Decemberists, The - Row Jimmy Lyrics

Julie catch a rabbit by his hair
Come back step, like to walk on air
Get back home where you belong
and don't you run off no more

Don't hang your head let the two-time roll
Grass shack nailed to a pine wood floor
Ask the time? Baby I don't know
Come back later, we'll let it show

And I say row, Jimmy row
Gonna get there?
I don't know
Seems a common way to go
Get down, row, row, row
row, row

Here's my half a dollar if you dare
double twist when you hit the air
Look at Julie down below
the levee doin the do-pas-o

And I say row, Jimmy, row
Gonna get there?
I don't know
Seems a common way to go
Get down, row, row, row
row, row

Broken heart don't feel so bad
Ain't got half a what you thought you had
Rock your baby to and fro
Not too fast and not too slow

And I say row, Jimmy, row
Gonna get there?
I don't know
Seems a common way to go
Get down, row, row, row
row, row

That's the way it's been in town
ever since they tore the juke box down
Two-bit piece don't buy no more
not so much as it done before

And I say row, Jimmy, row
Gonna get there?
I don't know
Seems a common way to go
Get down, row, row, row
row, row

Decemberists, The Row Jimmy Comments
  1. M.... E....

Great cover IMO - actually one of the few bands that actually has the 4:4 timing correct, much harder to play than it sounds...

  2. T.... F....

Sounds like a good cover and tribute to me

  3. F.... G....

Julie catch a rabbit by his tail
Come back step, like to walk on air
Get back home where you belong
And don't you run off no more

Grass shack nailed to a pine wood floor
Ask the time? Baby I don't know
Come back later, gonna let it show

And I say row, Jimmy row
    Gonna get there?
    I don't know

Here's a half a dollar if you dare
Double twist when you land on air
    Look at Julie down below

So get down and row, row, row
    Row, row

That's the way it's been in town
Ever since they brought the jukebox down
Broken hearts don't buy no more
Not the way that it's done before

  4. 4.... ....

    Hair! Not tail.

  5. T.... D....

Was driving in the mountains the first time i heard this on the radio. Wow. I enjoyed the shit out of this.

  6. C.... T....

I like this...solid cover of one of the coolest GD tunes. In my humble opinion, I believe Jerry would approve and respect this!

  7. c.... ....

An excellent cover of one of the Dead's most rhythmically complex songs.

  8. K.... N....

More than a cover it is a tribute that shows just how much The Decemberists love Jerry Garcia, Donna Jean & Keith Godchaux, Robert Hunter and all the Grateful Dead and what fine players Colin and them are.

  9. J.... S....

great cover. for those who said it's shit...have you considered that you are retarded? actually retarded. the musical interplay is so cool and accurate tasteful tribute...great sound. he's not trying to sing like Jerry...and a few mistaken lyrics is supposed to upset a Deadhead??? just the fact that they covered this song, as mentioned...

    J.... S....

ok maybe I was drunk when I wrote that. It definitely IS a good cover

  10. g.... ....

    Juuuuuust Soooo Claaaaasic!

  11. F.... G....

    X L N T

  12. B.... B....

Dont get me wrong I love the decemberists and their lyrics but they should have put more thought into this dead cover

  13. B.... B....

The way hes singing it not his voice but...its just totally off for the song

  14. B.... B....

Maybe they didnt completely butcher it but

    B.... B....

+Beatle Bug decent, but it shows how difficult it is to replicate the dead's rhythmic, pseudo-reggae groove with this tune. to me it's what really makes it. less of a butcher, but more of a foil to how hard it is to cover the greatest band of all time.

  15. B.... B....

Trying to decide how I feel about this

    B.... B....

@Beatle Bug Then you've lost the right to "feel".....by definition...

  16. D.... C....

It's called a cover folks, a band takes a song they like and think their listeners might enjoy hearing them play and gives it a try.
And anyway, damn California hippies trying to play Memphis blues and bluegrass on acid messed up everything.

    D.... C....

+David Christian that's so wrong dude! they literally turned bluegrass on its ass. and if we're talking actual bluegrass- old and in the way (a jerry project) is the highest grossing bluegrass album of all time!

  17. L.... B....

butchered the chorus, but sounded good up until. Decent attempt though, you just can't replicate Jerry.

  18. J.... ....

There's no doubt that if Colin was 20 years older, he would have written some lyrics for the GD.

