Deep Purple - Holy Man Lyrics

Called to Madonna
To give me a line
She said boy what have you done
Passing your time with a holy man
Talking about the moon and sun
But I can't tell the difference
Between the fool and wise
Show me a river to follow
Away from all these lies

I've been on my own so long
Won't you lend me your hand
I've been picking up my bones too long
Won't you understand

Called to the captain
To put me ashore
For it looked like no man's land
Is this the way to follow
I cried as I shook his hand
He told me had no answer
He didn't really hold the key
I am a simple man
Was all he said to me

I've been on my own so long
Won't you lend me a hand
I've been out in the cold too long
Won't you understand
I've been on the road so long
Won't you lend me your hand
I've been out in the cold too long
Won't you understand

Heard my mother crying
She was calling out my name
Whisper in the dark night
Saying who's to blame
The hour glass keeps turning
With not enought sand to see
I am a holy man
So don't you bother me

I've been on my own so long
Won't you lend me your hand
I've been pickin' up my bones too long
Won't you understand
I've been on my own so long
Won't you lend me your hand
I've been out in the cold too long
Won't you understand?

  12. P.... N....

This was a beautiful song from the past-Gillan-era.
I think it's a very underrated song. Hughes was not only a very good bass player, but a pretty good singer too in DP!!!
By the way this album (Stormbringer) is underrated too.

  13. A.... D....

Oh and I am a holy man so don't you follow me. Haha. Follow your Kundalini energy to enlightenment you poor fools. Haha.

  14. A.... D....

Stormbringer was an absolutely brilliant album so rush out and buy it on vinyl and play it through a 150 watt amp with a graphic equaliser and huge speakers of your choice. Haha. Then you will know the joy of playing music in the 20th century. Haha. Brilliant energetic album by Deep Purple.

  21. S.... ....

This whole album is fucking great. I’m not sure how Blackmore doesn’t like this when plenty of older purple was blues based or was slightly funky. The organ on hush is funky as fuck. Anyways, I love this album. I think the combo of Coverdale and Hughes is fantastic. All three albums they did are my favorite purple albums.

  22. L.... V....

    Temazo!

  23. a.... 6....

This is so perfect that bring tears to my eyes... I can't believe that Glenn had only 21 years old here... He sings very mature. He was and is perfect human beeing to me.

    a.... 6....

He was 23 years that moment. He's born in 1951 and this album is from november 1974.

Va be io sono DIO

  59. L.... F....

Que solo de guitarra belíssimo !

  60. R.... R....

sounds as incredible as 30 years ago...

  61. t.... b....

every album they did were #1

  62. A.... M....

My favourite album of all time. Just gorgeous. Hughes and Coverdale, just amazing.

    A.... M....

I think Burn was the best from Mk III and Mk IV Deep Purple. The Mk II albums represent their best music from their best, though most tumultuous lineup (except for the half hearted Battle Rages On). Mk III was a close second though, the only Purple lineup to utilize more than one vocalist, and Coverdale and Hughes did a fantastic job leading the way vocally, in tandem, switching on and off, or taking a song solo. They were inspired by the Uriah Heep lead vocal tandem of Byron/Hensley, but Coverdale and Hughes were much better singers (all due respect to Uriah Heep)

    A.... M....

The first two Steve Morse albums with Jon Lord also stand out in the Purple catalogue. (Purpendicular, Abandon)

    A.... M....

@Mark Rago abandon is pretty progy and heavy and one of my Favs of them after the reunion. battle rages on, perfect strangers are good tio

    A.... M....

@MLG I can take or leave Battle Rages On. Aside from Anya and Twist in the Tail, not much of anything impressive there, they were going through the motions. Pretty bad you can tell nobody wanted to be there just from the second rate quality of the material. Perfect Strangers was pretty awesome though. You can tell Ritchie and Ian had a ten year break from each other, it has an enthusiastic, fun vibe less noticable on House of Blue Light and totally absent today The Battle....

    A.... M....

This one has also stuck with me for a long time....Of the few albums in which I love every track!

  63. V.... H....

    супер,делай,братка!!!

  64. A.... 8....

I mean I like David Coverdale, but why would you chose him as the lead vocalist if you have someone like Glenn Hughes in your band.

    A.... 8....

soldier of fortune would be trash is glenn hughes would perform it...i prefer david's voice...although glenn's voice is also good..

    A.... 8....

There's a documentary on the Mark 3 lineup on YouTube here and John Lord explains exactly why

    A.... 8....

Greg Hubbard yes, i recommend to watch. They just had a different concept of band and of lead singer. And it's fine for me because i realy like David's voice, despite beeing a freak fan of Glenn 😊

    A.... 8....

I love Glenn, but basically the band wanted to add another layer of sound with alternating vocal duties and harmonies, much like Uriah Heep was doing at the time.

    A.... 8....

Antares 8001 Because they wanted a Paul Rogers sounding vocalist. Glenn can be amazing and probably could have had more of a major role in DP but I think his out of time and exaggerated yelping and screeching and don’t forget the coke turned some band members off. In other words he blew it.

  65. T.... D....

Bat reeir used fresh will be yesternow Hughes

  66. .... ....

Blackmore is used a dry battery

  67. M.... E....

ONE OF THE BEST RECORD EVER !! IN THE ROCK BUISNESS .. MY OPINION OF COURSE !!

    EJE FROM SWEDEN

    M.... E....

My opinion too. It's so underrated and misunderstood because songs like hold on, you can't do it right, holy man, are different of everything that DP had already done. If an unknown band had made this album it would be considered a classic, but it's a DP album, so people only remember of Machine Head, In Rock, and Burn.

    M.... E....

I can concur with you - eje Ekeby \\m//

  68. D.... R....

    love this song

  69. P.... V....

    Essa música é foda demais!!!

    P.... V....

    né deep é foda

    P.... V....

É fodástica pra cacetão mesmo !!

  70. R.... T....

Glenn could easily perform those high notes...still i like David's raw voice more....on Soldier of Fortune...my fav ballad of all time

  71. E.... ....

0:57 & 2:07 = Wow! Cadence/resolving to a Major 7th chord! beautiful slide work...reminds me a bit of early Steely Dan - like their early single 'Sail the Waterway/Dallas'...totally 70s...

    E.... ....

And Blackmore didn't like the direction the band was taking...so sad.

  72. C.... B....

a perfect song, with in entrance a cool sting....

  73. L.... M....

    amo el rock vieja guardia

  74. A.... T....

    Semplicemente stupenda grazie Deep

  75. *.... ....

    I LOVE This Music

  76. C.... G....

    maravilloso tema y maravillosa banda...!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  77. j.... ....

    Glenn Hughes, great voice

    j.... ....

    yes!!!!!

    j.... ....

    justmadeit2 absolutely GH Voice Cool..👍👍✌👍✌

    j.... ....

@Zed P No, their idea was originally to blend Glenn Hughes and Paul Rodgers voices.

    j.... ....

Anki Hansen ... that would have been amazing. Not to take anything away from Coverdale.

    j.... ....

Zed P you are wrong! And i find it very boring and common. His voice is struggling and says nothing in particular.

  78. M.... M....

    <3 <3 <3 <3

  79. D.... C....

Blackmore is just making the melody better, he has no idea what money is he going to get for that.
