Dean, Jimmy - I Won't Go Huntin' With You Jake Lyrics

Oh, it's springtime in the mountains
And I'm full of mountain dew
Can't even read my catalog
Like I used to do
I'm a-settin' in that little shed
That's right back of the house
Here comes old Jake with all the hounds
But he's gonna hear me shout

Oh, I won't go huntin' with you, Jake
But I'll go chasin' women
So put them hounds back in the pens
And quit your silly grinin'
Well, the moon is bright, and I'm half tight
My life is just beginin'
I won't go huntin' with you, Jake
But I'll go chasin' women

Let's go down to the meetin' house
And wait till they start home
Them gals that live on Possum Creek
We'll always leave alone
We'll run them down the corn rows
Them sassy little misses
We'll scare them pretty gals to death
We'll stop and throw 'em kisses

Oh, I won't go huntin' with you, Jake
But I'll go chasin' women
So put them hounds back in the pens
And quit your silly grinin'
Well, the moon is bright, and I'm half tight
My life is just beginin'
I won't go huntin' with you, Jake
But I'll go chasin' women

Now, go wash your face and comb your hair
'Cause it's durn near time to start
But let me tell you 'fore you go
There's one that's got my heart
Don't chase that gal with the yaller hair
And wears a dress of green
For that little gal belongs to me
I know she's past sixteen

Oh, I won't go huntin' with you, Jake
But I'll go chasin' women
So put them hounds back in the pens
And quit your silly grinin'
Well, the moon is bright, and I'm half tight
My life is just beginin'
I won't go huntin' with you, Jake
But I'll go chasin' women

Now I was headed for the general store
When a silly thing I seen
They make 'em in the city
It's called a magazine
I turned to page thirty-two
And look at what I found
Them gals wear clothes that we ain't seen
Beneath them gingham gowns

Oh, I won't go huntin' with you, Jake
But I'll go chasin' women
So put them hounds back in the pens
And quit your silly grinin'
Well, the moon is bright, and I'm half tight
My life is just beginin'
I won't go huntin' with you, Jake
But I'll go chasin' women

  1. W.... C....

This was the B side with Big Bad John on the A side. My older sister had the "45".

  2. c.... m....

The intro of the song is very similar to another song I just can’t remember the name

  3. M.... ....

Loved this song when I was a kid was one of the first 45 s I had.

  4. G.... J....

Glenn Johnson Still have this single and i am in the process of recording the song myself.Bought six string banjo a couple of years ago so.....

  5. R.... R....

An old Stuart Hamblen song. It's a favorite of third wave feminists, I'm sure.

  6. A.... N....

    * I utterly enjoy this song ********

  7. T.... 8....

I love this better than any other country music! I only love 50`s and 60`s country music and thats the only country music i like. The other country is SHIT! I listen to Rock ,heavy metal, death metal, synthesizer pop, old hip hop, old disco and old r&b!

  8. B.... S....

My father always said that when he'd take my son and I fishing, never realized it was a song. Wow the memories!

  9. C.... W....

This should have been the A side. Great fun tune.

  10. M.... O....

My Uncle Lloyd gave me this when I was still a Youngin. I still play it on my turntable.

  11. P.... C....

Y'all know what "that little shed that's right back of the house" is. Love the "Aaah-oooh!" hound sounds, too.

    P.... C....

    I know she's past 16 !

  12. P.... C....

Soooo country and cornpone cute! I sang along with the 45 rpm record before I was old enough to understand that last verse. Oh Jimmy Dean! This music's way better than your sausage - and the sausage is mighty good. Thanks you, @pvrocker 56. Play it again...

  13. A.... C....

Actually it's about Jake being a homosexual.

  14. C.... D....

Such a cute song.....always loved it!

  15. j.... s....

my late dad used to laugh at this song. does anyone know who played banjo on this song?

    j.... s....

Same as my dad this was his favorite song

  16. K.... Z....

Sang this to my daughters since they were little. Remember my Dad singing it

  17. P.... C....

I play the fiddle, and one of the first tunes I learned about 45 years ago was 'Chinese Breakdown'. I've just found out from someone at a music session that it's exactly the same tune as 'I won't go hunting . . .'

  18. S.... R....

Them gals from 'Possum Creek must have been awfully ugly.

  19. C.... G....

This song was on the flip side (45 rpm) of "Big John. Radios played "Big John", I played "I Won't Go Hunting".

    C.... G....

Your Right, This is the best side!

    C.... G....

i have a 45 that has this as the flip side to Little Black Book. written by Stuart Hamblin as i recolect

    C.... G....

