Deep Purple - Help Lyrics

When I was younger, so much younger than today
I never needed anybody's help in any way
But now these days are gone I'm not so self assured
Now I find I've changed my mind, opened up the door

Help if you can I'm feeling down
But I do appreciate you being round
Help me get my feet back on the ground
Won't you please help me

And now my life has changed in oh so many ways
My independence seems to vanish in the haze
But every now and then I feel so insecure
Now I know I need you like I've never done before

Help if you can I'm feeling down
But I do appreciate you being round
Help me get my feet back on the ground
Won't you please help me

Help
I need somebody
Help
Not just anybody
Help
You know I need someone
Help

I always thought this arrangement is great. But the solo here is one of the worst Blackmore ever recorded, wtf?

  3. m.... k....

I can't believe this song came to 1968, it sounds a lot like a future song. He was even earlier than stairway to heaven!

  4. B.... M....

    IMAGINE THIS:
John Lennon recording 'Help' as the ballad he intended, with
    Ritchie Blackmore on guitar,
Jon Lord on organ, Ringo on drums, and Jack Bruce on bass.
    Your thoughts here....................

    B.... M....

    Wow... that would be amazing

  5. T.... R....

    Beautiful.

  6. m.... k....

I hope Deep purple can cover more songs of Beatles.

  7. O.... ....

sem palavras, talvez o melhor cover que essa música ja teve

  8. J.... M....

Right along 5:10 it has a "Ravel's Bolero" hint to it.

  22. A.... C....

It is very interesting to perceive how the lyrics had gotten old fashioned by then

  23. Z.... T....

Hard to believe this was 1968.

  24. T.... D....

Even though it’s a cover, it still feels like a completely different song.

Quién podría dejar de gustar de Deep purple? Siguen por muchas generaciones y que nunca mueran. Todos los días un tema por lo menos, enriquece el alma

  28. H.... S....

    3:41 MAGNIFICENT!

  29. G.... F....

I love it. Had it on reel to reel in Nam in 1969. Still listen to it.

    G.... F....

I also like this song very much. My favorite Deep purple song.

  30. j.... ....

Nick Simper told me once, that, when John Lennon heard this version of the song for the first time, he was driving in a taxi! He heard the song, ordered the taxi driver to change direction to drive to the radio station, went in, asked them which group it was and if they could play the song again. They did of course... he really liked Deep Purple's interpretation of the song and the lyrics. A huge compliment for Nicky, Rod and the guys, showing it was the right decision to cover this song in their way...

    j.... ....

Lennon was brilliant musician, so I am not surprised about that

  31. Z.... F....

    beautiful cover

  32. R.... J....

    Excellent interpretation !!

  33. O.... S....

Must be an amazing coincidence that Help! is playing in my head the whole day today. Today, when I decided to start listening to the full Deep Purple discography for the first time. First album, and the song which is playing in my head the whole day is here. I had no idea they covered it

  34. K.... H....

I'm listening this song in reverse all the time with my uncle because it sounds very awesome.

    Try it ^^

  35. M.... H....

    Great Drummer Ian Paice

  36. K.... ....

The music is awesome and an overall good cover that stands on its own, but I just can't get into the singer. He sounds like he is barely trying, and maybe I'm just so used to Ian Gillan's power as well. Rod Evans is just a boring singer to me wit the exception of "Hush", and I find it hard to listen to most of the early Deep Purple stuff because his voice is bogging down the rest of the beautiful music.

  37. R.... V....

This song was amazing, I had to listen to it a few times, it's really chill, but spot on. I almost like this version better than the other, maybe because I've heard it thousands of times, but this had a certain syncopated beauty to it. I'm very glad I found it, u guys keep going on, like, I'm 60 and have never heard this, well I'm 32 and have heard every other dp song. It was a treat to unearth.

  38. 8.... R....

    Rock On

  39. .... ....

    Better then original!!

    .... ....

    my favorite cover song

  40. c.... ....

I hate how the vocals only go to the left ear while listening to it with headphones. Is there a fixed version?

    c.... ....

It happens with me all the time...

    c.... ....

indiana jones I’m a bit late with this, but it’s probably due to the mixing of the time this album was released (1968). Back then, stereo mixing was completely new and people didn’t really know how to utilize it yet.

    c.... ....

    @Ser I think so

  41. J.... G....

    "Tiefgründiger" gesungen als das Original...

  42. S.... ....

This instrumentation and vocal delivery fits the lyrics so much better. Rod Evans was one soulful mofo. The Beatles are great and all but they were much better songwriters than anything else and I find when great musicians cover them it often surpasses the original. Joe Cocker, Ritchie Havens, Deep Purple etc. I'll take a drawn out soulful version over an up tempo pop version any day.

  43. G.... A....

I think this is the way Lennon would've liked to have sung it. He has said that he wasn't happy with the fast pace it was recorded.

    G.... A....

George Alexander I never knew until now that John Lennon wanted Help to be a slower paced song. Too bad he never rereleased it as a solo artist.

    G.... A....

