Dead South, The - Down That Road Lyrics

Oh, well we run to the break of day
The old man groaned as we rolled away
Our women wept as we sped on by
We hung our heads low
As they raised their flags high

Then we grabbed our guns and we shot away
Let's kill our brothers on a Saturday
Blood spills out, and our wounds were deep
Old Jesse James, well, he won't even take a peep

So then we go on down that road
Breakin' your backs and breakin' your souls
Breakin' your backs and breakin' your souls
Mama said I'd die before I get old

The war is over and the graves were deep
The sun was down just like my brother Rim's keep
You burned my house and you raped my wife
I fall to my knees and I pray to the Lord
That I can kill that fucker tonight!

So then we go on down that road
Breakin' your backs and breakin' your souls
Breakin' your backs and breakin' your souls
Mama said I'd die before I get old

Oh, hey there dad, don't you know who I am?
No motherfucker, don't give a God damn!

So then we go on down that road
Breakin' your backs and breakin' your souls
Breakin' your backs and breakin' your souls
Mama said I'd die before I get old

Mama said I'd die before I get old
Mama said I'd die before I get old
Mama said I'd die before I get old
Mama said I'd die before I get old
Mama said I'd die before I get old

  33. T.... L....

Modern Country music is PBR. This music is a smokey Whiskey; made to be savored and always gone too quickly.

I'm trying to get my friend into that amazing show. I hadn't finished it yet, so don't tell me the ending haha. But I hope to watch it with them. Such a damn good show though. I think I was in season 4 or so.

Awesome! I absolutely love the dark edge to it and western and bluegrass flavors. It made me think of either a gritty western movie, or like a Cullen Bohannon type character from the TV show Hell on Wheels during their time in the Civil War and then afterwards in the Old West. I think one lyric does say that the 'war' ended. I think that might be the American Civil War. It also mentions flags earlier in the song, and then grabbing guns and firing away, which sounds like defenders trying to fight off an advancing column of troops--who would've had flags.

    L.... 7....

In their song "The Good Lord" they are absolutely talking about the Civil War, and so I always assumed this was the same. I saw them in Fort Collins, CO, and while they did not play until very late, and after two terrible opening bands, they delivered, and the show was amazing. I cannot understand why there are not more Dead South fans, or why pedestrian bands like Mumford and Sons rule the air waves.

  41. J.... E....

I literally can not stop listening to this band..

    J.... E....

I have to have a daily Dead South dose every day! I saw them in Fort Collins, Colorado, and they were amazing! I had to wait through two TERRIBLE opening bands first, which I just do not understand. These guys should be playing venues like Red Rocks! What is up with people who flock to generic, in musical bands like Milford and Sons, whose last (hit) was called something like, Guiding Light, and is an insult to the instruments they cannot play with any degree of mastery. How can anyone make such beautiful musical instruments sound so generic, pedestrian, basic, lacking any semblance of musical talent? I digress; The Dead South are some of the most amazing, talented, creative, and accomplished musicians making music today! Why do so many prefer to listen to prefabricated, mind numbing music? It frightens me for our future. Where are the fans of REAL MUSIC?

    J.... E....

2 years later, I still cant stop listening!

  42. M.... B....

Here I am up until 3 am because I have to keep listening. You guys are a special talent! Can't wait to see where the road takes you!

Son of a bitch, this is fine as they come.

  58. N.... ....

Impressive gritty vocals, and mandolin, cello, and banjo licks out of this world!!Oh and the amazing guitar strumming :)  Absolutely loving the blend of bluegrass, folk and rock elements. The South Is Dead, Long live the Dead South ! :)

    N.... ....

    Exactly my thinking

    N.... ....

South is not dead! It lives!

    N.... ....

    Well said.

    N.... ....

@Fred Neck These guys are from Canada. I would prefer to leave the old South as a sad memory and burn that flag you posted forever. I am sure the loved ones of Emit Till and the like would agree.

    N.... ....

@J. Dee Hobbs What is dead may never die. The South is filled with terrible history, but its going to evolve like bluegrass music is now - into something that carries over its ugly past while still making a new better way forward. People are coming into the south from all over the world and making the South new and better. Just like how the best folk singers seem to be Canadian like The Dead South, everything can and will change
