Decemberists, The - A Beginning Song Lyrics

Let's commence to coordinate our sights
And get them square to rights
(Get them square to rights)

Condescend to calm this riot in your mind
Find yourself in time
(Find yourself in time)

If I am waiting, should I be waiting?
If I am wanting, should I be wanting?
And all around me
(All around me)

Document the world inside his skin
The tenor of your shins
The timbre of your limbs

Now commence to kick each brick apart
To center on your heart
Starting with your heart (bright heart)

If I am waiting, should I be waiting?
If I am wanting, should I be wanting?
And all around me
(All around me)

It's it sunlight, it's it shadow
It's the quiet, it's the word
It's the beating heart It's the ocean it's the boys

It's you, my sweet love (my sweet love)
Oh, my love (oh my love)

And the light, bright light
And the light, bright light
Bright light, bright light

It's all around me
It's all around me
It's all around me

Decemberists, The A Beginning Song Comments
  1. J.... L....

I cry my eyes out everytime I hear this.

  2. M.... ....

Me, and the doubts, and the thrill, and the hard choices, and the love. The fantastic, the brittle pleasure I live... thanks existence to allow me this feeling.

  3. S.... S....

Nice:) And , hello Mr. Funk, nice to see you:)

  4. P.... F....

Fun fact: although Colin sings “The tenor of your Shins,” this song is actually by the Decemberists, not the Shins.

  5. G.... T....

This song has such a wonderful "Irish Folk Song" feel to it. That's what drew me to it!

  6. K.... A....

very underrated band. should get alot more views. love from egypt.

  7. R.... B....

  15. B.... M....

    Amazing

  16. B.... N....

This song is absolutely perfect. To me it's about the sacrifice, hope, pain, and love of being a parent. We sometime fails to see all the brightness around us when we are clouded by feelings of stress, competition, lack of sleep etc.. The pay off at the end of this song is brilliant. This band is a treasure.

  17. k.... v....

  25. T.... A....

anyone know what instument hes playing?

  26. H.... C....

What instrument is Colin Meloy playing in this? It has four strings, but I can't relate the finger placements he uses for G and D to an instrument I know.

  27. s.... ....

Saw them live in Leeds last week, amazing! But they didn't do this song!! Was gutted, this is my favourite decemberists song, true genius!!!

    Great Song!

  49. C.... N....

He turned a capacitor, kkkkkkkkkk !

  50. D.... W....

And that's how you end an album. Love this record so much. Even more than King is Dead, which I thought was nigh on perfect.

  51. C.... R....

I still don't get how this masterpiece has so few views

  52. R.... ....

    Um belo som! Parabéns!

  53. C.... G....

happy new year everyone. this is one of the most hopeful, beautiful songs ever. And one that we should commence to coordinating our sights towards a better year ahead.

Such a mellifluous voice! This is my favourite song from the album

  57. J.... R....

  58. m.... ....

This song makes me sad, and I have no idea why...

Fantastic album. Listen to it all the time. Can't wait for their next one.

  59. s.... h....

    s.... h....

anchovy overlord- hope you are in a better mood later tho :) :(

    s.... h....

you're a cool as hell 12 year old in my opinion

  60. E.... W....

I adore this album , they are one of few bands that give me those chills, the chills of what music feels like inside and out

    E.... W....

    Sierra Snider

    E.... W....

    Agreed.

  61. s.... ....

gives me goosebumps every time i hear this song. Amazing.

  62. P.... S....

    this is actually... intelligent 😻

  63. a.... ....

It's odd that the album got largely mediocre reviews. It has some of the Decemberists bests songs on it. This one and Lake Song are near the top of the list. The EP of outtakes from the album, Florasong, is also worth checking out - especially 'The Harrowed and the Haunted".

    a.... ....

Weezer's Pinkerton was met with the same kind of unusually negative reviews, and later turned out to be considered the band's most creative and subtly influential composition. I think that when a true gem is panned by critics, it is the mainstream separating itself from true listeners, fans, and people of discerning taste.

Besides, who gives a shit what the reviews say. I love the album. I love the band.

    a.... ....

I think people may have come to have certain expectations of the band, and thus were surprised by the direction this album took. However, over time, when people have enough time to distance themselves from those expectations, they'll come back around to seeing this album standing on its own merits.

    a.... ....

77 on metacritic is far from "largely mediocre reviews", the majority gave this album an 8 which is a fair score imo, but I know you're probably talking about that shit site called pitchfork.. they gave this album a "5.6" and Lady Gaga 6.9, it's absolutely madness

    a.... ....

davitt77 There most certainly is a divide (as someone who has been with them since Castaways and Cutouts). I genuinely disliked the last album, "The King is Dead" and it took a few listens to come around to this one. But the first song of this album addresses this problem pretty perfectly.

    a.... ....

Fans can be foolish and critics are notoriously wrong again and again. This album is pure Decemberists!. They always create something new with every album and this is the progression of Colin Maloy's musical vision.. A brilliant work from this generations brightest musical talent.

  64. b.... ....

    Family Guy brought me here....

  65. D.... F....

Their songwriting has really gone up even another level. This album is just completely on a different plane.

  66. B.... M....

i wish i could like a video more than once.

  67. A.... t....

great song to see in spring.

  68. L.... U....

Love it. These guy's music is different and beautiful!

  69. T.... M....

I love this song so much i made a cover of it on my channel (sorry for the plug, i'm a noob)

  70. N.... K....

I never should have sold my TG-0...

  71. f.... g....