@abutts02 He intended to re-record the song. There's a demo from the 70s with John attempting a slower rendition.

    G.... A....

Capitol Records was concerned about the record sales , and felt
    the faster-paced would sell more,
and work better for the movie soundtrack.

  44. G.... G....

These guys that insult Deep Purple's masterly version and the others who said that they didn't like it, i have a notice for you: John Lennon liked this version, especially because this was a he originally intended to be.

Better than Beatles' version, even if The Beatles is my favourite band.

    G.... G....

I've never read a quote from Lennon about this version specifically (not saying it doesn't exist) but he definitely intended Help to be a slow reflective piece rather than what the Beatles ended up releasing.

    G.... G....

@Pincher Voice Clearly, Lennon wanted this song to be slower, a kind of ballad like "imagine".

  45. D.... S....

I wonder if the Beatles ever heard this version of "Help"?

    D.... S....

they might not like it though.

    D.... S....

    John Lennon likes it

    D.... S....

@Brandon Ariel Melluso Braun Has John Lennon heard this song?

  46. R.... D....

I'm both a fan of The Beatles and Deep Purple, Beatles are my favorite Rock Band and Deep Purple are my favorite Hard Rock Band, and this is a great cover of help.

    R.... D....

    yeah me too

  47. R.... D....

The Beatles the best band of the 60s and Deep Purple best band of the 70s.

    R.... D....

It's all very subjective, but they are all great.

    R.... D....

@Bestoink Dooley I agree with you queen sucks

    R.... D....

@meme king Yeah, I never understood how so many people liked Queen. It's mostly
girly boys and especially homosexuals that like Queen. Their lead singer,
Mercury, had an androgynous weird ass high homosexual voice like a woman-man. I thought they sucked.
    But whatever, music is subjective.

    R.... D....

@Bestoink Dooley yeah music is subjective ,
but I don't know why people so strange.

    R.... D....

    for me
1960-The Beatles and The Rolling Stones
    1970-Deep Purple and Pink floyd

    I think the greatest band
    1.The beatles
    2.The rolling stones
    3.Deep purple
    4.Led zeppelin
    5.pink floyd

    my favorite band
    1.The Beatles
    2.The Rolling Stones
    3.Deep purple
    4.Pink floyd
    5.The Doors

  48. D.... C....

organ makes that intro sound n never knew Purple did this til i watched Rick Wakeman interview Jon Lord

    D.... C....

That interview is how I got here too. I hadn't heard it before but if it was good enough for Rick Wakeman it's good enough for me. Thanks Jon Lord 👍

  49. N.... C....

This song makes so much more sense as a ballad.  The guy is feeling down and he's asking for help.

  50. D.... d....

    I m 666 to 667 swallow that rolling stones!

  51. M.... F....

    HISTORY.........

  52. L.... E....

the best cover of the song is Tina Turner's version, check out the studio version on her Private Dancer album and watch live performance of the her version. THE BEST

    L.... E....

I first heard her do it live in a smallish packed club in Montreal. Half the room was in tears before she hit the second verse.

  53. W.... D....

John Wrote This As A Slow Song, But Paul and George Martin said We Need A Fast Hit Song!

    W.... D....

Well, thanks to Dylan John's BPM went way down. Last thing us 14 year old spawn needed was a new slow-ass Beatles. Bad enough they spaced out anyway.

  54. T.... J....

    Love this

  55. S.... E....

excellent, most delightful to the ears

  56. M.... G....

I enjoyed the verses but not the "help, I need somebody, help, not just anybody..." part and the solos. The ending was great.

  57. l.... ....

Horrible cover. Don't do a cover if you don't even sound 1/4 as good.

    l.... ....

You do have a point about The Beatles version being generic and commercial.  Never thought about it that way.

    Thanks for your comment.

    l.... ....

    you are clearly tasteless.

    l.... ....

You sure?  I taste like liver, I'm told.

    Thanks for your comment.

    l.... ....

I love the Beatles sound but that whole Deep Purple album has a great sound in my opinion and so has this song.

    l.... ....

No it isn't you just had a horrible musical education

  58. G.... A....

A guy in my college dorm back in the late 70s had a Deep Purple album & that was when I first heard this. I prefer the Beatles' version but this is interesting in its own way.

  59. B.... ....

This is great but I must agree prefer the more energetic version by the Beatles.

    B.... ....

Originally, John Lennon sang it slow (think Revolution three years later), but was told by the others & George Martin that it would be a great single if it was sped up. Which he did. Later, many other artists have covered the song but the majority sang it slow as it is, after all, "a plea for help". It really doesn't work as a fast song - except for the Beatles. FYI, I was lucky enough to have lived in England for two years (mid-62 - mid 64), so I became a Beatle "fanatic" at age 15 and have learned as much as I can about many of their "back stories" behind the hits & history.

  60. g.... ....

I can't find a version of this quality anywhere. Why is the youtube version the best...?

    g.... ....

+gamhacked The best is my LP, but you're right. Here you can't find a better quality. The whole LP is fantastic here.
It's the new edition from the company.

