is shot. But still has his raspy tone that still works for their style. Oh and I miss jay.

  6. j.... g....

Shit good song! Is someone else hearing the ringing guitar sounding like a vacuum in the end part? It sounds better with good speakers but it annoys me when listening on my tv and in my headphones.

  7. A.... G....

damn - the concept of the recording, instrumentals in the front line, vocals second row...really was a bad idea :(

  8. D.... ....

Vocals are awfully muddled, sometimes outright buried. :( Lots of potential though

  9. S.... ....

    Turn up the vocals please!

  10. N.... R....

    Vocals up, please and thankyou.

  11. Y.... J....

Songs a banger fellas but the vocals need to have some more volume.

  12. B.... M....

So much for storytelling. The vocals are too quiet, this sounds like a garbled mess.

  13. S.... S....

In Abandoned and Letters Home the vocals sound better. Was it the same producer back then?

    S.... S....

nvm just looked it up lol

  14. S.... N....

I love it but I can’t get passed the vocals being so quiet. Please please please don’t let the full release be so quiet.

  16. D.... B....

Fuckin' Will Yip!! Stop this. Not cool. Solid track otherwise but the drowned vocals, grrrrr.

  17. A.... S....

  24. G.... F....

    i like the mix *shrug*
    great song

  25. C.... ....

    Very norma Jean sounding

  26. T.... F....

Is this about the bookie from endless days?

  27. A.... B....

Why is Will Yip on everything? There's maybe one or two records of his that I like the production and he's done a lot of my favorite records. (if that makes sense) I would love to hear someone else.

  28. N.... H....

You know you fucked up the vocal mix when the entire comment section says turn it up.

  29. O.... G....

Why is everybody obsessed with the vocals being too low in the mix? That’s an artistic decision. And this is hardcore music, it’s not like the vocals are melodic and you can barely understand the lyrics anyway. What difference does it make? I even like it better this way personally.

    O.... G....

@Kevin R why should they call it something else tho? I honestly don't understand. What is hardcore then? Defeater is a band that came out of hardcore scene, influenced by hardcore and punk music, why shouldn't it be called hardcore? They even played shows with bands like Bane. If you want a specific genre name you can call it post-hardcore or melodic hardcore like i said. You can even all it modern hardcore, but it's still hardcore music. Why would we need to find a new name?

    O.... G....

Ozan GÜNER I don't know man... Maybe it's just a symptom of me getting old.
All I can say is that when I was a kid (many, many moons ago) when someone said a band was "hardcore", I knew exactly what to expect.
Nowadays, it has branched off into so many different factions which sound almost nothing alike, yet still carry the "hardcore" name, so when I hear about a new hardcore band, it really could be just about anything.
Maybe it's just a familiarity thing. People are just so used to using and hearing that term, that it can be applied to just about any type of heavy music.
My personal opinion is that it really all started with "Biohazard" back in the early 90's. Biohazard (I believe) was the first hardcore group to have multi-platinum records and a top-tier record contract (Warner Bros.) which brought hardcore into the mainstream, and into the living rooms of suburban kids around the world.
Prior to that, hardcore was almost exclusively found only in run-down areas in the big cities. Most folks had no clue it even existed at all.
After Biohazard broke into the big-time, then the floodgates opened, and a whole slew of different bands started popping up out of the suburbs and latched on the new "hardcore trend" (yes, it indeed became a trend)
Eventually, the original vibe of what hardcore was about became lost to me, because so many different types of other music were getting shoehorned into it.
Don't get me wrong, I do think it's a good thing to experiment with new sounds. I am just an old-timer dinosaur, I guess... but when I listen to this song, (and it is a good song) I don't think "hardcore"... Not even close.
Regardless, thats just my two cents, and my best days are long behind me. Rant over.

    O.... G....

@Kevin R I agree that at least "melodic hardcore" sounds like an odd term to use. Then again, melodic death metal exists but to me a band like Counterparts is considered metalcore because they still play breakdowns and are highly influenced by bands like Misery Signals, Killswitch Engage, It Dies Today, etc whereas Defeater's only main metalcore influence seems to come from bands like Botch or Converge.

    O.... G....

