Decemberists, The - June Hymn Lyrics

Here's a hymn to welcome in the day
Heralding a summer's early sway
And all the bulbs all coming in,
To begin
The thrushes bleating battle with the wrens
Disrupts my reverie again

Pegging clothing on the line
Training jasmine how to vine
Up the arbor to your door,
And more
You're standing on the landing with the war
You shouldered all the night before

[Chorus:]
And once upon it
The yellow bonnets
Garland all the line
And you were waking
And day was breaking
A panoply of song
And summer comes to Springville Hill

A barony of ivy in the trees
Expanding out it's empire by degrees
And all the branches burst a' bloom
Into bloom
Heaven sent this cardinal, maroon
To decorate our living room

[Chorus:]
And once upon it
The yellow bonnets
Garland all the line
And you were waking
And day was breaking
A panoply of song
And summer comes to Springville Hill

And years from now
When this old light isn't ambling anymore
Will I bring myself to write
"I give my best to Springville Hill"

[Chorus:]
And once upon it
The yellow bonnets
Garland all the line
And you were waking
And day was breaking
A panoply of song
And summer comes to Springville Hill

Decemberists, The June Hymn Comments
  1. K.... &....

This song makes me think of the time I spent with my son in Lake Stevens, Washington. I Love you Son.

  2. K.... K....

    June is almost over

  3. S.... ....

    Happy June!

  4. C.... L....

This has pretty much been my life- getting married, staying married, raising children; and now wearing down.

  5. L.... F....

This is one of the last songs I showed my ex-wife. We were so sad and had just walked out of a frustrating marriage counseling session and she said, "this song is perfect for how I feel right now." Every time I hear it I think of her and that quiet car ride we had and all the different emotions we had flowing through us.

    L.... F....

Shit bro that hurted haha ill smoke to that

  6. R.... ....

I watch The Office US, and I discover Sons and Daughters.. I watch Parks and Recreation, and I discover The Crane Wife 3.. I watch how I met your mother and I discover Here I dreamt I was an architect. I fucking get it.. I have to love the Decemberists in this life.

  7. G.... H....

We did a dance to this song with my friend. memories!!!

  8. f.... ....

    That Harmoinca <3

  9. C.... S....

    but this is my childhood

  10. a.... ....

This song is my whole childhood. My dad would play the Decemberists almost every day when I was 7.

    a.... ....

my mom would sing the songs as lullabies, she would listen to them in the kitchen with me, and they've always been a part of my life since

  11. k.... ....

Love the fender rhodes in the birdge

  12. a.... s....

it's "garland all the lawn" , "will i bring myself to write" "here's a hymn", "thrushes bleating", "in the boom"

  13. I.... M....

I love this song. It reminds me of how lucky I am and everyone waking up and giving their best to their old life before journeying to their new life in adulthood. Well done Decemberists, Well Done.

  14. J.... H....

sounds sort of simon and garfunkel-ish

    J.... H....

very different to me. Simon and Garfunkel had extremely complex harmonies and structure with a sound like few others have been able to recreate, yet the Decemberists seem to have done something along the same lines, yet in a very different way. The most unique lyrics placed with the only possible melodies... beautiful. Other songs are playful or wry, great band.

  15. C.... L....

Get married. Stay married. Make babies. Be fully alive in the existential wonder of Creation.

    C.... L....

Infinite Ikari How many have you adopted?

    C.... L....

Do you have $30,000 to spend?

    C.... L....

that sounded like a good idea until i heard "The Rake's Song"

    C.... L....

What an ironic comment to be putting on a Decemberists song.

    C.... L....

El Rudo Del Pedo Now that I am financially stable and married, we’ll be adopting our first child in June. :)

  16. A.... W....

    Beautiful

  17. -.... ....

I love this song.. so weird my mom knows these dudes xD Small world.

  18. P.... ....

    Seeing them tomorrow!

  19. A.... R....

A beautiful song. Love it from beginning to end. Very good live to. Went to one of their concerts it was amazing.

    A.... R....

    Thank you 😀

  20. L.... C....

my mom, her best friend, and my aunt would always play this on the guitar and sing along at my cousin's country house during the summer before i went to high school. It always brings up nostalgia and happy memories of those times. <3

    L.... C....

-_- nostalgia doesn't have a time frame @Larry Davis  And also like i said this was the summer before high school and a lot has changed since then.. maybe 4 years doesn't seem like a lot to an older person but to me a lot has happened which is why i wrote this post. :)

    L.... C....

