Man, I can't listen to this album without crying, smiling, laughing, and wanting to destroy everything, if only to make it better. I get the feeling that each song corresponds to the five fingers and the palm. The final track is obviously the palm, but which tracks do you guys think correspond to the individual fingers?

Blame Paradise has to be the middle finger. Beyond the Pale is probably the ring finger, the Right Wrong is the index, Witness Me is the little finger (that's the side we tend to show on social media), and that leaves Shake me Awake as the thumbs up to all of existence.

This masterpiece just goes to show that if you want to write a song in a particular genre, you would be advised to take as little inspiration from your genre as possible. I remember being outside the brewery next to the Cat's Cradle in Carrboro, speaking to you over a glass of whiskey, and watching tree sloth videos. And you're only evolving. I'm proud of you, keep pushing those musical boundaries.

Blame Paradise... I really like the intro, it looks like the style of "hokuto no ken" XD anyway, congratulations, I've known you recently but I've already fallen in love with your style, you have technique and charisma. Molto bravi! XD

I have just bought this from Bandcamp.com. A bargain for class music. It's just the latest of a series of terrific music coming from these guys, particularly the masterful Casey Crescenzo. I highly recommend their five act (so far) series of albums, starting with, er, Act 1. You can now get Acts 1 to 3 together on CD at long last.

Reminds me of his Receiving End of Sirens days. Perfect.

@Date Masamune They're characters from The Adventure Zone, a podcast where three brothers and their dad played D&D. Started as a goof, but got really intense. i wouldn't consider this as the progressive facet of TDH, the phase of the acts gave The Dear Hunter the label of a post progressive band, however, if you're into old school prog rock, like Soft Machine, National Health, Hatfield and the North (Canterbury Scene) and you expected that kind of stuff, then you're in the wrong place... THD can be more like alternative mixed with a little bit of prog rock and a theatrical style found in rock opera.

This really isn't TDH's normal style. Check out their studio albums too.

I studied drumset performance, emphasis in jazz. Toured in a death metal act, played reggae, grew up punk, and my drum teacher made $ thru drumming country muzak. This band supersedes all others of any variety. Nick Crescenzo your style points are ruthless, just tasty licks. Casey's conceptual continuity across albums is 2nd only to Maynard's. Sorry to hate, heh. TDH's composition has come a long way though. I couldn't help but smile on Beyond the Pale and throughout the rest of the record. I must pay for this!

btw, is Blame Paradise about the interpretations fans publish? ...reminds me of Blame Hoffman, or Life of Brian (Apparently You Haven't Seen). hah, just couldn't resist.

Much like Maynard's, the lessons or stories told seem to be in such a narrative that they should be counterinuitive to the listener's ear. Ironically, intentionally or not, making the listener think for themselves.

It's almost like the title track's content is synonymous with Vicarious' but conveyed in a meta way. Witness Me is somehow synchronous with Reflection in my mind. Maybe I should listen to more music ;)

it seems like every dear hunter entry takes me a while to love, and this is no different. Many times i hear their album, and find things a touch disjointed, but upon listening to it a few more times, it comes together.

so in liu of that, time to hit repeat.

I'm glad I'm not the only one willing to give interesting music a proper chance, even if it doesn't grab you right away.

I just got the EP by mail and I'm crying- "While every single one of you is wholly unique, this EP, and these people, represent the extended family of The Dear Hunter - all of you leaving a fingerprint on these songs, and this project."

To any fans of progressive rock spanning almost every other rock genre certainly. Alternative, experimental, orchestral, indie, punk, industrial, and folk elements all can be found in their beautiful and variant albums. They are also my favorite band and have been for a long while

S A I agree wholeheartedly. I am a huge fan of prog rock (Gabriel-era Genesis, Yes, King Crimson, Tool, Queen's 'A Night at the Opera', even modern prog like Animals as Leaders and Chon), but nothing can really compare to what Casey has created with The Dear Hunter. This EP in particular, it's impossible to categorize it within the scope of a musical genre. There's hints of metal, hard rock, soft acoustic, pop, ambient, dance/disco.. the list goes on and this is the case with all of their albums. I'm a musician and a music lover and so I can't deny that this is my favorite group. By a mile. Or several.

At this rate, they always will be.

Andy Breivik... Funny, I would never use the word bland to describe any of The Dear Hunter's songs. I personally like when they spice their albums up with fluctuations like it, and the style on Shake me Awake reminds me of Yellow's flavor... It's all very good, better than the otherwise mostly mainstream and formulaic...

I definitely like their wide array of styles. But I don't like pop music, and Shake me awake is a pop song.
