Dear Hunter, The - No God Lyrics

No god could teach me what my father did
No promise of heaven kept me warm when my mother tucked me in
No hope for salvation kept me from sin,
Just a small intuition not to do what all the bad ones did
And what comes next is a mystery to me
I guess I'll have to wait and see
'Cause everything I ever knew could just fall apart

I only know what I've been told
And I was told what others know
And others know what they were told
And they were told what others know

And I'll wait to tell what's wrong or right
And no fear of dying keeps me alive

And all we know is what we're told
And we were told what others know
And all they know is what they're told
And they were told what others know

And I'll wait to tell what's wrong or right
And no fear of dying keeps me alive

Dear Hunter, The No God Comments
  1. O.... L....

No God could teach me what my father did
No promise of heaven kept me warm when my mother tucked me in
No hope for salvation kept me from sin
Just a small intuition not to do what all the bad ones did

And what comes next is a mystery to me
I guess I'll have to wait and see
'Cause everything I ever knew could just fall apart

I only know what I've been told
And I was told what others know
And others know what they were told
And they were told what others know

No way to tell what's wrong or right
No fear of dying keeps me alive

And all we know is what we're told
And we were told what others know
And all they know is what they're told
And they were told what others knows

No way to tell what's wrong or right
No fear of dying keeps me alive

Some people believe that 4,199 religions are bullshit. Some believe that 4,200 are.

  3. D.... v....

God damn it, people. Seriously. LISTEN to the lyrics. This isn't about "god doesnt exist" or "fuck your religion"
It's about the one thing that religious people commonly mistake, is that we don't believe in god so we must do bad shit. No. Just fucking no. What keeps us from doing something wrong is our own judgement, not because someone or some book told us not to do it. And again, the lyrics "I only know what I've been told, and I was told what others know, and others know what they were told, and they were told what others know" is a commentary on how people are inherently inept to make their own fucking decisions/opinions/statements in life without following some book or some guy like sheep

  4. N.... W....

    Beautiful song. Great message to.

  5. S.... C....

    I LIKE PANCAKES!!!

    S.... C....

I'm a pancake bitch, but I take the cake.

  6. g.... ....

    good point

  7. K.... ....

Cut the bullshit people. This song rocks, if you agree with the lyrics or not. Personally I can relate to 99% of it. The only line I don't see myself relating to is "no hope for salvation kept me from sin", because the terms salvation and sin are all too... well, dishonest, in my opinion. I mean, I don't think there is such a thing as salvation, and as for sins, some people think masterbating is a sin, which is bananas.

  8. T.... ....

Religion isn't the problem. It's the way that some people would use it; mankind is the culpable attribute here. Belief itself is nothing more than a thought. We ourselves enact the violence. Invariably, we all just so happen to be born differently, and are engineered to perceive differently, and yet just about everyone will emit the same emotions. Sometimes aggressive actions causes us to act irrationally. So by that virtue, antireligious aggressors are at fault.

  9. T.... ....

"Challenging" someone's beliefs, as you like to call it, is exactly the mindset that incurs so much stupid arrogance in debates. It's not about tolerating someone just because they believe something you don't, but learning to accept people for who they are. If you have an issue with what certain people tell you, then just don't go for it. Maligning a person's beliefs because they don't line up with your own is the most self-degrading and ignorant means of going about it.

  10. g.... ....

    That's a serious accusation.

  11. g.... ....

Romans 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God

  12. D.... ....

    ... full of bullshit

  13. T.... c....

Literally every single song of the color spectrum is nearly entirely filled with comments on how much people love this band, Casey, seeing them live, saying how they're better live, etc.

But this one. Why? If you (as a person) don't like what you perceive this song to be about, don't listen. What may be worse, though, is that people who don't like what the others are commentating on, don't simply ignore them and downvote the comments.

    Instead we have this nonsense.

  14. d.... ....

I would guess that it's because the majority of internet users are from nations for which Christianity is the dominant religion. Therefore those who are non-religious tend to refute Christianity because they have the most familiarity with Christianity.

  15. t.... ....

Probably because Christians are the ones who come into the comments section of videos like this and start preaching.

  16. g.... ....

Also it is true that I do not help others as much as I should or could, and it is true that I sit behind my computer with a misguided God complex a lot of the time. But I do believe there is a way to tell what's wrong or right. And I do believe you might be under the influence of "Pride" as most of us are. Luckily for us God forgives us of self-righteousness amongst many other things.

  17. g.... ....