@Kevin R yeah i can understand that. But i think that's what's gonna happen with every music genre, it happened to punk, to hip-hop, to metal... I honestly think hardcore should not be mainstream, but i don't think Defeater is considered mainstream either. And i think that the raw energy, that feeling that made hardcore beautiful is still there with the bands like Defeater. Hardcore sounded different in each decade but i can still feel the same essence that made hardcore what it is. Maybe you should look into the late 90's and 2000's hardcore bands if you like what you're hearing (maybe you already know some of them i dunno). I really love bands like Modern Life is War, Have Heart, Bane, Killing The Dream, Life Long Tragedy, The Dedication, Ruiner, Faded Grey, Strike Anywhere etc. Defeater sounds like them imo. You might like them and also maybe you could understand why people like me still consider these bands hardcore. Peace man.

    P.S. Biohazard sucks lmao

    O.... G....

A little louder would be nice...so

  30. J.... G....

Yo fuckers turn up Derek's vocals I can barely hear him.

  31. F.... J....

Begging you guys to turn the vocals up on the final release. His vocals are what makes me love Defeater

    F.... J....

@Sid Neal He's just another keyboard warrior seeking likes on a YouTube video. Nothing more, nothing less.

    F.... J....

Jason LovesABR you literally came at me saying my wording was bad when it clearly wasn’t. Quit being a pussy and go back to 4th grade English.

    F.... J....

@Jason LovesABR Shut the fuck up

    F.... J....

Defeater must have got together in the same room as LaD and just turned down the vocal mic. Other than that killer track

    F.... J....

What you hear here is the final release

  32. H.... M....

i am coming to the conclusion that Will Yip just doesn't like vocals in songs.

    H.... M....

DEFEATER should consider contacting Whoever recorded the new JOHNNY BOOTH album cause that shit hits really hard.

    H.... M....

@A B it's a shame because Jordan's vocals mesh so well with the rest of the band, but i was really disappointed with it being nothing more than filler on this album. i shouldn't have to constantly have lyrics up just to follow along with their songs, i've never had that issue before.

    H.... M....

@ry kurowski i guess that's what's hot on the streets right now.

    H.... M....

@M D so true. I can't stop listening to it!

    H.... M....

@M D Hell yeah! Thanks for mentioning it! 👍

  33. r.... ....

    Vocals up please.

  34. C.... ....

TURN THE VOCALS UP! Song is amazing but the vocals are too quiet

  35. E.... ....

    Terrible mix ruined this song.

    E.... ....

    @Patrick Petit most likely.

  36. W.... ....

I hope the vocals are able to be heard on the finished product. Everything sounds great but Derek’s muffled voice.

    W.... ....

I kinda like it this way

    W.... ....

    i think they sound perfect

    W.... ....

Gheorghe Cosma And I think it sounds like someone recorded a live concert on their smartphone. So we have a different opinion.

    W.... ....

    @Krystian Andrzejewski Why lol

    W.... ....

@Waz Especially around 2:50. Jesus... I could hear someone whispering a lot more clearer than that.

  37. A.... s....

    Amazing!!!!!😱😱

  38. D.... ....

Instrumentals seem much better this time around than past few albums but I wish the vocals were more up front in the mix.

    D.... ....

    that's will yip for you

    D.... ....

    Right, Converge worship.

  39. I.... L....

the mix on the vocals is uh..not great? Like I hate to say it, but I can barely hear them and at times the instrumental just drowns them out? I'm not sure if that's intentional but it makes the song very incoherent

    I.... L....

@Monique Angelica Carzon Yeah, Will seems like a very talented guy, and i mean he's not a bad producer, he's done a lot with Title Fight and the recent Tigers Jaw album as well, which sounded really good. But idk, these two singles so far are hard to like cause i have no idea what I'm listening to :/

    I.... L....

@Monique Angelica Carzon I also just looked it up, he's not actually responsible for the mix, so that's not on will haha

    I.... L....

I Love Speed Wagon who is mixing this? I love defeater but this mix is too quiet on the vocals

    I.... L....

    @Cameron no clue atm

    I.... L....

That's Will Yip for you. Solid instrumentals with low, barely audible vocals

  40. M.... A....
