Dean Martin - Do You Believe This Town Lyrics

The woman next door has gone to the PTA
And stopped to see her best friend's husband on the way
The folks down the street have a different thing
So everyone is putting them down
Do you believe this town?

Deacon Jones preaches brotherly love every Sunday
And forecloses loans on widow's homes every Monday
But the smart guys say it's the only way
To keep the economy sound
Do you believe this town?

Do you believe they voted this town dry?
Well you won't believe it when I tell you why
The mayor and his cousin and the chief of police
have the bootlegging all nailed down
Do you believe this town?

Do you believe they burned a house down yesterday
You won't believe the reason that they gave
If the folks who lived there had a known their place
They could still be hanging around
Do you believe this town?

Do you believe this town?

    The recording just isn't great.
It sounds flat and lifeless and i am pretty sure it was one of those occasions where Dean just came in and laid down the vocal to the basic track then they built it from there.
The studio version arrangement doesn't help,,, the live arrangement chugs nicely with strong drums etc etc and etc...

    Mikey Condry

2packs4sure I actually think Dean has a much better vocal range on the record. Here he has no inflection up or down, on the record there is plenty of it

    Mikey Condry

2packs4sure I suppose I know what you mean regarding the arrangement, though

    2packs4sure

@Mikey Condry I agree to a point, the studio version is a more technically perfect and intimate performance from Dean,, but the live one has much more punch and verve and just sounds so alive, while the studio version sounds like Dean is singing along to a 70's gas station bootleg 8 track.....

"The song Do You Believe This Town was written by Charles Williams, Joe Nixon and was first recorded and released by Roy Clark in 1968." http://www.secondhandsongs.com/work/130294

looks like an old vcr recording but the video is awful  but a great song.

The song was most likely arranged by Les Brown who was musical director for Dean's show. His orchestra backed up Dean on all 9 sesaons of the show. Not sure who was the musical arranger for the Reprise recording.

I agree. It was recorded in mid-June of 69, I believe Dean started work on Airport about this time so he was busy with that going on. It was a filler song on the "I Take A Lot of Pride in What I Am album. That recording session did have a few very good recordings however.
I stand corrected it was never on his Greatest Hits Vol 2. album.

I think this song appeared on Dean's Greatest Hits Vol 2 album from 1969 but strangely never charted for him.

Thought I heard all of Dean's song but this oneis really good...Too bad about the video...Type in the search box "Let the good times in" and add Dean's name..Its a video he did and is confused by the Glen Cambell duo with Dean back in 67-68

  15. Chad Quick

God I wish they would release complete seasons of this show but I know that will never happen because of all the music clearances. Thanks so much for posting this :)

  16. 2packs4sure

Yea, the live version has a lot more punch.

  17. 60Cascade

Well I'm glad you decided to post it because I've always loved this song by Dino! I've only heard the studio version though. I've never seen this live performance before and you're right - it's great!