Colin, please stop singing so beautifully. Humanity can't bear it. We haven't caught up with that voice, evolutionarily.

  72. A.... S....

you guys are still amazing. your still a great band with a great sound.

Your just not the decemberists anymore.

there's none of your old character and wit and humour. there's no sea shanties, no character pieces, no chances taken.

I miss the way you guys told stories, the way you build worlds for us to have little glimpses at.

I know you told us you had to change some, but not this much.

I'll still be here, still go to your concerts, like I said you guys are still fantastic to listen to. but I'll miss the old times.

    A.... S....

+Andrew Sheilds - not sure where you are coming from. Saw them in concert and the creativity, the words, the innovation were phenomenal. I'm 63 and rarely have seen this combination. this song especially.

    A.... S....

You say they've matured from a fun, niche genre to a well rounded ensemble with a depth and sound that's completely unique? I feel you there, man.

    A.... S....

you've just described what happens to every band that puts out albums for years...Colin is still an incredible song-writer and the sound is like no other band. I am offended by part of your comment, but in the best possible way. The older songs are great, and the evolution of their sound makes those older songs even greater.

  73. W.... C....

    The jam👍👍

(Shameless plug - we are brothers and would love if anyone would take some time to listen to our tunes/give us feedback. Cheers!!)

  74. J.... C....

I walked down the aisle to this song. Incredible. A little different intent for the music, but it was absolutely perfect. Thank you for this perfect song.

    J.... C....

I walked down the aisle in this song! It was beyond perfect!

    J.... C....

Did the doors open at 4:43?

    J.... C....

My cousin just played this at her wedding thursday! Had to shazam it! Lol Love it

  75. W.... J....

I think my index finger is making love to the repeat button

  76. G.... S....

The Decemberists are like the Shins, only without all that pesky talent, originality and good songwriting.

    G.... S....

+Greg S (SocalAdventures) where are the shins now? the decemberists keep putting out great album after great album

    G.... S....

I actually think it's the opposite...

    G.... S....

Both bands are great. Neither phenomenal. the Shins in my opinion have consistently better music.
Colin Meloy and company are talented to no limit. Hes also a better singer than Mercer. I enjoy much more Decemberists earlier albums. while all Shins are in frequent rotation.

  77. J.... S....

    New here; like these guys

  78. M.... ....

    So like REM, yes?

  79. J.... ....

    I miss Neutral Milk Hotel....

    J.... ....

@JACKnJESUS I saw them at Bonnaroo last year. Never thought I would get a chance to see them :D

    J.... ....

    @Lindsey M
    Most excellent!

  80. G.... F....

    Colin Great !!!

  81. C.... C....

Contrived accents? Pompous poseurs? Musical genius hipsters? Beats me, but---"....can't we all just sing along?"

  82. v.... ....

    I adore them.

  83. C.... R....

FOCUS ON, MAKE EYE CONTACT, LOVE DEEPLY ALL THE BEAUTIFUL THINGS STANDING/SITTING/PLAYING/SETTING/RISING/BLOWING IN THE WIND/ASKING YOU TO PLAY TRAINS -  INSTEAD OF CONTINUING TO LOOK PAST THEM AND INTO THE SPACE FROM WHICH YOU THINK SOMETHING BETTER AND BRIGHTER WILL BE COMING. You'll miss just about everything. So stop it. It's all around you.

  84. D.... G....

This track is up there with Crane Wife 1 & 2 for me. Absolutely love it.

  85. J.... T....

like the song, like the sound. I just wish the people who think they know the lyrics would not post them for the rest of us who do.

  86. M.... ....

Listening to the lead singer you'd think he was English.

  87. D.... D....

So beautiful, this song gives me goosebumps.

  88. s.... ....

    Simply beautiful! What a song!!

  89. d.... ....

This is invoking R.E.M.'s "Automatic For the People" for me. Incidentally, it's one of my favorite albums of the last 25 years.

    d.... ....

@dadamosky Make that the last, almost, 30 years. Geez! I feel old now.

    d.... ....

@dadamosky It was less than 23 years ago. No need to feel too old. I personally don't hear the similarity, but this is a great song - and a great album closer (something The Decemberists are particularly good at).

    d.... ....

+dadamosky When I first heard Make You Better, all I could think of was Automatic For The People. I don't find this one as obvious in its similarities, but after reading your comment I started listening with a different ear... and I started to hear the distorted cello / ebow guitar type sound, which brought to mind Sweetness Follows... and then I started to get a Monty Got a Raw Deal vibe in the guitars, and a Find the River sentiment in the lyrics... time to go back and revisit some of that mid-period R.E.M. I think :-)

  90. b.... ....

How can anyone be cynical or pessimistic when musicpoetry like this exists? So full of wonder in life. Thank you Decemberists for this gorgeous finale to your wonderful new album. <3

  91. J.... ....

Absolutely fantastic video here. Big props to the team behind it.

  92. P.... f....

If this band was inspired by R.E.M, it definitely shows in this song.

  93. T.... ....

This song has encapsulated my life.

    T.... ....

This song has encapsulated my life.
    Thats because your a simpleton!

    T.... ....

    @TheDimachaerus toy joo!

  94. L.... B....

Love the new album.  Can't wait to hear it live tonight.

  95. C.... V....

omg this is so hipster,, ,, i love it

  96. y.... c....

Just the maturity of this song lifts me. Fantastic

  97. r.... ....

Favourite song on their most epic album.
    All around me.

  98. S.... ....

And I am wanting. Should I be wanting.

  99. G.... P....

    this shit is so generic