  61. M.... G....

Congrats on your induction into the Hall of Fame! It's about time!

  62. S.... V....

loving this so much ,,, I remember listening to this when it first got out,,,,in 1968,,, and was very impresse, by this beautifull ''help'' by Deep Purple,,

    Beautiful ending.

  67. l.... w....

    Good but original better

    l.... w....

The point here is not to compare!!!

    l.... w....

No, this is better than the original, end of the history

    l.... w....

    Opinion is not fact.

  68. P.... M....

Listen to A Day in the Life, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Birthday- Geez- much more profound and musical than the dirge like music of Deep Purple.

  69. P.... M....

Wow, I turned 60 this year and never even knew this version existed. Quite good. The Beatle's version was written as a hit single- that is what everybody did in that era. Lennon's voice is better suited- more genuine and urgent. Music backing is quite good, especially the organ- by DP,  but it tends to drag on a bit too much, kind of trippier. Too much music detracts from the lyrics.

  70. d.... ....

I always loved this version of 'Help!'! In the early '70's, I found a bad European pressing of "Shades..." in the $1 bin. The only thing wrong about the album was the surface noise throughout. I played it to death!

  71. L.... ....

I fucking love that organ solo! XD
I love it when they get really crazy on the organ!

    L.... ....

    R.I.P. Jon Lord

    L.... ....

@Lodmot I agree, it comes with a real nice buzz in the body

  72. R.... ....

I am both a Beatles fan  and a Deep Purple fan, I do like this song better as a fast paced song.  On the other hand Deep Purple is by far and away higher caliber musicians then the Beatles could ever hope to be in terms of musical complexity.  IMO George is the only one that comes close.

    R.... ....

There's no doubt there was much more instrumentation on rock songs. The Beatles were singers, and instruments were largely accompaniment. There weren't too many ripping guitar solos, though when they wanted to, they could rip the joint with compact, tight power (Hey Bulldog, Paperback Writer etc). And you are probably a good guitarist because The Beatles songs may sound simple, but they utilised complex chords.

    R.... ....

    I'd say Paul.

    R.... ....

Completely agree. The Beatles' genius was in song writing rather than the technical proficiency of playing their music. Two generally very different things

    R.... ....

    Nice analysis

    R.... ....

Yes Deep Purple maybe the best band of all time if you mix all the parameters, technic, songwriting, sales, longevity...

  73. D.... C....

I enjoyed this song. Much more emotional than the original. I appreciate what someone said earlier about John Lennon wanting to record a slower more emotional version. I love the Beatles version even more, though. They were the best ever. Can't top them.

    D.... C....

Beatles best ever, you say? Can't top them? Ffs, you have got to be kidding me.

  74. C.... S....

imagine if gillan and glover had recorded this with mk 2, now if anyone dislikes this then you aint a rock man

    C.... S....

Rod Evans was a great singer, too! I think both are great Gillan and Evans!

    C.... S....

yeh he was, a double front act would have been tremendous, and twin bass's

  75. M.... G....

still sounds awesome !  DP made it their own

  76. D.... ....

    Puffy shirt!

    D.... ....

    and hair helmets!

  77. A.... W....

Terrible - turned off after 1min

    A.... W....

Open your Mind a bit, appreciate new things! At 4 min in it hits pretty good. Quite inventive & creative twist to the Rockin' Be-At-Les classic!! I think the beginning is pretty cool, psychedelic, slow driven madness. Why would a cover tune have to be just like the original? Deep Purple Rocks!!

    A.... W....

@Christopher Nagy Your probably right, I just like the boring original.

    A.... W....

I Love The Beatles, & the original is far from boring!

    A.... W....

Soooo, forward it to the 3:45 min mark? It's just a different version, if you don't like it, no biggie. Cheers!

    A.... W....

you missed the hell of an organ solo

  78. j.... g....

This is a great cover!! I love beatles and deep purple

    j.... g....

    yes forever

  79. S.... V....

a very good version ,, of help,,,

  80. a.... ....

That's a hilarious profile pic. Suprised no-one's thought of that before.

  82. M.... M....

  83. n.... ....

I like the beatles version just how it is. But maybe it wouldnt be bad if he did both versions.

  84. 1.... ....

    excelente cover!!!

  85. D.... S....

    Estranhamente legal.

  86. J.... W....

the angst this song speaks of....., it was relevant then as now

  87. c.... f....

I don't like this version :/ but is not bad

  88. m.... ....

Yep, pity he never did... Still I miss the high notes on the "please, please" which Beatles used - great cover still!

  89. G.... D....

    superb

  90. A.... ....

In one of my Deep Purple books, there's a statement from John Lennon saying that he wishes that he would have recorded a slower more emotional version of Help like Deep Purple did...I agree this version is AWESOME!!!

  91. j.... @....

This was a great idea of deep purple to get across a real big audiance in their early days with their own sound, I advice any group nowadays to do the same to get across with whatever sound they're making! Thanx for posting...