    @Louisa Crane
i remember when i saw jimi hendrix and otis redding at monterey pop festival in 67. what times those were, i wish i had my youth back instead of being a shriveled old man

    L.... C....

    Cmon larry

    L.... C....

+Nick Bryant aww....Larry....I could tell you all bout what it's like to be a millennial in 2017 and you'll start to appreciate how good you really had it. Revenge porn and all manners of nonsense.

    L.... C....

Hang on to those memories. Life just gets harder. You need those memories more and more.

  21. J.... R....

"Summer comes to springville hillll" - about girls / You were Way King- about modest mouse

    J.... R....

    It's "waking".

  22. I.... J....

Will I bring myself to ride (?) - Will I bring myself to write "I give... Hills".

    I.... J....

@Ivand Yan'kov Will I bring myself to write I give my best to Springville Hill.

  23. S.... T....

Beautiful Beautiful piece of music from start to finish.

  24. B.... G....

Beautiful song,  The Decemberists are a wonderful band

  25. K.... L....

+Sunnit Nayak  Do you feel better now that you've come out? Pillow biter. On a serious note. I remember them closing with this at the Schnitzer show. Perfect song to end the set.

  26. M.... l....

    That is not an insult.

  27. J.... S....

    Damnit,one month off....

  28. e.... g....

    Bella scoperta questo gruppo!!

  29. D.... T....

    same here in july :D

  30. d.... ....

Not sure what part was dissonant. It all harmonized right on, perhaps at best you can say there was a appoggiatura that resolved the chord. Check out Stravinksy's The Rite of Spring to get a taste of dissonance.

But yes, holy mother of hell, they're brilliant

  31. K.... D....

    my favorite of their songs.

  32. M.... B....

    Pretty sweet in May too!

  33. S.... C....

In about a month you're going to get more thumbs

  34. A.... D....

Thumbs up if Adam Savage sent you here. Never heard these folks before. I am so happy!

  35. A.... W....

In your description where youre unsure whether its "ride"... its "write" :)

  36. c.... ....

I remember the first time I heard the "Will I bring myself to ride?" verse... I had chills up to my soul with that perfect dissonant section. That was then I thought "Holy mother, they are better than good, they are genious!"

  37. a.... ....

how gorgeous can a song get? Answer...this gorgeous. Oh what a sublime little ditty...well it totally does it for me anyway.

  38. I.... ....

Thumbs up if you're listening to this in December!

  39. D.... ....

I think he says "a barony of ivy". As for the other word you are missing, I hear "Will I bring mysel to write" ... but I'm not sure (I'm French; it doesn't help)

    D.... ....

You are correct on both counts. It's "barony" and "write."

  40. J.... G....

November: June's Hymn of December....Yea that sounds about right

  41. A.... a....

    I love this song.

  42. z.... ....

The best feeling in the world is driving down the road on the last day of June, at 6 AM in the morning, with the sun rising to your side, while blasting June Hymn, and singing along as loud as you can. Little slice of heaven. :)

  43. A.... N....

Of course I find this song today, July 1st. :(

  44. T.... H....

I like this and Rox in the Box.

  45. F.... ....

too late...already crying.. Think Ima go download every decemberist song and go listen and take a walk in the woods. :)

  46. J.... P....

Thumbs up if you're listening to this song in June.

  47. r.... ....

    Happy birthday to you

  48. M.... ....

June 7th here! Happy birthday to you, fellow music lover!

  49. A.... N....

My birthday is the 1st of June, so in less than an hour, and this song couldn't be more perfect to kick off a beautiful summer for my birthday <3 much love to The Decemberists.

  50. J.... H....

    Goodbye May and hello June.

  51. t.... ....

This is going to sound really weird, but this song makes me think of Les Miserable and New Riders of the Purple Sage. At the same time.

Now that was a sentence I never thought I'd write.

  52. S.... ....

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO SUMMERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR... PEANUTS SMASH MY POTATO

  53. K.... T....

listen to "the hazards of love" as a whole song and not in parts, you will love it and i might even make you cry.

    K.... T....

Love that album. It's like an operetta without the acting.

  54. V.... A....

    hella chill o:

  55. F.... ....

    June can't come fast enough...

  56. L.... ....

I like this for the song itself.

  57. a.... ....

Thanks for uploading this wonderful song. Just a couple of suggestions for the lyrics:

    'Barony' of ivy

And I think (but I'm not sure) that the word in the lovely 'years from now... ' bridge is write rather than ride

  58. A.... R....

Is it legal to marry a song? Because I would marry this one... A million times.