Christians do hold that we are all sinners, only saved by Grace through Faith in Christ. So if it seems like we're ever calling anyone "bad people", we've committed all the same sin if not worse and will continue to sin, except we've made a conscious decision to turn from it and put our faith in the Savior, Jesus Christ. Good luck, bro. :)

  18. A.... L....

For some reason, my comment on this video was removed. However, here is my response: contrary to your beliefs, not everyone needs to share your beliefs. Personally, I found strength within myself, my family, and my friends in place of faith for a deity. Does this make me a bad person? Quite the contrary. I spend my share of time helping others, do you? Or do you sit behind your computer with a misguided god complex? Respect others as you respect yourself, bro.

  19. A.... L....

Don't know if greyxwind is a troll, or very religious....

  20. c.... ....

woops I meant to say "god isn't the reason" in my first comment. little typo there

  21. g.... ....

sounds to me like he's saying he doesn't need God and all he needs is himself

  22. J.... M....

This is exactly how i feel. It's difficult to add to it. But i totally agree with what Casey is stating. This has been my mentality and when i heard the song i instantly connected. Amazing.

  23. c.... ....

I'm pretty sure this song isn't even implying that god doesn't exist. Casey's just saying god is the reason hes done the right things in life

  24. F.... H....

Im pretty sure he just clicked on the first result when he searched "no go" roflmao

  25. j.... ....

i am not religious either, and i accept what is finite and what is infiinte. and for me, the infinite and unknown is God. that's what i call it.
an interesting quote: "there are more planets in the universe than grains of sand on earth" think about that one! lol

  26. s.... ....

I love TDH first and foremost.
I see this song as it is, a catharsis of a man (Casey or another) who is grappling with how religion fits into this world and their life, not a direct dig at faith.
I should also say that I am a Christian, and I too sometimes struggle with why things are like they are, and with the learned behavior of so many out there who "know what they've been told, and were told what others know" etc. We aren't all fearful, conforming people robbing mystery from the earth.

  27. t.... ....

This is the first song I ever heard from The Dear Hunter. I'm hooked now.

  28. B.... R....

all these 4 people know, is what they're told.

  29. T.... R....

In response to all this talk about Jesus and love; The greatest peak of happiness and fulfillment in my life has come after discovering the facts of science and accepting that we simply do not know the origin of everything. Filling the void of questions with a God is tantamount to the famous "because I said so" answer. I sincerely hope you find your way out of religion and begin contributing your time to something that truly matters.

    T.... R....

Thomas Reid wow man. I bet you didn't imagine 5 years after you left this comment, some random stranger on the internet would stumble across it and completely connect with your statement. First honestly beautiful moment of my life came from renouncing my religion, going outside and looking at the stars and saying "whatever man. Idk." I wouldn't trade that moment of pure clarity for anything. Cheers

    T.... R....

All due respect, to say abandoning faith is the way to happiness and fulfillment is more than a little presumptuous, no? I personally despise the pretentious and self righteous nature of a lot of the religious people I know, but some religious people are out there humbly making positive strides to assist and improve other peoples’ lives in ways a lack of faith in a higher power and said higher power’s code might not normally allow them to. Sometimes religion works to better/self-actualize people and sometimes it doesn’t, but broad strokes do not an informed and detailed picture make.

  30. g.... ....

any kind of sex outside of marriage is sin yah bro so good luck I hope you find peace in our saviour <3

  31. S.... ....

So in other words you're trying to say if jesus were real even though he isn't that we'd be gay the second we seen him? I thought homosexuality is a sin?

  32. g.... ....

Thank you for your response and time! Repent and trust in the Saviour my friend and you will be free. His blood was shed for our sin, and with Him all things are possible. O, you of little faith!

  33. I.... ....

This is literally the best song ever.

  34. B.... ....

Ok, I'll start one for you.

  35. D.... J....

The fact that one band can have a million different sounds and that all of them can be insanely damn beautiful is just crazy. I love these guys.

  36. J.... E....

    This is one genius Man..

  37. T.... R....

this songs makes me so happy :) intelligent people making music.

  38. D.... B....

I'm surprised someone hasn't started a religion fight.

  39. A.... S....

My friend and I are listening to this on repeat while crying over something going on with our friend. There isn't a more perfect song for this out there.

  40. k.... ....

I am a massive TDH fan but this is the biggest heartbreak of the album, as is the entire "black" Lost but not all gone>everything

  41. C.... P....

This song resonates with my heart and reminds me who I am. It's also BEAUTIFUL sounding. Love all TDH's songs, but this one is definitely my favorite.

  45. K.... ....

I've been sitting here, trying to think of something profound to say. No matter how hard I try, it all seems petty when compared to this song.
