De Burgh, Chris - This Song For You Lyrics

Hello darling, this is the army,
I've just got the time to write,
Today we attack, there's no turning back,
The boys they're all ready for the fight.

Yes, I'm well but this place is like hell,
They call it Passchendaele,
In nineteen seventeen the war must be ending,
The General said this attack will not fail;

So I'm writing down this simple little melody
When you play it my love, think for me...
We'll be together in this song for you,
And it goes La la la ... sing it darling ... La la la...

They got old Bill and the Sergeant is still out there
Wounded in some shellhole,
They say this war will end all wars,
Oh God I really hope it will,

Oh how's old England, are they still singing
Those songs that we loved to sing,
When all this is over, we'll go sailing in Dover,
Catching fish like we used to with a string,

Oh I miss you, I miss you, I miss you,
If they get me my love you will know...
We'll always be together in this song for you...

And it goes La la la ... I have to go now...
Take care of yourself my love.

Just visited Passendale the other day. I couldn't get over how beautiful and peaceful the place is today. The line about "this war will end all wars" really struck a chord with me. Great song, one of my favourite Chris De Burgh tunes of all time.

The war topic has been relevant since the begining of civilisation. As a tiny Belgian village, called Passendale, not much more than a few streets, stands for the cruelty and futility of violence, so we all have to ask again and again, why mankind does not learn from its sins, but is waging wars far more brutish and horrible than World War One... Does the readyship for war not begin in everyone, long before he/she ist ready to take a gun and kill somebody? Ís it not the general attitude of us, that has to be changed? Food for thinking...

Why can't I find a studio version of this song :-( it's so good it's hard to believe they're isn't a studio version on YouTube. Can anyone help?

  13. s.... ....

Passchendaele was a really sad moment of our history. So many peoples died in those mud fields. It's probably the most unknow song of this album. But one of the most strongly sentimentale. Truly love this song.

@Krystaltipps I sure do remember good old record players! This is a beautiful version, just Chris on the piano. I do love his 'mature' voice but the version on Spanish Train and other Stories (what an album!) is lovely as well. Thanks for the comment.