  59. m.... ....

57 here and a veteran of shows from Detroit to Atlanta to Memphis...and you speak the truth and speak it well. I worry at their next record...these songs reflect in some cases a life time of angst and feeling...cannot conceive how they can conjure another dose of this magic for the next album...

  60. r.... ....

    Can't wait untill summer

  61. t.... ....

    panoply- my new favourite word

  62. T.... m....

it is truly a joyous thing to know that good music is still to be found.

  63. C.... F....

  66. n.... ....

    just beautiful..

  67. l.... ....

    a song for waking up

  68. S.... ....

This song is gonna make me cry.... So beautiful

  69. h.... ....

wow, and now I move on to listening to every song I can get my hands on from The Decemberist

    h.... ....

About to do the same lol

  70. A.... a....

This song makes me feel glad to be alive! ;P

  71. D.... M....

Please dont talk to me when i have my headphones on:)

  72. 1.... ....

    nice song

  73. l.... l....

    Love it :)

  74. V.... H....

@riseagan No one is a jerk haha. I argue about this kind of shit all the time with my friends, except they are much less informed then you guys. I feel like there's much more material on both sides for your argument than an argument whether the beatles suck or not. Of course I love the beatles, but my friends are musical noobs. But yeah. It's cool bro

  75. B.... S....

@vhalenhound my apologies. I did not intend to sound like a jerk. It was more intended to just be a debate.

  76. V.... H....

    @riseagan compromise for god sakes!

  77. B.... S....

@YesYouAreIgnorant Did you look up the song? or did you just decide to write in that irrelevant remark about McCartney? I believe that if you actually took the time to actually listen to KOL, you couldn't possibly say that they are shit. This coming from a person who thoroughly and completely hates the crap that is considered most popular (katy perry, that sexy and i know it guy etc...). I consider myself to be a critic of music as does it seem you do, so i'm telling you... give them a shot.

  78. Y.... ....

@riseagan Paul McCartney is also on his third marriage, that doesn't say much about his taste in music but does prove he is capable of having bad taste.

  79. E.... ....

What a great song, great album. Haven't been this moved by a new album since some of Dylan & N Young's stuff many years ago...

  80. B.... S....

@YesYouAreIgnorant And i'm sure that because they are "shit" and "write songs geared towards the MTV generation" is exactly why Paul McCartney, one of the most influential songwriters of all time, attends their concerts. Or do you know more about song writing than he does?

  81. B.... S....

@YesYouAreIgnorant Well theres your problem. the songs that are played on the radio are by far their worst songs. You have to look much deeper into their catalogue to find their musicianship. If you claim to love music the way it seems... you will give it a shot. Check out "cold desert live at O2 theatre" or any of their early albums. And kings of leon do not gear their music towards mtv generation as they remain to be the only band to refuse to let "glee" use their songs.

  82. Y.... ....

@riseagan No they really are that bad... and I listen to and enjoy a plethora of music. It just goes to show that you can make millions in the music industry as long as you write songs geared towards the current MTV generation - regardless of your talent level. Seriously - what teenager isn't interested in sex AND fire?! Too easy.

  83. S.... T....

    Love it!

  84. B.... S....

@YesYouAreIgnorant I sure hope you're not saying kings of leon are shit. To do so would be to profess complete musical misunderstanding and ignorance. That band is incredible. Perhaps you just don't know what to listen for.

  85. Y.... ....

@SuperJeremy25 not hard to outclass the king of leon. what a shit band they are.

  86. a.... ....

    beautiful

  87. h.... ....

I'm going to see them tonight and I can't wait for this song.

  88. s.... ....

I was at the Atlantic City show in July. This was the last song!

  89. K.... ....

This song reminds me of a nice car ride with the love of my life :) The night before we saw The Decemberists in concert :)

  90. A.... P....

@jlsrobinson January hymn didn't really do it for me, my favourites from the album are Down by the water, Rox in the box and June hymn

  91. A.... P....

    @ninjababyjesus There's a favourite button

  92. Z.... W....

So sad I'm going to miss their concert, I really want to hear this song live

  93. N.... B....

    God this song is beautiful

  94. G.... ....

    @natel68
This seems very anecdotal. You're being a bit too sentimental and dramatic. It's a wonderful song. That's just about it.

  95. J.... R....

January hymn and June hymn definatley hit the mark on this album :D

  96. D.... L....

This is hands down one of the prettiest songs ever written