My uncle had the single for Big Bad John. I played this side over and over. It was one of the first songs I memorized because it was so funny to my five year old senses. I never remembered where or how I became acquainted with what’s alway seemed like the ultimate hillbilly song when I lived in a house where we sang and played standards every day. Thank you for your remarkable remark about this song and the wonderful resurrection of my fond memory. I play bluegrass and America to this day. I’ll take this to the Roots of American Music Camp and resurrect it.

    C.... G....

    Me Too!

    C.... G....

    I like both sides equally.

  20. M.... B....

My father and I liked this song since I had all these songs on cassette tape

  21. C.... C....

    good song

  22. J.... N....

I'll go chasin' wimmin' with Jimmy Dean anytime.

  35. K.... M....

    Love it! Memories. :-)

  36. T.... ....

I heard about this song in a book called, "A Life in a Year", which is about the U.S. infantry in Vietnam. One guy named Jeff said his whole unit called him "Jake" because one of the other soldiers liked this song and said Jeff looked like the kind of guy he'd chase women with.

  37. f.... ....

no, thats where we used leave turds

  38. n.... ....

Have been playing this for my ex-girlfriend (still buddies) in New Orleans for years. She said, lets see if its on Youtube... me: "No way". Turns out I forgot parts of verses 2&3 and put the rest together. Still, not bad for 42 years ago. First 45 I ever bought, for Bid Bad John, of course...

  39. s.... ....

@rons2004 Happy you discovered side 2 of Big Bad John by accident. Nextdo: Play side 2 of all your 45s! You may discover more good songs :-)

  40. T.... ....

My grandpa sings this song CONSTANTLY. Just the chorus. I wasn't even sure if it was a real song.

    T.... ....

TallyRaps same here! My grandpa sings this song all the time and I thought it was something he'd made up haha. This song and "dang me" were my grandpa's favorites haha

  41. K.... K....

OMG I just went back in time about 55 years!

  42. B.... G....

@enduroman428 Is that where they keep the router and the modem and all those unsightly cables? :)

  43. C.... S....

Wonder how many under the age of 50 even know what the "little shed right back of the house" is!

  44. R.... K....

I like the Jimmy Dean, but check out the Stuart Hamblen original.

  45. M.... ....

Outstanding cover of the Stuart Hamblen hit and for my money, it's Jimmy Dean's absolute masterpiece. He is greatly missed.

  46. e.... ....

My friend got this on his jukebox and we we spin both "Big Bad John" and this just as much....

  47. R.... ....

Spring time in the Mountains and can't read his catalog like he used to? Some pages missing Jimmy?

  48. m.... ....

@JOEP123ful Thanks!!! Merry Christmas and hope you are listening to some meaningful tunes...Cyndy

  49. m.... ....

To sm9847, my brother had the same record that I so remember listening to! I believe that the flip side with Big bad John had the original lyrics at the end "One HELL of a man" as opposed to the change made. Am I right?!

  50. D.... ....

    mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm Jimmy Dean

  51. s.... ....

My aunt tells me I used to run around the house singing this as a young child. Thanks for sharing it!

  52. s.... ....

My aunt tells me I used to run around the house singing this as a young child. Thanks for sharing it!

  53. I.... ....

    Yaaaaaa Hooo!

  54. p.... ....

One of my very favorite Jimmy Dean recordings. What a fun song to sing!

  55. A.... C....

One of my all timefavorite songs. RIP Jimmy

  56. M.... ....

Sadly, we lost Jimmy Dean on the thirteenth of June at age 81. I remain inconsolable. And for my money, I Won't Go Huntin' With You Jake is still not only his masterpiece, but one of the most perfect records in all of country music.

  57. E.... M....

    I love being old

  58. g.... b....

    Great song !

  59. j.... ....

    IS!!!!! he aint dead yet!

  60. j.... ....

I have this song on a 33 /3 lp... its CS 9285 AND CL 2485 (google that, might help ya find the date).

  61. j.... ....

I am looking at a 33 1/3 LP (and getting the songs offline)....

FROM THIS LP I say the best are.....

    Big bad john
    PT 109
    Steel Men
    hunting with ya jake

"Dear Ivan" (not on this LP- but its damm good too)!

  62. M.... ....

For my money, this should have been the A-side of the single. It's far and away the best thing that Jimmy Dean ever did; right up there with "Makin' My Mind Up". A classic!

  63. e.... ....

My buddy's got this on his jukebox.
    Great song!

  64. E.... H....

Thanks from me too... I have spent the better part of 45 years singing this - word for word - to lots of friends and family... It never fails to get strange looks. Great to hear it again.