    A nice cover.

  19. C.... T....

@ danialdecker & randygarner44: Really? Jerry is more likely turning over in his grave for having such narrow minded fans such as yourselves. If the Dead had stayed in their own "lane" then we would not be able to appreciate the artistry that they shared with generations of music lovers and especially musicians, such as the Decemberists. They obviously pay homage to one of their influences. Maybe you should get out of your "lane" and see what else you can actually influence to the positive.

  20. J.... R....

I swear that im half of these views atleast

  21. r.... ....

This is so godawful I couldn't possibly say how I feel about it in less than 500 characters. Stay in your lane indie ass holes.

  22. K.... ....

One of my friends got murdered a few weeks ago, and they played this song at the funeral. Music heals everything.

  23. D.... ....

if you think you're clever you should check out not being patronizing and sarcastic.

  24. g.... ....

the dude from radiohead has a youtube account? and he uploaded this decemberist cover? sweet...

  25. j.... ....

    He butchers the lyrics....

  26. j.... ....

AWESOME - heard this on XM dead station when I had a rental car. Very thankful!

  27. c.... h....

Colin Meloy is a musical genius. Of all the Dead tunes that they could have covered they chose this one and perform it perfectly! Great job!

  28. d.... ....

It's on the EP that was released around the time of the release of The King Is Dead

  29. o.... ....

    Well done.

  30. B.... M....

    We need more of this!

  31. U.... ....

Love The Decemberists, Love The Dead! What an awesome cover, (how come I just found out they did this?)

  32. J.... C....

5:26 Colin Meloy giggling, is there any better sound? I can hear him smiling.

  33. C.... W....

This made my day. I got into the Decemberists first few albums so so hard in high school. MORE BANDS SHOULD COVER THE DEAD. Us Dead heads aren't snobs. We like these covers! The song itself, as well as the cover here, is great!

  34. m.... ....

@MtnBear07 Yeah, I've seen that a lot lately. They just appeal to so many people.

  35. P.... ....

can't say i'm digging it but then again I wasn't ever that much a fan of the slower Row Jimmys save a couple exceptions... always preferred the slightly rowdy early '73 versions

  36. H.... ....

@trampledbylambs Yes, I believe he would

  37. h.... ....

happily impressed! I'm a huge Dead fan, but I really dig this cover; well f'ing played Decembrists!

  38. M.... ....

Love it! I adore The Dead. I never expected to hear The Decemberists cover them, but this is fantastic!

  39. V.... B....

i'm so glad that the hipsters are allowed to listen to the dead now!

  40. T.... ....

@blackstar82863 Why don't you wash the smug off and have some respect for other people's taste in music? Thanks.

  41. s.... a....

Bros, it's gonna be on the new EP coming out Nov. 1. Studio version. For all of you wondering where to get a good quality version.

  42. m.... s....

" julie catch a rabbit by it's hare " is the lyric but i'm just another picky deadhead... sounds great kids

  43. F.... L....

Brilliant. you can rip it off hypem using garageband. that's what i had to do.

  44. K.... ....

@Elliottoes same here and i dont want to download from youtube either!

  45. E.... ....

I can't seem to get a hold of this piece at all, legally or otherwise. Anyone have any ideas? =/

  46. F.... ....

@MtnBear07 Wow. It is so rare to see a fan of a band like a new cover. You are one in a million, my friend :D

  47. C.... C....

    @blackstar82863 exactly.

  48. C.... C....

    exactly.

  49. S.... ....

oh man this is so sweet. done exceptionally well, awesome piano

  50. b.... ....

@MtnBear07 The Decemberists are DeadHeads also!

  51. p.... ....

this song makes me want to sway back and forth with an old pistol in my hand, whilst swinging that up in the air too.. anyone else?..

    p.... ....

    Well now, yes

  52. J.... F....

Between this phenomenal Dead cover and Built To Spill covering "Ripple" i hope all fans of good music can finally unite against modern day pop music. Here's to the future or Indie music, Jambands, and Americana.

  53. a.... ....

    Hipster crossover appeal ftw!

  54. M.... ....

As a Dead fan, I dig hearing newer bands cover the Dead Classics. Great song and great version.

  55. r.... ....

How can I get this cover on my ipod? Can't find it on itunes. Help!!!
