Decemberists, The - The Engine Driver Lyrics
I'm an engine driver
On a long run, on a long run
Would I work beside her
She's a long one, such a long one
And if you don't love me let me go
I'm a country lineman
On a high line, on a high line
So will be my grandson
There are powerlines in our bloodlines
And if you don't love me let me go
And if you don't love me let me go
I am the heart that you call home
And I've written pages upon pages
Trying to rid you from my bones
My bones
My bones
I'm a money lender
I have fortunes upon fortunes
Take my hand for tender
I am tortured, ever tortured
And if you don't love me let me go
And if you don't love me let me go
And I am a writer, writer of fictions
I am the heart that you call home
And I've written pages upon pages
Trying to rid you from my bones
I am a writer, I am all that you have home
Home
And I've written pages upon pages
Trying to rid you from my bones
My bones
My bones
(And if you don't love me let me go)
And if you don't love me let me go
(And if you don't love me let me go)
And if you don't love me let me go

Reminds me of NMH. Good song!
i love how thats spelled...america is so fun i love it
I love this sound
Lots of emotional memories with this one. I showed it to an old friend of mine when we were drinking several years ago and it apparently touched a nerve with him. He had never heard the song but after hearing the chorus, he kept singing "if you don't love me, let me go" like he had known the song for years. He's been hurt lot in the past. Hope you're doing well even though we don't talk anymore.
I used to listen to this song as a kid when I was writing my first "book," solely because of the line about being a writer.
I want to "cut a rug" to this....😉
Reminds me of a long lost love but a much sweeter time in life. Having a bit of nostalgia there.
one of their most Morrissey/Marr-esque compositions
Timothy McPherrin huge smiths fan and it sounds nothing like them, more like fleetwood mac
I Wear A Fez Now eh I mean, it kinda reminds me of Stretch Out and Wait just a bit...but yeah I must've been stoned when I wrote that.
Seven army's of multi national origins with the basic army's from post coldest kept up where you put the trust worthy teens needing that and where you put the untrustworthy or unloyal as we protect corporate and multi state paid for endeavours.......im the world leader aliens be like your right but you can't help us
This song has shown Me what I have been attempting to explain to Myself and to Her for some time now ... by writing and writing in order to rid Her from My bones ... I have only managed to make Her an even greater part of Myself.
I liked it before it was cool
I'm the child of two handicappeds both attached to a politically minded chruchs and family my life should have been pretty easy..........pretty easy as habitual habits exist
Fuck thifty ice cream....it was there and this dog business I'd straight tell you what I meant....bot have to beg with myself about vengeance....do the Sept 11 attacks I already said don't kill anyone fake people dieding if you have too also so have pointed out it's about factoring as many people as possible.....
Favorite line if you don't love me why the fuck show the hell up.....you don't have to..........you just don't fucking have........it would help me just figure out what to do from there.....but torute......and power........madness...and laughness
Love this choon
I can literally feel the dust on my memories when I listen to this.
catapult to my past :)
Jfelix same
just got done doing a festival with Colin doing a solo set... this was played and man to photograph a legend like him was soooo special
I had heard 'Eli, The Barrow Boy', thought that was such a pretty song, so put on this album for background music while I was playing video games.
When this tune came on, it was so painfully beautiful, I had to pause my game, stop doing everything else, just to sit and listen in complete awe.
Just wow. This song is perfect. <3
Yeah, I've had the same reaction. It's _neutralizing_ . It's draining, but in a good sort of way.
I was introduced to the decemberists in my theater class and I fell in love hard to their style and all their music I've had the pleasure of listening to
this song always reminds me of when I was an English major.
If you like this song's melody (which essentially means "if you exist") you should check out "He Doesn't Know Why" by Fleet Foxes. Similarly beautiful repeating tune.
Tor Parsons Agreed!! He Doesn’t Know Why is sublimely beautiful beautiful, but sad to me.
Wow, thanks! I like that song but I didn't know the name of the band.
Still Listning...
fourchans upon fourchans
That's like.... eight chans!
the fucking memories come flooding back...
You used to be a train driver?
Maybe S K Y S C R A P E R was a county lineman or a novelist or a money lender. Or, more likely, they were just pleading someone at some point "If you don't love me, let me go." We were all in that situation at some point.
It's also written all over the stars.

you don't love me ... let me go
"… And then *it hovers above*
Reeling bodies failing to discover
*The thing they once knew as love*
Raising their voices to convince one another…"
No Room in Frame
Song by Death Cab for Cutie
I love this song and the meaning of it. It's kinda sad.
What's the meaning?
"If you don't love me, let me go."
They said it quite a few times; it's hard to miss.
Oh yah duh but there's more to it.
Kyle Askew basically shes leading him on and knows it but he stills love her so hes basically asking for her to break his heart finally herself
Ava Adams id love to bang you
I love this song. It reminds me of my past.

There Are Power Lines In Our Blood Lines.
Quite possibly the best song I have ever heard.
gr8 song
A killer song - hints of wichita lineman
you are fucken me . what because of a lyric line containing the word lineman, go stand in front of a mirror and start laughing. glen campbell would be yuckin it up to .
+chris park you're a moron if you can't see the parallels between this and 'lineman for the county'. do humanity a favour, do not produce progeny.
good one
This song plays with my heart, I'm on the edge while floating at the same time.
Brings me back to last september (-_ -) ... #itscomplicated
God.... I love it.
god these guys are good
You should do another one of these, just combine "The Engine Driver" with "On the Bus Mall", the 20 or so seconds of strumming at the end of Engine Driver leads right into Bus Mall. Sounds awesome in combination
i'm a highman
on the lowroad
as the time goes
i bought picaresque/picaresquities on vinyl :)
i bought picaresque/picaresquities on vinyl :)
Those are all my favorites, too. Along with The Island and Here I dreamt I Was An Architect. xD
LOVE LOVE LOVE Eli the BarrowBoy, AND Yankee Bayonet, and We Both Go Down Together.
i love the album picaresque. genius.
Summersong, Shankill Butchers, and Sons &Daughters are some of my favorite songs in general
Neh. I still love them, though. XD
yeah, "when the wear came" can definitely come off that way. there are a handful of songs i don't care for too much
agreed :)
Thanks :) The Decemberists are amazing.
i love ittttt :)
Yup~
The only one I don't really like is When the War Came, just because of all the screechy noise at the end 8| it's still pretty good though.
any decemberist song is pretty good. crane wife 1&2 is up there along with this one.
i agree completely :3
yea, me too! ^^
i use their music for almost all my vids, what i like best is that their songs tell stories! :D
welcome :3
thanx! they really are a good band. the singer is English, so it's REALLY hard to sing the songs. XD
u should look up some of their songs. my recommendation: The Chimbley Sweep, Eli the Barrow Boy, Yankee Bayonet, and We Both Go Down Together.
The singer is Oregonian, not English, but he definitively has a distinctive voice. Listen to Interpol, for instance, their vocalist sounds so British that never once would I believe their true hometown is New York.
As someone British he never sounded British to me but he didn't sound fully American either, I always assumed he was Canadian :D Some of his songs seem to have kinda Britishy themes cos they're folksy and a bit steampunky. Like the mariners tale and Eli the barrow boy both remind me of some kinda tragic victorian tale (although mariners tale is probably set earlier). I don't really know though it's just how I imagine it.
Tor Parsons Hes from Montana actually, just started out in Oregon
neat! this song is so peaceful & beautiful...it reminds me of the song in episode where Spongebob louses Gary.
